I hired Joe to do some plumbing work at my home. He was very efficient in replacing an outside hose faucet, plumbing standpipes into my waste stack for 2 existing washing machines. He repaired an older style leaking shower, rebuilt a dripping vanity faucet as well as connected my ice maker and kitchen faucet to a cabinet filtration water system. I highly recommend his services.

Outstanding PLUS... Don is great to work with and makes sure it's done right, not just what I ask for. I wanted outside outlets and a new barn light... he did the work plus extra maintenance and cleanup to make sure it was code perfect! He educates me first to get my OK, then performs the work efficiently and completely. He cleaned up a real mess a past contractor had left me with! I'm already making a list for other projects with Don.

Tony at AGI Property Services was great. He came out the very next day and did a great job mowing and trimming our lawn. He is priced very reasonable and does a nice job. I would not hesitate to recommend him for one time or recurring work. I have dealt with contractors for years as publisher of a home magazine and I can tell you Tony and AGI Property Services are very good at what they do.

This contractor has been very upfront with all the work and has informed me the steps of the project and has taken my input with desires and wants. The cost and reasons for the expenses have been totally justified and appreciated. I've had experience with some "jack-legs" and totally appreciate the work this contractor has done and will definitely utilized the services of this company for further work on my home. I highly recommend this contractor.

My hallway toilet was leaking through the sewer hole down to the basement. I explained what I thought the problem was to Brian via Thumbtack and over the phone. He brought a new wax ring to install on the bottom of the toilet and checked the water damage from the leaking. He and Amber diagnosed that it was only the wax ring that needed to be replaced. They suggested spray bleaching the area in the basement where the leak was so the black mold wouldn't spread. It only took 25mins to get the job done. They new exactly what to do and how to do it. They had the tools ready to go to make the job quick. I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for help with any household project.

We tried several other plumbers who were not able to help us clear a clogged sewer vent on the roof, but United did. I wouldn't definitely hire them again!

I had a leak going from my condo on the 3rd floor to the condo unit below me. At first, I called RotoRooter to come out. They checked the leak area, said it was a pipe, and would take an hour to fix. After another 10 minutes, they said they would need multiple pipe repairs and they would need to pull out the bathtub itself to get to the pipes to replace them. They estimated it would take about 8-10 hours of work and cost anywhere around $3,500 to $4,500 dollars after labor and materials to fix. I was not buying their explanation. They charged me $229 dollars anyways for their 'hour' of work. I looked on Thumbtack and Ron was the first one to respond. He came out the next morning, saw it was a different issue with a cracked seal around the tub drain, fixed, and repaired it for $145. The most important thing to me is getting the right issue and fixing it. I trust Ron's professionalism and work quality. Ron also assured me if anything else came up, he would come back out to investigate. 5 stars for Ron and I would recommend him to others. I will use him again in the future if plumbing items come up.

I had budgeted for over a year to remodel my Master bathroom and I am generally a bit nervous about contractors in my home. Greg had a vision for my bathroom that I never could have possible envisioned myself. He has a "designer eye" without the exorbitant designer price tag of some of the other contractors. The owner of "If I had a Hammer" is Greg Wentz. Greg put me at ease throughout the entire process. Quality job that was on time and with no big fuss. I LOVE my new bathroom!

Mr. Dix, sent his drywall specialist, Sam Lovins, to perform this job. Sam not only did what we contracted todo, but went beyond the call of duty, and secured a wall, he repaired, to the floor, where it had been knocked loose by a truck bumper. I highly recommend Sam Lovins, for drywall repair, and of course Mr. Dix company, for employing such professionals as Sam Lovins. I cannot speak highly enough about the quality of repairs this company provided...

If you're tired of searching for an all around contractor look no further: Chilton's Prestige Remodeling is your answer. No job is too big or too small and the owner, Bob is very talented and commits 100% to any job he takes on. He's pleasant to do business with and trustworthy in every aspect. Since being referred to his company a few years ago, he has done many jobs around our house and several of our friend's homes and their rental properties. Always exceeds your expectations. Our first job was having our masterbath/shower remodeled. It is beautiful and Bob has the skill & knowledge to be as detailed oriented as you desire. Another job was fixing our ceiling & crown molding in our two-story foyer which had water damage and now matches perfectly. Troubleshooted and solved our Grohe kitchen faucet that had limited hot water pressure since moving in 10+ years ago and was told by many plumbers/repairmen that problem couldn't be resolved other than to replace with new spigot. Replaced our outdoor lamppost and mounted fixtures amongst many other indoor & outdoor jobs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
