We started looking for a trainer for our German Shepherd (Lucy) a few months back. We found bill at bulletproof dog training on thumbtack and I was very impressed with his background. Bill was very helpful explaining all of his training options, even sending multiple videos. We decided to try another trainer due to the price. After a few lessons with the other trainer we knew Lucy was going to need a different trainer. We dug a little deeper into bullet proof dog training and decided to put plans into action. We dropped Lucy off with bill for 15 days and I simply can not praise these guys enough. We started receiving videos of her a few days later and I thought we were getting videos of a different dog. We were afraid when we got our dog back she would be a robot, but this is not the case. She’s still the playful love able pup we dropped off, but now she listens to us! They spent plenty of time with us when we picked her up to make sure that we were comfortable with all of the commands that were taught. The entire staff was extremely friendly and I could tell they truly cared about Lucy! I’m very glad we found this place and came around, I just wish we would have went with them right away. I highly recommend bulletproof dog training.

We really appreciated all of Cheryl’s help with training our German Shepherd Sasha! Being a first time dog owner I wanted to make sure I was setting my dog up for success and she helped me do that. We also really enjoyed going through the good citizen class!

I recently took my 7 month old Anatolian shepherd to Advance K-9 due to issues I was having with her in house breaking her, and the normal puppy behaviors that were getting out of control with me trying to train her. My puppy stayed with Advance K-9 for two weeks. Now that I have her back it is like having a new dog. She is focused, obedient and is now thriving on taking commands from me. I am definitely on the track I need to be with my dog. And could not have done so without Advance K-9. My family would gladly bring in future dogs to them and would recommend others to his company.

Stephanie and Bret are very professional and extremely knowledgable. They have helped my husband and me turn our dog into a well-behaved German Shepherd Dog. They were quick to respond to my first inquiry about dog training. I like that they not only were interested in our one dog, but also looked at the whole pack (as we have a few dogs) and even evaluated them as a group. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a great experience training your pup.

Megan worked with both of my German shepherds. My first German shepherd had some dog aggression issues but Megan worked above and beyond to not only give us the resources and knowledge to work through his issue, but gave my dog the confidence he needed to be in situations with other dogs. My second GSD was just 7 weeks old when Megan began obedience and puppy training with her- now, 8 months later my puppy is a fully trained dog.

Elissa is a thorough, skilled and caring trainer. She listened to my concerns/needs. After meeting me and my dog, she developed a workable plan that met my rewards-based method preference. I rescued an 11-month German Shorthaired Pointer who had a very high prey drive and absolutely no recall. My GSP is now a reliable trail and beach dog who responds to a code word and/or whistle. ("Come" no longer worked when we met Elissa.) Elissa worked with us 4-5 times, but mostly she gave me the understanding, skills and followup exercises to work with my dog myself. She explained behavior theory behind the exercises, showed me how to properly carry them out. She followed each training session with detailed notes and other resources. Success wasn't instant, but steady. With Elissa's help, I have a trustworthy companion whom I feel comfortable letting off leash.

Working with Mike was wonderful! When I first contacted him about training my german shepherd(Sawyer) I was very skeptical of sending her anywhere to be trained! After speaking with him I was much more comfortable. He was great about answering every question and being honest with me on what was needed. Before I contacted Mike things were difficult with Sawyer; she was very energetic and impulsive. She chased my cats and small dog constantly, she would get very excited and jump on my infant. We tried walking her daily, hoping it would wear her out, unfortunately it was just a workout for us because she yanked and pulled the entire time! My husband and I tried the training at Petsmart and it wasn't successful! She went to Mike for two weeks and when she returned we were shocked by the changes! No chasing cats or our smaller dog, no jumping on the baby, she's very calm, and we can walk her!!! I was even able to take her to the store with me and have her leash in my pocket as she stayed by my side the entire time even with people coming up to her! I would highly recommend Mike! He goes above and beyond not only with his training, but with teaching you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
