Jim was at our house within 24 hours and not only did he complete the cabinet removal job I requested, he installed the dishwasher too! It's great to find someone that can do carpentry and plumbing. We're going to have him back to do more work.

Daniel and his team were prompt, quick, courteous, and professional. They moved my old AC unit around the house and rerouted electric and piping accordingly. Would recommend to others, and if I have work in the future I will look their way first.

Mr. Riley was amiable, polite, easy to relate to, quick to fix all the small problems I had around the house; grouting, hanging two huge mirrors, electrical, plumbing in bathroom, front door lock, as well as hooking up my Bose radio wifi. He did great with time management; exhibited great craftsman skills and was tidy with his cleanups. It was a pleasure doing business with him and I plan to use him again for other projects.

I had a leakage issue with plumbing under my sink, so I contacted Joel on Sunday night. He was at my home early Monday morning to fix the problem. Joel found the cause of the issue quickly — improper installation of a pipe on my part after replacing my garbage disposal. He installed the pipe correctly, did some leak checks, and even took some time to educate me on what to do if similar issues happen in the future. Joel is very professional and easy to work with, and his rate is affordable. I would definitely recommend Joel and Father Fixit. Thank you, Joel!

I talked and texted on the phone and he seems to know a lot about plumbing. He explained in detail during our conversation about the possibilities for my plumbing situation. But my old plumber came back so I did not hire Aaron, though I was about to. He was responsive and quick.

After Rufus inspected our plumbing problem, he advised of the few things it may be and what work would entail based on what was wrong. We decided to try the easiest fix, and thankfully it worked. Rufus was thorough explaining what was wrong and how he fixed it, which I appreciated. He even left the extra washers that he ended up changing. I would recommend him and the whole Columbus Local Handyman.

Alan was our service technician who we hired to patch a couple spots in the ceiling that had been water damaged. We also hired him to do some plumbing work while he was here. Alan did a great job and we are totally satisfied. He went over and above our expectations in quality and was constantly making sure that we were satisfied. Alan took the time to discuss the project work in detail so we knew exactly what was being done. He even showed me a few things that will help me with other future projects. The costs were very reasonable and I even got a military discount on top!! We will definitely hire Alan for future projects. I highly recommend him and this company.

I was introduced to John Corry by Randy Best, one of the top commercial real estate brokers in Columbus, which says a lot about John's dependability. I acquired a 24 unit building in South Columbus and John was there to help me rehab each unit one by one. He also did a great deal of welding work on a series of exterior steel porches that needed extensive repairs. John can pretty much do anything including HVAC, plumbing and electric as well as general handyman work, and he does it well and for a reasonable price. One of his greatest assets is that I can trust him to go in and quote a project, send me before and after pictures, and get it down in a reasonable amount of time, all while I am out of state, which says a lot about his trustworthiness and reliability.

Well we ran into a problem with backup in sewage pipes and had a few plumbing companies out to assess the work. Some very high estimates for extensive work to be done on pipes and plumbing. Joe’s Drain cleaning came in and gave an honest assessment of the work that needed to be done and fixed the problem for us! Awesome work!

He was prompt and did an excellent job. He was also very honest. We thought we wanted to have a wall mounted toilet switched to floor mounted. He explained that it was costly and made a mess. We will use him again in a few weeks on another job.

Tommy was a very hard worker and stayed until the job was finished. We had to move hot and cold water pipes over about 12" from basement up, plumb for a 2nd sink in the hall bathroom and move the drain for larger shower.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
