Joe and his guys did a great job they showed up when they said they were going to show up and even early sometimes. They were very thorough their attention to detail was great I can't say enough about how happy I am with the experience and with thumbtack for providing quality contractors. I would recommend Joe and his crew without hesitation. Did I mention they work very quickly, but not so quickly that the prep work isn't also done properly. I had them paint all the interior doors in a four bedroom apartment building the exterior trim, garage doors, 4 exterior decks waterproofed painted the garage doors, all basement walls were waterproofed (and it worked joe it's raining as I type and all is dry) one thing led to another with Joe because a lot needed done and I just kept hiring him to do more. Thanks a lot to you and your crew... Until next time :)

Greg was awesome! We left a swatch from our garage door, he match the color, painted downspouts and house trim. He was a great communicator in letting us know when he was scheduled to stop by to prep the house and paint. Then followed up the very next day when complete to ensure everything worked out. I would recommend Greg for any painting.

Shane installed a patio door on the rear of my home. There was a window in the spot, but no patio door, so framing needed to be completed and the exterior needed to be finished. Weather and bad luck threw some curveballs in the project, but nothing that could have been avoided. My only reason for the good vs excellent review is the the job was not completely finished. The exterior finishing and drywall finishing was left up to me. I am capable, so it's not a big deal, but I assumed this would have been taken care of. Overall, Shane was nice, professional, clean, and responsive.

He responded to my inquiry for work right away. We set up a meeting to show the work needed and to view the house and yard work needed to prepare a quote. He emailed me the quote that night. The cost was very reasonable and we agreed to do the work two days later. He finished the work well within the time frame he said it would take. The remodel and landscaping looked beautiful. He had amazing attention to detail. Cleaned up after themselves and was very professional. I was very happy with his work and would recommend his company for all your remodeling needs. He remodeled two of our bathrooms, our kitchen, screened in our back porch, and installed rockscaping. They fixed drywall, installed new fans and lights, mirrors, tiled a new shower, installed glass shower doors, tiled and painted our kitchen, and painted the entire house, he also installed hardwood and linoleum flooring. Everything looks very elegant and high end. Definitely would use this company again.

Dan recently replaced all interior doors and exterior. A lot of issues came up with the walls and was able to accomplish all tasks in no time. He placed custom trim and crown molding which turned out amazing. We had a very complex and difficult transionital strip from tile to hardwood which he was able to blend very nicely. We were so pleased with his work we allowed him to place a 12' x 24' composite deck with exterior lighting in the posts. Outstanding work and very knowledgable and professional. Highly recommend for any type of project not only for the pricing but the type of work you get out of it all!! If you would like to see pictures I am willing to provide!

They were great to work with. Responded quickly. Flexible with the work that needed to be done. We had the chimney crown rebuilt and some tuck-point repair done. Also cleared out main drain and connected kitchen sink to plumbing stack and installed a clean out.

I've used Demi Remodeling a few times. At our first house they built a deck and completely remodeled a kitchen for us, opening up the kitchen to the living room, and the house to the yard. It was a total transformation that made the house feel more inviting. It was so nice, I didn't want to leave our first house and I wish I still had that kitchen and the big door to the backyard! The people who bought our first house mentioned the beautiful kitchen and new layout as the reason they picked our house. At our new house, Demi Remodeling has done our roof, rebuilt a wall that had been water damaged, fix some foundation concerns, and remodeled the 30 year old bathroom into an oasis complete with heated tile floors and a tile surround. We've recommended them to friends and family, and everyone who has used them has been just as thrilled as we are. My mom had them take her new house down to the studs and rebuild almost every room. She is thrilled with her new kitchen, bigger bathroom, finished basement, new siding, and hardwood floors throughout. (They made her year when they went out of their way to match her new flooring to the original flooring in her kitchen.) We are planning on using Demi Remodeling several more times, as my wishlist keeps getting longer: a deck and garage outside, an extra bathroom and remodeled kitchen inside, just to name a few! They are professional, friendly, and fair in their pricing. I absolutely recommend them for any job, inside or out.

Hopewell Home Improvement did a fantastic job of refurbishing my exterior panel door that was completely coming apart at the seams--the home was built in 1890 and this was a special door. Travis was professional, courteous, careful about not tracking any dirt into the house, and he completed the job in a timely manner for a very fair price. He also did minor plumbing and electric repairs with which I am completely satisfied. I will definitely hire him for future projects and recommend him to others.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
