Introduction
I believe in empowering students based on their unique abilities and goals. Although each student is different, many teachers use a one-size-fits-all approach. I believe in tailoring and varying the lesson materials to create a two-way dynamic which empowers and challenges students. I love the variety and excitement of teaching music of all styles to students of all ages, and the satisfaction of having a student "get it."

I took piano lessons from Jeff for several years. I was learning to arrange and play popular songs, working from melody lines and chords. Jeff helped to guide my understanding of how to enhance chords and arrange different types of music--standards from the 20's, 30's, 40's, and 50's, blues, and vintage rock. I made rapid progress because Jeff always encouraged me to arrange the songs on my own, making suggestions to improve and enhance what I was doing. Since Jeff moved to Cleveland, I have been playing on my own--enjoying songs that Jeff and I worked on together and developing new songs. Jeff is a very skilled musician. His jazz performances are amazing, and he is comfortable working with many different kinds of music. I feel very fortunate that I was able to work with him. I recommend Jeff with enthusiasm!

Jeff is a very personable teacher who always expressed interest in my business and my work-life. He was quick to recommend pieces to learn which were appropriate for my level of musicianship. Jeff took pleasure in my improving level of piano skill. He was always agreeable to letting me film + record his technique. I looked forward to my weekly lessons.

Having taken jazz piano lessons with Jeff for 2 years, I can assure you that he is an excellent pianist and teacher. Jeff does a wonderful job of creating an atmosphere of comfort and creativity, giving me the encouragement and knowledge to explore and expand upon my own ideas. Jeff also led me to various performance opportunities and programs in and around the city, which helped me hone my skills and learn to play with a group. Above all, Jeff is passionate about his work, and this certainly shines through in his teaching.

During the time I spent as a student of Jeff, I learned a lot about the structure, style, and beauty behind a wide variety of jazz pieces. Having previously had only teachers who taught classical piano, I found Jeff's instruction immensely helpful in my transition into jazz. His own amazing piano abilities were not at all intimidating; rather, they inspired me to reach such a high level and gave me confidence in my own soloing ability. He is a fun, very friendly, and all around cool guy, and a pleasure to take lessons from. I would recommend any student of any skill level to seek out Jeff Long if they want an excellent jazz teacher!

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

    I am a lifelong musician who started playing music at the age of 6. It seemed only natural that I would study music in college. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, I worked as a professional musician in the Cincinnati area. Teaching allows me to share my talents, experience, and outlook to help people realize their goals—it is a most rewarding line of work!
