My journey into comedy didn't start in a club; it started in the jump seat of a fire engine. After 30 years in the fire service, I’d seen the kind of "tough stuff" that stays with you. Like many first responders, I was navigating the weight of the job when a counselor pointed something out that changed my life.
He noticed that during our sessions, despite the heavy topics, I spent most of the time making him laugh just by how I told a story. He saw that I felt my best when I was helping others see a different point of view—whether it was as a youth leader or a "Girl Dad" trying to make sense of the world for my daughters.
The counselor gave me a challenge: "Try stand-up. Talk about what you know. Help people realize that life is crazy, but we should do it anyway."
I realized then that I had a choice. I could let the trauma haunt me through PTSD, or I could use those same hyper-vigilant skills for good. I chose to turn the "first responder's eye" into a tool for joy. I found that if I could make a room full of people laugh at the absurdity of life, I was helping them heal right along with me.
I knew I couldn't go this far alone. Others saw the mission and joined the adventure. Together, in 2017, we formed the MPSC Entertainment Network. Since then, we’ve been using our "Incident Command" approach to bring laughter and connection to stages nationwide.
