Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Contact professional furniture movers near you to get estimates for your move.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Very nice and respectful. I previously had a bad experience with a different mover but GRIND was awesome! My furniture was well packed and wrapped by them. I would recommend them to everyone who needs a great mover!

Awesome movers! They were on time and very professional. I lived on the second floor so I was really nervous about having all of my furniture and appliances moved. Everything arrived safe and sound! I will definitely be using them again

Hired Woodby Movers (WM) to pick up furniture from Macy's to put in my basement - mainly because the Macy's movers wouldn't and couldn't. WM showed up 15 minutes early, were extremely professional and got everything connected. Would hire these guys in a heartbeat!

I needed assistance to move my office, including several large furniture pieces. An Extra Body Movers contacted me the night before the move to confirm the time, showed up timely, and went above and beyond the projected scope of the move to ensure everything was placed exactly where it needed to be, and in the best position to showcase the new office. This company combines the benefits of a large moving company, with the personal service of a small company, and all without hidden costs. I would definitely recommend this company.

My experience, so far, has been the upfront logistics of coordinating an out-of-state move of packing, loading, moving, and unloading household furniture. This process, including their timely responsiveness to emails and the 20% down payment, has been great. The actual work will begin next week but, so far, so good.

All I can say is wow! I was very nervous to hire movers because I thought they were young and would milk the clock but they sure proved me wrong. We needed someone last minute for helping to move a large house and they were available and the best price around. They didn’t stop working the whole time, almost 9 hours on a very hot July day with some pretty heavy furniture. I was very very impressed. They don’t nickel and dime you like other companies. They were friendly and professional and did great work. They were a little late but nothing terrible and their hard work was SO greatly appreciated, I don’t know how we would have made the move without them! Thank you!!!!! 10 star rating if possible!

I had a double bathroom vanity and matching counter top that had been taking up a lot of space in the downstairs living room. Both items of large and heavy furniture needed to be taken upstairs ready for installation in the bathroom. 'Leave It All To Us' offered to help us even though this was a short task - they were available to do the task within two days. We discussed a great price and the guys showed up on time and had everything moved in less than half an hour. Fantastic service, great value. Exactly what we needed. We would gladly recommend them and would certainly have them in mind for any future moves. Thank you !!

Gary and his team did a great job. This was a "break up move" and emotions were high. There wasn't much furniture, but we chose to use professional movers, rather than friends and family, to keep any drama in check. When I explained this to Gary, he suggested I give him a list and let them take it from there. I took his advice and the day unfolded without a hitch! The team was on time, professional and took great care with my belongings (even shrink-wrapping my leather sofa to prevent damage in a tight entry). His rates were quoted up front and that's what I paid. I am highly satisfied and would absolutely recommend them.

Words cannot describe how satisfied I am with this company. Gary and his team of boys were miracle workers. In 2 hours they managed to get ll my furniture out of the house and moved into the appropriate rooms, They even went through the extra effort to arrange my furniture with care and curtisey. I have dealt with professional movers in the past and not even Two Men in a truck was as understanding and determined s these boys. Even more so every single one of the four young men that moved us were well mannered, highly respectable, understanding and just over all refreshing. Only two things came up that urked me bit. But neither were the fault of Gary or the boys. Every thing was fair and just on their end. 1.) there was a miscommunication about if I had hired them for that day or not. This was quickly resolved by making a phone call to Gary who was more then kind enough to make an exception to come out same day. 2.) We had broken budget. It was inevitable, We had so much and Gary had even told me that it would go over if they continued fter the first hour and by then they already had most of everything down. I asked him to continue. We ended up going 180 over my budget. However I was able to pay him. I'm not even upset. They were worth EVERY PENNY and MORE. They even managed to get my entertainment center down in (mostly) one piece. (it was falling apart anyway) Thank you Gary and boys. I'll most definitely ask for you ll again. And I definitely recommend that if Anyone wants a Job done there is no one better then H.E.L.P.
