Dave was great! He was so professional and made sure we were informed every step of the way. The process never wavered from what he said would happen and there weren't any surprises. The deck was quality because he had the expertise to make sure it was. I am recommending him to anyone I know interested in having a deck put on their house. Thanks Dave!

My husband and I finally decided we wanted to remodel our bathroom and Mr. Cox surpassed my expectations with his sense of style, craftsmanship, unique creativity, and originality in his style. He was professional and completed the job earlier than our agreed upon date/time. He surprised me with his attention to details/color schemes/custom touch. We have hired Mr. Cox on four separate occasions; our bathroom remodel, interior painting of our 3 bedroom house including ceilings, doors, and trim), exterior paint on doors/shutters/mailbox/hardware and gutter cleaning/repair, and about a month ago he repaired and fixed our chain link fence around our backyard. He poured concrete for the posts, moved the fence in from our property line about 12 feet to allow more room for parking in the alley, and distributed fresh gravel in the parking space. He is a talented young man and we are glad to know him! Thank you, Darrell!

I contacted Mustard General Contracting, Home Improvements, Handyman Service to install and stain four interior doors. Mark was highly professional and efficient in his work. He did a superb job of matching the stain of the other doors. I particularly liked the fact that he responded quickly to my call. I will be using him for additional projects in preparation for selling our house.

Loved the remodel of my bathroom that Jason and Armand did. They were fast an efficient and very easy to work with. The job involved removing a large jacuzzi tub and replacing it with a large walk in shower. No hidden costs with these guys. They do the work and the home owner buys the material. Worked well for me. I will definitely use them again. Thanks Armand and Jason.

Total bathroom remodel on my 1920s home. Completely new design, new fixtures, porcelain tile floor, drywall, baseboard, paint, etc. He enlarged our bathroom drastically by taking 2/3 of a walk-in closet and installed a beautiful tile shower. BEST PART: our gorgeous custom handcrafted live-edge wood vanity!!! Joel has an art degree and it SHOWS!! We're getting so many compliments. Also the tile floor is PERFECT and he worked with us to source quality materials that fit our budget. He's also better at communicating with us than other contractors we've known. He really cares about his work and was realistic about estimates and time frames (the job took longer than we expected but he was upfront every step of the way). If you're tired of "big-box" decor and want something unique, we definitely recommend Joel for design, remodeling, and custom work!

Dave did an excellent job installing marble and porcelain flooring in our home. He gave us a very reasonable estimate and the final cost did not vary from that estimate. The work was quite good and was performed in a timely manner. Dave was very polite, friendly and professional. His years of experience, pride and work ethics were clearly demonstrated while working for us. We will definately consider hiring him for any future projects.

Jeremy was a pleasure to work with! He was patient with us and took our project in phases that were easy to understand. He met and beat deadlines, stayed within budget, did amazing work and even repaired some items that were messed up from a previous contractor. We are thrilled with value we received from Prunick Building Services and highly recommend them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
