My 10 year old daughter has studied piano under Mr. John Derrickson at Miami Valley Music Instruction for over three years, and the growth has been remarkable. She was completely new in learning this instrument. Under his guidance, she is learning to become fluent in reading music, can sing while playing, and receives valuable lessons on the history and origins of the music she performs. Mr. Derrickson is more than an instructor he is a gifted educator who creates meaningful challenges, motivates his students to give their best, and truly aims for their success. I am a singer songwriter who learned classical piano when I was younger and I was looking for a short term teacher to up my level in playing and composing. Mark and I spent three months working on different jazz progressions and soloing techniques, as well as analyzing theory so that I can use some of the techniques in my own songwriting. He is very personable and kind, making sure that I understood the concepts for each class, and really broke things down into strategies that are useful for me.
