Kitchen on Wheels Catering catered my wedding this October of 100 people. They came early and served appetizers, provided a bartender, and served the main course. Dominick met with me beforehand and was enthusiastic to work with my preferences for local, organic food. He worked with me to design a seasonal, organic menu at an incredibly reasonable rate. The food was phenomenal, and the guests raved about it all night. The service was exceptional as well. I would recommend Kitchen on Wheels to anyone, and would call them in a heartbeat for any catering needs I have in the future! Thanks so much, Dominick, for your great, thoughtful work.

I had a phenomenal experience with A Catered Affair for my wedding reception. It was very easy to coordinate with the staff beforehand, so I didn't need to tend to anything on the wedding day. They had everything set up at the hall exactly as needed and it looked very professional. The staff did an amazing job of tending to the buffet and cleaning, and all with a smile. The food was delicious, and I got so many compliments about the great food and great service. I would recommend A Catered Affair for any event - I am incredibly pleased with my decision to have them cater my wedding!

Jessica Catered a 50th Wedding Anniversary Party for my parents. The event started out small but kept growing. I really didn't know what to expect hiring someone to cook for us. We tend to "cater" our own events. My hopes were to have a memorable experience for my parents and guests. Jessica contacted me immediately after my inquiry which was wonderful since I was a little evasive on my list. Once we talked everything fell into place. The food was wonderful and presented beautifully. The guest enjoyed every plate. The event was eating and mingling. We didn't go for a sit down dinner. Jessica made sure the food was easy to eat while standing or sitting. The courses kept coming and our guest anticipated each one. The night went just as I had hoped in my mind. The best part Jessica understood my vision. Many guest asked for her name and number! The ultimate compliment!! The event was a huge success thanks to our fabulous Chef, Jessie Judd!! I would definitely do it all again and hope to use Jessie in the future. She has a wonderful personality. My entire family felt like we knew her forever! I highly recommend her services.

Chef Maria's team delivered outstanding service and a wonderful meal to our 200 wedding guests! They were absolute pros, pitching in even on things they had not specifically been asked to do, just to make the whole event team work better. Recommend with all my heart, an extremely positive experience, from the excellent pre-event meetings with Maria, to the final experience on site. THANKS TO YOU MARIA, AND THE WHOLE NIBBLES TEAM!

The Nook Events & Catering was the perfect fit for our wedding. Sabrina was so personable and made us feel incredibly comfortable with the process. We had just lost our catering choice a month before the wedding and then we discovered The Nook. The time that Sabrina took out of her day to make us feel like we were going to be taken care of was unseen in the market. She worked with our budget and helped us find exactly what we needed. She had great advice for the day of and how things should be don. She was very sensitive to the theme of our wedding and how things would be set up and made the whole process seamless. We used the full service and it was above and beyond what any other catering people would have done. They didn't let us lift a finger and we were able to truly enjoy along with our family the once in a lifetime day. She made us feel like friends not just clients, we were taken care of for sure on one of the most important days of our lives. Thank you so much Sabrina & the Nook ! You were all fantastic! We will for sure use you in the future, I am Nook hooked !

Mikes Somkehouse BBQ catered our wedding gathering (post wedding) and it was more than amazing costumer service. They arrived on time, with everything we requested for, and the catering was exactly what we ask for. The BBQ was awesome, along with the sides. Plenty of food for everyone. For our next large gathering I would definitely consider this service.

Charlie is awesome! Having only a day's notice, Charlie was able to work with me on creating a food menu (with certain dietary restrictions) while also providing me with a bar tender/ server, as well as plates & glassware. The day prior to my fundraiser, my caterer called and cancelled and I was stuck trying to find a new caterer that could provide a specialized food menu (no shellfish, pork, or dairy appetizers) for 30 guests as well as both a server to help set up/ close down the event and a bartender to serve drinks. In addition, I also required glassware and plate rentals. I contacted more than 20 caterers in the Cincinnati/ Kentucky area trying to find someone who could fulfill all of my requirements. Charlie responded quickly and worked with me (well past business hours) to create a personalized menu, find servers, and have everything organized. The next day, Charlie personally went to the event and did the set up to make sure that everything would run smoothly before handing off the event to one of his capable servers. Throughout the fundraiser, people came up to me and complimented the food and were pleased with the service. At the end of the night, I spoke with the host (who was unaware of any catering issues) and he thanked me for arranging the food/ service and praised Charlie & his server for the delicious food as well as leaving his kitchen clean and organized before leaving. Not only did Charlie work around a very tight schedule, but he kept me at ease throughout that very stressful day, letting me know what everything was in good hands and updating me whenever I called. Finding a caterer in the Cincinnati area that can help throw an elegant event with tasty food and great service is do-able; finding a caterer who can provide these same great services with only a day's notice is rare. I highly recommend calling Charlie for future catering needs- you will not be sorry.

Smoker EZ BBQ catered my wedding on May 16th 2015. We had about 150 people attending the wedding, and through multiple emails / phone calls with Craig, we got an estimate on how much food we would need. The day of the wedding they showed up on time, prompt, with enough people to serve the food and keep the line moving. The food was delicious as it has always been with Smoker EZ. Our guests commented over and over how they loved the food, and how much better it was than the usual wedding food. I would highly recommend Smoker EZ BBQ for any event / party / situation that required food.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
