Stephanie helped with my individual tax prep for 2017. I am a non resident alien, which makes it not easy to file by myself. She made sure I had all the right documents and was very responsive. All the more commendable since we only communicated through emails. Overall, I had a great experience working with Stephanie, and 5 stars without question.

I had him for several individual tax planning meetings. He was detail described which way I should consider among many choices. He is my tax consultant for a long time. Only one thing is he will not push you to one direction and but he will say which way is better your situation.

Working with Ryan was so easy. I dropped off my documents with his assistant and by the end of the day she called to let me know my tax return was ready. When I came back to the office Ryan looked at my 2015 and 2016 tax returns and ended up getting me back an additional 1200.00 I can't imagine going anywhere else.

She seemed to really care that you received your maximum refund. I was only surprised in that she asked minimal questions about possible income/deductions that I may have had. For example, she asked about W-2's and 1099-INT, but not 1099-DIV. She asked about my home sale and donations, but not about business expenses and moving expenses. I have always prepared my own taxes, but with many new things in 2016 I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. I suppose I expected her to ask about every possible thing I did that I may not have received a form for. I also thought she would do my local taxes, but she only does federal and state. Only other concern is that she didn't tell me what all I needed to bring (i.e. my wife's ID) ahead of time. That all said, she did do a good job and was happy to answer all of my questions from the research I did on all possible income/deductions. She was very professional.

I am very happy Thumbtack turned me onto the great folks at KAS. In particular, Kevin Martin did a great job for us handling a couple of years of taxes that I had not been able to compute/process myself. I'm very pleased with how easy he made it: I travel a lot and he was able to accommodate my requests, almost all of it over the phone and via the web. He kept me apprised of where we were, what I needed to give him, and what was required to complete the job. What more could anyone ask for? That he was conveniently located to where we live was even better. :-)

Chuck did a great job with my IRS response, netting me more than $900 refund and another $5000+ of carryover. I would like to have seen a little more responsiveness in our communication. I will consider Chuck for future tax accounting needs!

I hate doing my taxes but she made me feel really comfortable and ended up being cheaper than it would’ve been if I did TurboTax on my own

About four years ago, our accountant left just a month before the tax filing deadline approached. We tried to hire a replacement accountant to get our taxes done in time but didn’t get any responses back except one from Legacy Tax Resolution. We spoke with their consultant on the phone who promised to visit our offices and go over the files. I remember they came the very next day and helped us file the return by the end of the week. I was quite impressed by their efficiency and knowledge of the tax laws. That is when we took them on board to do our taxes regularly. The great thing about this firm is that their auditors are happy to answer queries and help us improve our record keeping which makes the whole process simpler and faster. We have been with them for four years now and would continue to use this firm for the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who can file my taxes?

Any individual with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) is eligible to file your income taxes on your behalf. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the best candidate to provide the help you need with your income tax preparation. The IRS explains that CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are all allowed to legally represent their clients before the IRS. They have a more thorough understanding of tax code than an individual operating solely with a PTIN or an Annual Filing Season Program participant who provides their services on a volunteer basis. Consider the complexity of your tax return and what level of expertise you’ll require. Before entrusting someone with your private financial and personal information, do some research on their qualifications. The IRS has a searchable database where you can verify the background and credentials of your income tax preparation professional. Once you have selected someone, ask about their service fees and confirm their availability. Then provide them with all the documentation they require, including W-2s, 1099s and more. Always ask to review the paperwork before it is submitted, and never sign a blank tax return.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

  • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
  • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
  • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
  • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.
