Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a bed bug treatment last?

Bed bug extermination can last forever as long as the treatment killed all the bed bugs (and their eggs) and if new bed bugs are not transported into the location. Factors that can affect the outcome are how severe the infestation is and whether all bed bug sources were properly identified and treated. When working with a pest control professional, the EPA recommends you check and call references; ask if they offer both chemical and non-chemical treatment options, if they recommend both encasements and interceptors, and if they offer two or more service visits and follow-up. Bed bugs are tiny (adults are roughly the size of an apple seed) and can hide anywhere a credit card can slide into. They squeeze into cracks in walls, behind electrical outlet sockets, in bedding, and in other dark places. Learn how to prepare your home for a bed bug treatment for the best outcomes. Michigan State University shares some examples of possible reasons that a bed bug extermination is not 100 percent effective:

  • Not all sources (aka hiding places) of the bed bugs were identified during initial inspection.
  • Not all sources of bed bugs were treated.
  • The insecticides used were not effective or, in the case of heat treatment, there was insufficient contact time.
  • Infested items such as bedding or other materials were reintroduced into a cleaned area.

How do you check for bed bugs?

If you are concerned you have a bed bug infestation, look for physical signs of their presence. Bed bugs love to hide in small, dark spaces and typically come out to feed (generally on human blood) after dark — although they will come out in daylight if hungry enough. The Environmental Protection Agency states that indications of an infestation can include seeing shed exoskeletons of bed bugs, rusty spots on your bedding (which are either bug droppings or bloodstains), live bed bugs, bed bug egg casings, a sweet and musty odor (if the infestation is severe), and evidence of bites on your skin.

To spot bed bugs, look in and along mattress seams and bedding, in curtain and furniture folds, inside cracks or crevices in the walls, behind picture frames and mirrors, under loose wallpaper seams, on recently used luggage or backpacks, inside electronics, and inside clothing or cluttered areas such as closets. If you see signs of bed bugs, be careful not to disturb them too much as you don’t want them scattering to other parts of your house.

How do you get bed bugs and how do you get rid of them?

The increase in bed bug infestations in the U.S. is a result of increased travel, lack of knowledge about preventing infestations, increased resistance of bed bugs to pesticides, and ineffective pest control practices, explains the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It’s easy to mistake bed bugs for carpet beetles or similar-looking bugs, so infestations are often not noticed when they first occur. Prevention tips include keeping areas free of clutter, regularly washing sheets and mattress covers in hot water (and don’t forget to wash the laundry bag, too), and vacuuming regularly and safely disposing of the sealed vacuum bag. Not everyone has reactions to bed bug bites, which also may be mistaken for the bites of other pests such as mosquitoes, so timely bed bug extermination depends on identification of bed bug activity. If you notice physical signs of an infestation, contact a bed bug extermination professional as soon as possible to learn about chemical and non-chemical (such as heat) treatment options. An integrated pest management plan may incorporate one or more methods.

What are the signs of having bed bugs?

There are several signs that can indicate you have bed bugs. The first is actually seeing the little pests skittering through your house. They tend to feed at night (generally where their hosts — people or sometimes animals — are sleeping), but can come out in the day if they’re hungry enough. Adult bed bugs are rusty red in color, as thin as a credit card and the size of an apple seed. Sometimes they can be mistaken for carpet beetles or small cockroaches, so if you’re confused you can use this helpful guide by the EPA for identification. Although they are harder to see, spotting the eggs themselves is a surefire sign. Another common symptom of having bed bugs is finding the exoskeletons of the nymphs near your bedding and other bed bug-friendly locations. The more exoskeletons you find, the larger the infestation likely is, because as they mate and proliferate more and more juveniles are born and cycle through moltings. Rust-colored spots — which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains are blood-filled fecal dropping that the bugs excrete on bedding and furniture — are another sign that bed bugs are living in your home. In addition, a sweet, musty odor can be an indicator of bed bugs.

Can you see a bed bug?

Bed bugs are visible to the naked eye, but depending on where they are in their life cycle they can be hard to see. Adult bed bugs are the easiest to spot. According to the EPA, they are roughly the size of an apple seed and the height of a credit card. Adults are flat and oval-shaped, have six legs, and are rusty red in color. Bed bug larvae, also referred to as nymphs, are white-yellow or translucent in color and are much harder to spot due to their small size. The nymphs go through five stages of life, shedding an exoskeleton at each stage. Throughout these stages the nymphs grow in size from approximately 1.5 millimeters to approximately 4.5 millimeters. Bed bug eggs can be the most challenging to see as they are roughly 1 millimeter — about the size of a pinhead — and are white or clear. Bed bugs tend to be more active at night, as this is when they feed.

How much does it cost to kill bed bugs?

The cost of bed bug extermination depends primarily on how widespread the pest infestation is and how many rooms need to be treated. Other factors that can affect bed bug extermination costs are the amount of clutter in the location, additional furniture that needs to be treated, and construction of the home. Pest management professionals often have rates for room treatments, which can vary based on these factors. As an example, a pest management company treating a 10-by-15-foot room with light infestation might charge clients about $250, while the same size room with a heavy infestation and large amounts of clutter might cost the clients $300-$400. Clutter and heavier bed bug populations mean more product and longer labor time for the workers. Rates will vary from company to company, and from region to region, but the national average bed bug extermination cost is $320-$400. Bed bug heat treatments are an alternative way to exterminate these pests. Heat treatments are typically charged per square foot and tend to cost more than chemical or non-chemical spray solutions. Although effective, they are not usually recommended for occupied spaces, as the extreme temperatures can damage televisions, window dressings and other home furnishings.

If you are experiencing bed bugs right now you know what a horrible feeling it is ..after reviewing several websites and lots of information, talking to other providers on the latest most effective methods for removing bedbugs and reading a ton of reviews, we chose M2 Bed Bugs. Mike has invested in using canine detection which is the most advanced method available. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable on bedbugs but many other types of "pests" as well. I highly and strongly recommend using Mike and his K-9 bed bug inspections. He will give you all your options based on what they find and at a very economical rate. Believe me, we did our homework and we hired the best with Mike. He immediately stayed after the inspection and was able to do the first treatment right away. We will need another one but we have already seen the results. We couldn't be happier with M2 Bed Bugs and give them an A+ ..outstanding service, Mike and thank-you for all the time you spent answering our questions and making us feel comfortable with the treatment .

Art was very informative and professional. I had discovered bed bugs 2 days before I was supposed to move into a house I purchased. I needed their service on a very short notice and Art made sure to make it happen on time. It has been a couple of weeks since I have had the heat treatment and have had no signs of the bed bugs, he also provides a 60 day guarantee where most places I looked only hold a 30 day guarantee. I would absolutely recommend this company.

Very pricey. But worth it if you don’t have to worry about bed bugs again after the first day of the treatment. I haven’t seen any at least. I’m approaching the designated time when a dog needs to come in to make sure they are gone. Hopefully I can update my review.

I was pretty sure I had a bed bug problem. I searched the internet and used Thumbtack to find a local exterminator. I was contacted by Eddie Jenkins jr. of Jenkins Pest Solutions. Eddie seemed real knowledgeable about my pest problem and set up an appointment to inspect my home. He came out, checked my home and informed me, to my dismay that I had a bed bug problem. Eddie assured me that I was not alone in the battle to get rid of these pest. We set up a two treatment extermination process. I had to wash and dry everything in my home, empty all closets and drawers, and clear a path for all baseboards. About one week later, Eddie came out and flipped and sprayed everything, cracks and crevices included. I had to leave my home for a few hours while he treated. Upon returning home I could tell that Eddie had done a thorough job as, everything was flipped, moved and sprayed. Eddie informed me where he found live bugs and told me that I may see live bugs as the spray does its job. However, after the initial treatment I never saw a live bug or got bitten. Eddie came back about 2-3 weeks later for the second treatment. He completed the same process, flipping and spraying everything. He also informed me that he didn't find any live ones at that time. It has been about a month since my nightmare started and I am happy to report that I remain bed bug free. Thank You Jenkins Pest Solutions! Thanks Eddie, your knowledge and professionalism helped ease the stress and anxiety I was feeling about these blood suckers. I would recommend you/your company to anyone seeking help for a pest problem.

Art and his team were great. They provided a solid level of information about the Bed Bugs and what we were dealing with. They also were able to schedule quickly and were right on time with all the appointments made. We had our heat treatment done yesterday, so we're hoping the little devils are gone for good. They did great work.

Troy is the absolute best! I was so glad that I found him! He was exactly what I was looking for when I needed assistance to inspect/treat for bed bugs. I had been emotionally distraught thinking there were bugs in my house. Troy educated me and put me at ease. He is not your typical bug treatment professional. His modern knowledge about his trade really impressed me and this makes him a cut above the rest. I've worked with other companies and they are mostly old fashioned and not up to date with their methods. Other companies quoted me thousands of dollars higher than Troy's treatment. Other companies were quoting me for services I didn't need but I didn't know that until I spoke to Troy. I can't recommend his service's enough. If you are considering having someone come to your home to inspect/treat for bugs, seriously, call Troy and tell him about your situation. He really cares about people and it shows with his work. I will DEFINITELY be keeping his number. Look at his website and give him a call! After you speak to him for a minute or two, I'm sure you will feel at ease and ready to hire him! Thanks so much Troy!

If you are look for a pest evaluation for your home, you don't need to look any further. Charles might as well have a PhD in pests and how to deal with them, he is so knowledgeable. He was friendly, professional and efficient. After informing me that I did not have a bed bug infestation and that he didn't recommend any professional extermination services, he sat with me for 10 minutes and explained lots of different potential sources of my issue and how to treat it myself. He was honest and upfront, and I am really grateful for that in a stressful situation. Don't waste your money on super expensive services that might rip you off. Just hire Charles.

I purposely waited a week to post a review. One cannot be certain immediately if pests have been eradicated. I am happy to report that Integrity has performed admirably. We appear to be bug free. What I liked most about Art (the owner) is the education he provides. He spends time teaching about the wonderful world of bedbugs, then walks you through, step by step, what to do to rid yourself of them and, more importantly, how to keep them from re-infesting. It's like Bedbugs 101. Art tells you when he will arrive, what he will do and what you need to do, then does exactly as he has said. A word of caution: when Art tells you to give your home time to cool off, take that to heart. We waited the recommended two hours after Art's people left and thought we would drown in our own sweat. We ended up spending the night in a hotel with great air conditioning. I highly recommend that course of action for anyone having Integrity treat their home. I also highly recommend Art and Integrity Bed Bug Solutions. We got lucky when we found him.

No one's a fan of bed bugs, and I'll be honest when I say that this was my very first time dealing with them. After getting a quote from a company who was pretty light on details for our questions but very heavy on price, I reached out on Thumbtack and Art/Integrity responded. From the moment that communication started I had questions answered, a home walkthrough scheduled, and a beginning strategy in place. During the walkthrough Art was incredibly thorough in explaining what will be done, what might not need to be done due to the nature of the infestation, and what we would have to do to make everything ready. The price was very reasonable for the scope of work, and while no one is a fan of writing large checks, I didn't have a problem writing this one based on the level of engagement Art had with us. We had some questions a few days after the walkthrough while we were doing prep work, and I received answers extremely quickly. I honestly hope i never need his services again, but if I do I wouldn't hesitate to pick up the phone and call Integrity.
