Erik installed two ceiling fans at my home. I first contacted him to troubleshoot why one was not working and decided to replace it. I then decided to replace a second one and he professionally rescheduled on a day that he would have adequate time to install both. I did decide to go with a fan that had a remote because it was more cost effective than running wires for a second switch. I am very pleased and would use his services again. Very knowledgeable and professional service.

Mike was on time and very professional. He installed three ceiling fans. These ceiling fans were a little out of the ordinary and heavy, one weighed 25lbs. He did a great job! I would most definitely hire him again to work in my home.

We had D3 give our kitchen a facelift by painting the cabinets, replacing the ceiling drywall, installing a new door and painting the walls. Their price, communication, quality of work and cleanliness were exemplary. Ive hired quite a few pros off thumbtack and they were the first to deliver results on a professional level. Will be hiring them again in the future.

Luke and Steve came out today and did some miscellaneous lighting installs and plumbing work. I can’t speak more highly of them and their quality and professionalism. The job was originally just 2 chandelier installs, but escalated to 3 ceiling fans, 3 vanity lights, 2 flush mount lights, 1 toilet install, and a vanity with faucet install. All was done within a day and at a reasonable price. I will be hiring them to come back out for some additional plumbing work! So thankful for a job well done!!

We had James remove wallpaper on our bathroom (no easy feat, trust me!), patch the walls, paint walls and ceiling. He replaced the faucet, pop up drain, light fixture along with other fixtures. I'd hire him again in a heartbeat. He's a man of character.

We hired Tri-Capital to complete multiple projects for us on our new home. They replaced the roof on deck, replaced the fascia on house, installed a drop ceiling in basement, and also converted a storage room into a half bath within the basement. I was extremely impressed with the quality of work, communication, and timeliness that Tri-Capital showed. They completed all work ahead of schedule and stayed within budget. I would highly recommend them for any work that you may need done on your home. Thanks again to the Tri-Capital Crew. Go Cowboys!!

Bill helped me repair a broken cast iron drain line at a rental property. It required cutting into the ceiling to get to the drain line and replacing a considerabile amount of pipe. The work required quick action and Bill really helped me out by getting it done in 1 day of work. He did a great job communicating with my tenants and cleaning up before he left. Price was fair, communication was great, and the job got done. 10/10 would recommend.

I needed help putting up a new wall and ceiling in my living room. Lon came highly recommended, and did not disappoint. He helped to keep cost down by allowing me to help instead of getting someone else. He stuck to his schedule and everything came out perfect. He even helped us put in an outlet for no extra cost! Great guy who does great work!

We were in a bind and James & CJ came in and were great. We had an unfinished job that we needed to be finished fast. Our previous contractor abandoned the job. Still had lots of work to be done: basement/wet bar area needed wet bar area built & finished (including a tricky water pump situation), electrical issues, drop ceiling to finish, some drywall work, installation of doors and wood trim, painting walls, flooring installed and custom bar built. We only had about a week and they came in and worked very long hours to get it done, especially CJ. For our limited budget, they were excellent. VERY pleased!

I bought an old house with cracked plaster- the ceiling was just about falling in. Brice was incredibly professional. He took down the old plaster and installed a brand new ceiling with recessed lighting and beautiful crown molding. He patched the cracks in my plaster walls and repainted everything. His attention to detail demonstrates his professionalism. I explained exactly what I wanted and he easily surpassed my expectations. It's hard to find a contractor that will communicate as clearly and work as efficiently as Brice. The job site was always spotless when he left at the end of the workday, and so it was clear that he respected me and my family. He is highly recommended.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
