Hired them to tear down old fence and porch rails. Then they installed all new and stained them. Tony ensured throughout the process that we were satisfied. His crew showed great attention to detail. We plan to use him for future projects.

R&D Property Services is a family owned business and for my money they treated us like family. I am very impressed with their work quality and professionalism. We needed a new fence and a screened porch addition. This was a challenging project. Sam offered good insight and worked side by side with us to deliver the project we wanted. I highly recommend R&D Property services. And will use them again.

I called Kingdom Exteriors for my elderly mother who had a very leaky roof. She is very satisfied with her new roof. The job included a ridge vent, membrane roofing on a flat porch and shingles on the pitched roof. The price was right and the work was done expertly. Mr. Lamb's crew was prompt, professional and fast. The arrived in the morning and did not leave until the entire roof was completed that evening. They cleaned up completely and the house looks great!

We hired Brian and his crew when we needed some work done on our porch. Brian came out personally to assess the damage, and gave us a thorough estimate (and explanation) regarding the work and materials that would be needed. His team completed the work within a few days of our meeting, and completed the job quickly. They left the surrounding area as they found it, cleaning up the considerable debris that piled up while doing the job. We have a great old house that will undoubtably require updating and repairs as time goes on. Brian and Dream Catcher will be our go-to guys for any future work. Highly recommended!

Thanks so much to Watkins from Cincinnati Local Handyman! He's an amazing electrician that listened to what I needed and addressed concerns regarding a dimly lit front door/porch area. He installed new lighting (keeping with the look of our older house) which looks wonderful and makes for a lovely place for folks to sit on the porch and enjoy a nice evening. Very nice, professional and knowledgeable electrician!

Replaced 3 porch pillars. Brad was very professional, friendly, efficient, flexible, and more reasonably priced than the other quotes I received. His work was high quality. I would definitely recommend him for any home remodeling project. I will be contacting him in the near future to complete some other home projects I have pending.

We had a water leak in the kitchen that ended creating a project that included: removing an old range, cutting some cabinets to fit the new range, patching, painting and wall papering. After no luck with reliability with another contractor, we tried Thumbtack and found Jerry. What a blessing in disguise that the others were flakes- he has been terrific! If you read other reviews and think, "This guy is too good to be true," don't worry; he isn't! He is just a rare breed! Where to start....first, he was very fair and reasonable on the price. Apparently there is an industry standard pricing guide that set process high (hence the sticker shock with everyone else). If he feels that it is unreasonable, he works down from there. His rate was reasonable enough that we could add in changing the title on our backsplash. But this does NOT mean quality is sacrificed. He is more than experienced and it shows. He is extremely neat (never leaves a mess), and his work is careful. A true generalist, he has ended up helping us with other problems that ironically occurred while he was here. I asked him to remove the sink for me so that I could apply some stone finishing to our counters, and he saw that our wiring for our disposal and dishwasher was not up to code (and it wasn't!). He fixed that. Our basement had water in it after rain one night; he helped up trouble shoot where the leak was coming from (it was from a crazy odd place, but he helped our insurance adjuster to find the leak! Our adjuster liked him too, btw). He also fixed a support on our porch that was cracking. From drywall to roofs, he is a household renaissance man. He really went beyond the call of duty for us, and was never, ever "pushy". To top it off, he is very kind, friendly and honest. A couple of days he needed an extra set of hands and brought a couple of workers with him, who were also neat, skilled and polite. I could go on but you get the picture! ;-) My father was extremely handy this way and always did anything around the house with skill, care and integrity. I didn't know anyone else was cut from the same cloth until we met Jerry. If you are lucky enough to grab him, do so.

Replace front sidewalk; replace entrance sidewalk to porch; and built a sidewalk from backyard porch to backyard gate. A job well done! The job could have been completed in a timely manner during the first week, but it took an additional week to complete the job due to personal issue and rains.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
