On April 5, 2017, I reached out on Thumbtack to find a landscaper for our property. We had moved into a new home in January, and just had the standard “builder” type landscaping which we did not like. Within minutes of posting I was contacted by City Pro Services Ltd and we soon began chatting back and forth. City Pro Services is a family-owned business, with the entire family taking part in getting the job done. Andy and Julie set up a time to come and look at our property to see what we had, listened to what we saw as our vision, and made numerous recommendations as to what could work for us. As we worked out a plan they came and met with us a second time to offer more suggestions, and explained how everything would be done. Andy made sure that the plants we wanted would be appropriate for the areas we were going to landscape (sun vs. shade plants). By mid-May we finally settled on a workable plan along with pricing. These are some of the things they did for us: 1) Installation of new shrubs and perennials in front bed. 2) Installation of topsoil, river rocks, and mulch in front bed areas with 25-year weed barrier fabric. 3) New beds by the mailbox area and on other side of driveway, with topsoil, and river rocks splashing in some small perennials to accent. 4) Created a flower bed down the side of the house with hydrangeas, topsoil, and mulch. 5) Planted 4 trees. 6) Created a flower bed in back yard corner with some perennials. 7) Transplant existing plants from the front yard bed to the shed area. 8) Installed topsoil around shed for plants. 9) Installed mulch around shed areas. 10) Installed annuals in all beds on the entire property. 11) Installed river rock and ornamental grass around the outside air-conditioning unit. 12) Installed river rock drainage for the downspouts instead of concrete drains. 13) Installed small river rock for path going from back patio to shed entrance – included river rock and 25 year week barrier fabric. 14) Prepped lot for sod by tilling, cutting, and grading, as well as installing 28 yards of top soil. 15) We purchased sod for side yard areas, and they provided labor for installation. Also 25lbs of starter fertilizer for pre-sodding. It did take them a while to get us on the schedule, but that was only due to the weather and the fact that they had multiple other jobs going on. Once they started the job they often came in full-force with everyone in the family working hard to get the job done. I will tell you that with the bad soil that we have (very hard clay), they often had to work extra hard to accomplished with would have otherwise been fairly simple. Digging the holes for the 4 trees they planted was not an easy task! Because of our bad soil, Andy did everything he could to set us up for success with everything he planted. He created raised beds with prime topsoil, and used weed barrier fabric to help keep the weeds down. When we purchased our new home, we purchased the empty lot next to us which had not been developed. We had them prep and lay the sod on that lot. Again, with the soil being so bad, and full of rocks, Andy recommended that they prep the lot and cover it with quality top soil prior to laying the sod. It was a lot of hard work for them, but, again, they wanted to make sure that we were set up for success. It was a very large area, but they did a great job and it made everything look amazing. Our main requests upon first discussion, was telling them that we loved color and wanted low maintenance. Not only did City Pro Services “meet” our desires, but they “far exceeded” our expectations. Andy was responsive to our every need, was willing to make changes or additions without question, and made sure to educate us along the way as to what needed to be done to make sure that we are able to easily maintain everything they had done. One thing that I really appreciated about Andy, was that he would personally pick out the very best plants that he could. This was especially evident with the hydrangeas that he selected for the side of the house. They are “show stoppers” to be sure! Would I hire them again? You bet I would!! I’m sure that I will be calling them throughout the coming years to just do some maintenance and cleanup of whatever needs to be done for the next season. They are a hard-working family business, who aim to please, and are willing to work hard to get the job done. D. Scott

My husband and I had a couple rooms painted, a wall repair, a ceiling water damage repair, and a sink installation. Everyone we worked with was so kind and respectful. They were always on time and communicated with my husband and I very step of the way. The job they did was amazing. I added on services midway through with no hassle and quick turn time. I changed paint color for one room with no grief. They did all the little extras to make us thrilled. Even did a few paint touch ups we didn't even request. For the ceiling repair, they went out of their way to match the paint color on our ceiling that was painted in the 1990's - it looks amazing! We've already asked for another estimate for another job. Will be hiring them again. Reasonable price and excellent services!! You won't go wrong!

Although I did not hire Craig, that was not his fault, there were extenuating circumstances on my end. Craig was great about coming to the house promptly and providing me with solutions and quotes. Would recommend somebody contacting Craig for their future landscaping needs.

As new homeowners and new parents, we didn't have time to attend to our yard the way it needed so we hired Green Boys for plant/weed removal and laying down tarp and rocks. They were right within our budget and did quality work, our yard is now ready to be enjoyed! We have hired them twice and will continue to as projects come up. Definitely recommend!

I contracted with Mark Koeninger and his company in the fall of 2015 to build a covered outdoor living area and the rear of my existing home. The project was completed in the spring of 2016 after I asked them to pause the construction during the holidays and cold temperatures. Mark and his company KPS Architecture and Landscape worked with me with the beginning drawings and plans and provided some very good advice that would make my outdoor living area very unique and have a professional finish. With any large project there were decisions and changes made by me the homeowner but working with KPS on these changes was a good experience. The crew working daily on my project were very professional and were very respectful of my property and maintaining a clean appearance throughout the completion of the project. They were very open to suggestions and were very thorough when explaining the timing and tasks still needing completion to keep the project on track. I will end by saying my outdoor living area and I only met but exceeded my expectations that I envisioned when breaking ground. My neighbors and family have also praise the design and craftsmanship. I have and would again recommend KPS Architecture & Landscape to friends and family. Thank You!!

I hired the Lance’s cuts /Kevin’s home improvement team for a bathroom shower remodel/installation. I trust them in my home and appreciate their work ethic. I have since continued to use them for this and that and I would recommend them. Pricing was fair and work completed in a timely manner.

We just started using Chad for our landscaping services and so far we have been very pleased. We closed on a house recently and it appeared that the yard had been neglected for a month or more. Chad transformed the landscaping from an abandoned yard with two foot weeds to a neatly trimmed garden. He also pressure cleaned our driveway, sidewalk and patio area. So far, so good! We are counting on Chad to keep our outdoor areas looking good throughout the seasons.

Derrick and his team have done several really varied types of jobs for us. First, in order to deal with a water problem in our backyard, they dug and installed a 110-ft. french drain last Fall. It was a big job where they actually had to take our deck apart and put it back together to get done, and they did it well ~ water problem solved. He even came back in the Spring when I had a few questions, just to ease my mind about the water and explain to me again how it works once the Spring rains started. Didn't make a dime, just providing excellent service. Then recently, B&B did a fairly large Spring clean-up of flower beds and slice seeded my yard. Again, showed up exactly when they said they would, wonderful communication about some issues they encountered, and a completed job that looks amazing. The issues that came up worried me, as they were unexpected and could have cost me a lot more money than I had budgeted, but Derrick came up with a pretty inventive idea to fix the problem AND gave me a deal on it to boot. I won't ever consider another landscape company after working with this one. Much more than landscapers ~ problem solvers. AND they don't consider it finished until it looks GREAT!

For the past ten years my wife and I have hired someone to do our mulch. We've had large companys install our mulch, and we've had two guys and a pick up do the job. And every year its seems to be a diffrent amount of mulch (between 18 and 25 yards). Last year we hired Sean and Scott to do the job. I called and set up a time for Sean to come out, he showed up on time. He measured our flower beds, he gave us a quote of 16 yards and a great price to do the job. We set up a time for them to come out. Their team did an awesome job, they trimmed, edged and installed the mulch. My wife and I are totally 100% satisfied!!!! We will use their service the next 10 years.

Mark and his team installed a drainage system into my yard to fix some sitting water issues. They also installed a window well around my basement window. Everything was done in a timely fashion and at at a price that really helped me out. The best thing about working with Mark is that he was honest and upfront about what I did and did not need, and also about what kinds of things I could do on my own to maintain my yard. If I ever need any other landscaping done, I'm going with Treeline.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

      • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
      • Read online reviews of client experiences.
      • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
      • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
      • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
