Donna and her assistant did a great job. I moved out and left a real mess of a place with cat and dog hair and bad odor. They worked for over 3 hours and left the place much better than it was. I would refer them and use them again.

I'm so happy I took advantage of Terry's free evaluation because not only did he address all my concerns he gave me a few pointers before our first lesson. I honestly didn't think my dog could be off leash. No way. Yet after only 3 lessons, he was right--I walked my dog around the neighborhood off leash with zero reactivity passing people. AMAZING! Terry is the best hands down! He makes dog training so easy.

Katie was absolutely wonderful to work with. She was knowledgeable and friendly. She taught us so much about our dog’s body language and behavior; and gave us great strategies to help our dog’s fear aggression. I would absolutely hire her again for any dog training needs. She knows her stuff and has an obvious passion for helping dogs!

Amy has been fantastic to work with. We’ve had many people say they’ve noticed a change since we’ve been working with her. We needed the training just as much as our dog did! I have already recommended her to a few people who told me they needed training for their dogs.

Josh and Brittany are incredible. We signed up our 10 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback for their 2 week program and had an awesome experience. As soon as we walked in the door, we knew Nala was in good hands. They treat each dog as if it's their own. Nala came into the program with several bad habits (jumping, nipping, counter surfing, barking, etc.). The typical puppy stuff. The drop off was fantastic. Josh and Brittany explained the program in detail and made sure they addressed all of our concerns. Not more than a half hour after drop off, Josh had already sent me an email with an update saying Nala had settled in nicely. Every thing about these folks is first class. Throughout the two weeks, we were provided with updates through social media and email. Our minds were at complete ease throughout the two weeks. Pick up went amazing as well. Josh and Brittany went over everything they had taught Nala and made sure we were comfortable and set up for success at home. Nala has only been home a couple days now and her bad behaviors have essentially disappeared. And, she hasn't lost any of her personality. A miracle! We cannot promote Lead the Way enough. Great program and great people. They are on a different level from any other training program. Thank you so much Josh and Brittany!

Do you have to bribe, threaten, or trick your dog into listening? Does your dog have to be shut away instead of enjoying life with you? Do you know your dog could be great, if only he wasn’t so wild and out of control? If your dog is barking, biting, chasing, running away, and in general ruining your life, we can help. If your dog listens when there’s nothing better to do, but does what he wants as soon as something more interesting comes along, we can fix that too. The worse your dog is today, the better he can be tomorrow.

About

My husband and I have been providing pet sitting services for several years now! We are no longer offering boarding in our home (we recently moved to a different state and are living in an apartment until we buy a new home), but I am still offering pet sitting and overnight stays. I'd be happy to send you a link to our old website, so you can check out all of our positive reviews! Previous families we used to care for are also available as references. In addition to our own little business, I worked with a pet sitting company in Tampa, FL, carrying for a variety of pets, for a couple years. The owner of the company is likewise willing to vouch for us!

About

Meet me at my training site, The Green Barn 4 Dogs, and I will help you learn how to train/communicate with your dog. I'll show you ways to have fun, so both you and your dog will learn new skills.

About

If you're against boarding your dog, then give me a call! I'll make sure your furry friend gets the exercise he or she needs as well as socialization (with your permission!) at the local dog parks. I have plenty of experience with dogs and no dog is too big or small (or crazy) to handle! I am willing to bathe, feed, play and cuddle as much as necessary - either your place or mine! This can be a regular arrangement or whenever you need me! Give me a call :)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
