I had two basement windows I needed replaced. James came out, gave me his bid, and was hired. His knowledge and professionalism won me over. The windows were a pain to get out. Not once did he show frustration, only a smile. My new windows are in and look amazing. I've already hired him for some more remodeling. A very honest, meticulous, hard worker. Thank you James and D.

Dave replaced our worn out linoleum with a waterproof "wood" vinyl floor. Did a high quality job, including choosing quality underlayment, which I knew nothing about. The flooring looks professionally installed and Dave worked around our schedule. Dave also installed a new basement door, helping choose a door that met our specifications and he made improvements to the structure of the wall that it was mounted in so that the door was in more soundly than the one it replaced. This job, too, was done on our schedule and with professional quality. We have Dave lined up for a couple other projects as well due to his knowledge base, quality work, and reasonable rates!

Tom installed new exterior window shutters for me. He did the job well, communicated well about when he would be there to do the job as weather was a factor, and charged a very reasonable fee. I will plan to use Tom again in the future.

Shane installed a patio door on the rear of my home. There was a window in the spot, but no patio door, so framing needed to be completed and the exterior needed to be finished. Weather and bad luck threw some curveballs in the project, but nothing that could have been avoided. My only reason for the good vs excellent review is the the job was not completely finished. The exterior finishing and drywall finishing was left up to me. I am capable, so it's not a big deal, but I assumed this would have been taken care of. Overall, Shane was nice, professional, clean, and responsive.

Mr. Glenn Willis did a superb job of installing 10 window blinds for me including a large sliding glass door. The quality of his work was very high and he is a very friendly, engaging, and professional person; he was polite, witty, and a hard worker. He is patient, allowed me to watch while he worked so I could learn how to do the installation myself in the future, and his fee was VERY reasonable! He responded right away to my email request and he was able to come to my home within just a few days. I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs blinds installed or any other home improvement project.

After talking with a couple of contractors, I hired Brian to repair the roof over my family room and the ceiling damaged due to roof leakage. I also needed repairs to my balcony and the door into the family room. All of the repairs needed were due to water and wind damage that had accumulated over years. I also chose to have skylights installed since the roof and ceiling were both being repaired. Brian was nothing short of fantastic! He is a perfectionist and his work exceeded even my own very high standards! He is also the most honest contractor I have ever hired. I say this because he stuck to the estimates he quoted even though there was greater damage than anticipated hiding under the balcony carpeting and roof shingles. Brian also worked late into the evening many nights and worked under tarps when it was raining. He also completed some additional small repairs that I had been putting off and charged a very reasonable rate for those repairs. I cannot say enough positive things about Brian. I feel so lucky to have found him and will turn to him first for any future home repairs--construction or otherwise.

Jason did an outstanding job on the work on our finished basement! He was completely professional and very responsive to our needs. From the beginning of laying out the project in a clear and concise manner, helping us know a cost (and sticking to it) to looking at and recommending materials, to always being accessible and present - we really enjoyed the process and highly recommend his services!

When We first met Ryan with Heritage he was very patient and listened to what we were wanting in new windows. His product and installation were awesome, they did an excellent job from start to finish. When they left the job complete we did not even know they had been in our home. Very Trustworthy people. Family owned and operated was important, BUY LOCAL, We will recommend Heritage Windows to all of our friends and neighbors.

Our new door installation is perfect. Marty and Mike are highly skilled, experienced carpenters. I've installed doors myself so I know it is not easy. I needed people for this job who had more skill than me because it is an older, out of square, brick house. Heritage suggested where to buy the door resulting in additional savings. The whole project was a very good value. I recommend Heritage Windows and Doors with no reservations.

We had Meyer Windows& Door install a sliding door a few years ago and they did an awesome job. I could not be more happy with the outcome. The door had built-in blinds and it was exactly what we needed because of the afternoon sunlight. Also last year had them come out to install all new windows. What a difference new windows make in electric bills and no more drafts. Very happy customer!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
