Jesse and Tyler did a fantastic job on my bathroom remodel. They were great with communication, respectful of my home and property during demo and building, and they worked extremely hard. Never taking shortcuts or the easy way out. They took pride in their work, and even had some phenomenal suggestions on style and décor, based on my preferences. They always willingly worked around my crazy work schedule over a period of many weeks. They made me feel like I was their only customer, and on top of all of this, they were stand-up, friendly guys to work with through this whole process. When I am ready to do more work in my home, they will be my first choice!

We were very pleased with Michael's installation of our kitchen tile backsplash and concrete repairs to the house's foundation. He made sure he was doing things the way we wanted and kept us informed of how he'd go about the repairs. He worked the whole time he was here and tried to save me money by using some of his own materials. He's an honest person and I could tell from our conversations that he's a dedicated family man. Will definitely use him again and for my elderly mother's home, too!

Shane installed a patio door on the rear of my home. There was a window in the spot, but no patio door, so framing needed to be completed and the exterior needed to be finished. Weather and bad luck threw some curveballs in the project, but nothing that could have been avoided. My only reason for the good vs excellent review is the the job was not completely finished. The exterior finishing and drywall finishing was left up to me. I am capable, so it's not a big deal, but I assumed this would have been taken care of. Overall, Shane was nice, professional, clean, and responsive.

Brad and his crew did an amazing job on concrete work at my home. He poured a new step and a sidewalk and it looks wonderful. His estimate was very reasonable and he was very easy to work with. I will definitely contact him for any home improvement needs going forward.

Left to our own skill as interior decorators, we were doomed... Patti came in and listened to our ideas for our kitchen. In short order she created a plan, and we were on our way to what has turned out to be our dream kitchen. Chip and Joanna would be jealous of the final result, and under the budget that we had planned to spend! We highly recommend Patti Johnson!

This is my 4th project utilizing the services of Jenny Lyon of Interior Attire, and have 2 more in-the-waiting. Re-upholstering a mid-century leather chair, re-designing cushions for 1950's patio furniture, re-upholstering a very fine wing back chair, and presently re-working/ reupholstering a 1930's barrel chair. All very unique pieces. I can't tell you how pleased I have been. Her keen sense of design as well as meticulous attention to every detail has enabled me to feel secure in her every decision. Jenny is very receptive to client involvement, and will bounce ideas as well as fabric samples until one feels excited and satisfied. Look her up...you will be pleasantly surprised.

Thompson painting (James ) painted a large powder room and bathroom and an accent wall in our master bedroom. In addition he ended up doing extra things like moving some furniture and filling in some cracks around my tub and other problems that we had. I give James the highest recommendation. He is a great painter takes great pride in his work he is kind and trustworthy and we liked him so much we convinced him to have some spaghetti for dinner after a very hard days work. We will definitely call him again as needed and he's even coming back to finish some little odds and ends in our home after the paint dries. Also he was helpful with paint color advise, and goes out of his way to do a good job

My experience with Centerville Design Associates was outstanding! My husband and I were a little apprehensive about using an interior design firm to help remodeling our home. Renee and her staff made it easy and fun! They spent a lot of time with us understanding what we wanted and established a plan within our budget. My house looks awesome, the furniture is stylish and comfortable. We couldn't be happier with the way things turned out. We will be using them again soon!

I had an unusual problem with the drain in my Laundry room backing up at various times when the waste water was exhausted from the washer hose to the drain. It was so bad, we could not leave the washer unattended when washing clothes, for fear the Laundry Room would be flooded from the drain backing up. This has been an ongoing problem for us for about 7 years! Terry Carnes, owner of Carnes Home Remodeling trouble shot the problem and installed a Backflow device into the Laundry drain. We have since washed a load of clothes and the drain did not back up. We are hoping that Terry's installation of the Backflow device has solved our problem once and for all! Terry is an outstanding person, with a great personality and was on time with his appointments. I certainly recommend him and will use hire him again in completing some upccming home projects!

Kristen was professional, punctual, friendly and knowledgable. She was easy to talk to and was very interested in my likes, dislikes and expectations. My main objective was for opinions on a kitchen remodel and for paint color consultation. She arrived on time, ready for questions and with an ample supply of paint chip samples. She offered to have larger paint chips mailed directly to me for further contemplation. Within a couple of hours of leaving my home, she emailed that she had already taken care of this—and even added in a few more possibilities that will work in my home. I highly recommend Kristen’s services and expertise!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
