Daniel and his team were prompt, quick, courteous, and professional. They moved my old AC unit around the house and rerouted electric and piping accordingly. Would recommend to others, and if I have work in the future I will look their way first.

Ed was so flexible with our schedule and really worked to resolve our plumbing issues. He even made an extra trip to Lowe’s for a part because we had a leak we didn’t realize we had. Very much appreciated!

I had a leakage issue with plumbing under my sink, so I contacted Joel on Sunday night. He was at my home early Monday morning to fix the problem. Joel found the cause of the issue quickly — improper installation of a pipe on my part after replacing my garbage disposal. He installed the pipe correctly, did some leak checks, and even took some time to educate me on what to do if similar issues happen in the future. Joel is very professional and easy to work with, and his rate is affordable. I would definitely recommend Joel and Father Fixit. Thank you, Joel!

I talked and texted on the phone and he seems to know a lot about plumbing. He explained in detail during our conversation about the possibilities for my plumbing situation. But my old plumber came back so I did not hire Aaron, though I was about to. He was responsive and quick.

I highly recommend Advance Waterworks. They were very thorough and worked within my time restraints. Pull toilet and replace with new one noticed that the Flanch was bad and informed me that he was replacing while the toilet was pulled. Service was excleent and they very professional and poliet on explaning what was being done and replaced. I will refer this company to all that is in need of any plumbing needs. Very reasonable rates. I am a single mom and they fit in my budget.

Columbus Local Handyman have great customer service, from scheduling the appointment to showing up on time and getting the work done within the estimated time frame. It was important to have a licensed, bonded and insured company, and to have a 1-year warranty on their work. They can do electrical and plumbing work too, and it's usually less expensive than their competitors.

Ron did an amazing job. He was the only one that was willing to do plumbing. I couldn’t be more happier that my plumbing is fixed and everything works. Ron even notified me on any issues that he ran into and provided great suggestions to those solutions. They were very professional and worked very hard. He did such a great job that I recommended him to my Aunt!

Tommy was a very hard worker and stayed until the job was finished. We had to move hot and cold water pipes over about 12" from basement up, plumb for a 2nd sink in the hall bathroom and move the drain for larger shower.

Monica is a excellent plumber, and carpenter, she's reliable, and selfconscious of her work, she built my shower in 2009. It took about 2wks to build. And has done other jobs for me. Put in a new Kitchen Sink and has fixed other things. And is always on time, if she can't be there on time she will call you to let you know. She's really great! Wish she still lived in Ohio And her prices are really great! I can't think of anything she could do to better her work. I would hire her again in a minute! Thank You Edda Leverette

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

      • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
      • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
      • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
      • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
      • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

      • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
      • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
      • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
