Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

I was very pleased at the results of my dog Baby's training. She is a 90lb dog who was constantly pulling on the leash, trying to chase squirrels and other dogs. She is now much calmer and can walk off leash and I am amazed at the results!

Le is very knowledgeable and professional dog trainer. We hired him because our adopted dog, Leo wanted nothing to do with us in the beginning; we couldn’t get our dog to listen to us (even with treats and toys). Le was able to help us get down to the basics and now we have a great relationship with our dog. We saw improvements in our dog after the first training (and of course our continued training in private with Leo as our homework from Le). Le also helped us when we had issues with Leo’s doggy day care. Gave us tips and advices and his professional opinion about whether or not Leo has been having behavioral problem in the day care. Le has always been available to us whenever we needed him, he’s always a text away, it’s very easy to communicate with him. He’s very helpful from training to dog food questions! We recommend him!!!

You lucky dog owner, you. You get to pick CJ as your pet's trainer. She has worked w all kinds of animals all over the country and has even won an international award. She trains in her lovely and offers a meet and greet to see whether or not she can meet you dog's need. She is unfailing patient and kind. She gave me a review sheet for basic commands. She employed her own pet for "shadow training for my very scared rescue dog.You won't find a more caring professional trainer in all of Cinti. Her price is reasonable. Again, you are a lucky dog owner, you.

We started looking for a trainer for our German Shepherd (Lucy) a few months back. We found bill at bulletproof dog training on thumbtack and I was very impressed with his background. Bill was very helpful explaining all of his training options, even sending multiple videos. We decided to try another trainer due to the price. After a few lessons with the other trainer we knew Lucy was going to need a different trainer. We dug a little deeper into bullet proof dog training and decided to put plans into action. We dropped Lucy off with bill for 15 days and I simply can not praise these guys enough. We started receiving videos of her a few days later and I thought we were getting videos of a different dog. We were afraid when we got our dog back she would be a robot, but this is not the case. She’s still the playful love able pup we dropped off, but now she listens to us! They spent plenty of time with us when we picked her up to make sure that we were comfortable with all of the commands that were taught. The entire staff was extremely friendly and I could tell they truly cared about Lucy! I’m very glad we found this place and came around, I just wish we would have went with them right away. I highly recommend bulletproof dog training.

We really appreciated all of Cheryl’s help with training our German Shepherd Sasha! Being a first time dog owner I wanted to make sure I was setting my dog up for success and she helped me do that. We also really enjoyed going through the good citizen class!

We have two puppies. The oldest puppy has a problem with guarding. It had gotten so bad that we feared for the safety of our youngest puppy. Wish we had contacted this trainer earlier as she has made a huge difference. Our older puppy has improved dramatically. He is a much happier puppy now than he was before we started the training. We could not have achieved this remarkable progress without this training. Would highly recommend this trainer to anyone, but especially to an owner with a dog has guarding problems.

Randy was EXTREMELY responsive to my initial request for information. He invited me out and my dog out to his facility just to check it out. I was sold the moment i walked through the door! He and his staff are absolutely wonderful. They truly love dogs and treated our dog like a cherished member of the family (which is what she is to us). They are very adept at taking a dog from unruly and undisciplined to calm and compliant. We did the 5 day program and were very happy with the results. What i like the most though is they stand behind their training 100%. Anytime we need to take our dog back for a tune-up or just want additional tips it is at no charge! While the service did seem a little pricey initially i can honestly say we got our money's worth and then some!

Meghan and Bill both trained Max for part of the 15 days and then Meghan took over and she did what I would consider amazing. I have been needing to use a walker with a fold down chair so I can walk and then sit if need be, I have been working on regaining my strength over the past 2 years. Max stays right next to me, he actually does a "heel" better with the walker. He also does an awesome "heel" next to a handicap scooter for when I go to the store. He stays right by it and really does not pay attention to anyone around. I just can't say how glad I received an excellent recommendation from Ranger's grandmother. Her son had him training at the Ohio facility. Max was trained at the San Antonio facility. Thank you, Bullet Proof Dog Training!

I went to CJ's home for training. She has a very comfortable, clean, dog friendly home. She immediately made me and my dog, Simon, comfortable. She took time to get to know me and my dog. She asked me what I thought was important to know etc... We talked about the issues I had in regard to Simon's behaviors - and mine. We got started right away. It took some time to find out what Simon would respond to as far as a reward but she persisted and we found success. We have attended 3 visits and CJ does a great job of showing me what to do first and allows me time to practice etc... Simon responds to her and I feel very confident upon leaving what I need to practice. She is open to many questions and is very patient with me. She is flexible with my schedule, punctual and very competent. I have been nothing but impressed.

After several professional opinions, I concluded that there was no hope for my aggressive dog. He would need a shock collar, drugs, and ongoing obedience training with no guarantee that anything would work well. He was neutered last week as my last-ditch effort to calm him down and so far the aggression has escalated. When Sheryl called, I was skeptical that anyone could offer us real help. But she asked questions the others didn't and, based on my answers, she is confident she can help. We've not yet started, because we spoke only yesterday. But she gave me hope that I'd left behind months ago. I was preparing to return him to the breeder, but now I'll see what she has to offer. I'm looking forward to working with her.
