Quick arrival, excellent work. They explained what we need to know/do in the future and even fixed our running toilet, which wasn't part of what we called for. No extra charges beyond the quote. I definitely found my regular plumber for our new house!

Tim did a great job with the time constraints I had as I needed interior painting done quickly to get our home on the market. The paint job turned out being larger than we thought but he was able to get everything done in a timely manner. He was very easy to work with.

Above and beyond.... We sent them some pictures of the carpet to repair, and he advised us the repair may not be spotless due to the age and wear pattern, and we should consider replacement of the hallway. Well, we asked him to try anyway, and the results were far better then expected. Friendly, courteous, and extremely honest.

Willis and his crew have refinished hardwood floors in several apartments for us. He's very easy to work with: laid back, but starts and finishes the job on-time. He takes the initiative to make sure each job turns out right, for example suggesting a darker stain when the floors are in less than ideal condition. The finished product always looks great at a good price. Not opening the windows to let out fumes on one job, resulting in complaints from tenants, is the only issue we ever had with the service.

Initially, I hired Jerry to take care of two different tasks. One was to replace two copper pipes that were not installed properly and the 2nd was to replace the water valve stems behind a washer dryer. While it wasn't initially discussed, I also introduced him to the outdoor faucet that had burst from the winter. Jerry and his colleague, Otis were extremely friendly and has a positive attitude towards the work. They educated me on what work was going to be performed and got straight to it. Given the number of tasks, they did an excellent job at each one and the prices was fair for the service they provided. I will definitely call Jerry again for additional home improvement projects that are beyond my skill level to handle.

We have used Greg for various jobs on our rental home. I can ask him to do the little things, as well as larger projects. He has repaired gutters, repaired a fence latch, replaced kitchen flooring, fixed our heater, weather sealed some doors, put in new screen/storm doors, fixed a ceiling fan, installed a new mailbox, and various other upkeep jobs. He charges very reasonable rates, and is helpful at coming up with a cost-effective solution if that is what you desire. He is easy to reach via text message and email which is helpful and eliminates "phone tag" issues. Because of the variable nature of the jobs he does, sometimes he is not able to do the work on the originally scheduled day because a previous job may run long. Usually, this isn't a problem, and if the job is urgent, he always comes through.

Very thankful for the work HTC Roofing did on replacing our siding and the stone upgrade on the garage section of our home. Our insurance covered the siding replacement due to hail damage (original siding was aluminum), HTC was extremely helpful in getting this processed. They worked closely with us and our insurance company which made for efficient and timely approval. The crew was hard-working and professional! We love the new look of our home too!

My partner and I are restoring a 150 year old property in Covington, KY. The condition of the old windows in the home were unrepairable so we went with the recommendation by CHI to replace all 22 windows in the home with new. The speed, quality, professionalism and extremely fair price were spot-on! There is a reason why CHI has a great reputation.

We recieved 7 quotes from multiple companies when getting our roof and gutters done in February. Not only did they give us the best rate they were out within 2 days of estimate to tear off a 27 year old roof and had it replaced within that same day. Dave was professional, cleaned up the mess and worked to ensure we were satisfied. We HIGHLY recommend him and his company!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

      • Trim repair:
        • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
        • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
      • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
      • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
        • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
        • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
          • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
