Rudy has got to be the most professional and kind contractors we have worked with in renovating our kitchen. He measured everything and handled the installation of our lights with precise care. He also is quite affordable for the quality of work - we feel proud of the results we got! He completely listened and provided great expertise in areas we were unsure of. Definitely will continue working with him.

James was the tiler for a home renovation project that we did on a 1920s home in Lincoln Terrace. Project consisted of tiling 2 masters bathrooms, kitchen, bar, powder bath room, rock on fireplace walls, and various accent walls. After our first tiler ran into some legal issues, we were forced to find a replacement. I interviewed 2 other people plus James. Even though James was not the cheapest, I had the most confidence in him and chose to award him the project. Glad I did. James is a professional tiler who does quality work. His overall attitude is refreshing as he works with the customer to ensure he fully understands the requirements and is focused on making the customer happy. James never complained when he had to do some touch up work, he just got it done. Again he wants to make the customer happy. There were a couple of times I needed to call him back... one for example, the shower glass cracked a tile when installing a shower door. James replaced with no questions asked. I would definitely consider James for another project, and would recommend James to anyone.

As a real estate agent I need excellent people I can count on for various projects. Stephen from Blackstone services is the only contractor I will use. His work is top notch and he displays a knowlegde that I have found to be unrivalled! He recently fabricated a support for a lintel over a garage door. My client and I could not be more impressed with the quality of work. If you have a need for a great contractor I recommend Blackstone services. You will be glad you called them.

As a DIYer who started a large remodeling project, I was hesitant to hire a contractor, because I wanted the satisfaction of finishing it myself, I was worried about the cost, and I was nervous about letting someone in my home while I was at the office. From my first meeting with Chris, I had a good feeling about him. He was prompt, professional, and knowledgeable about the work that needed to be performed. Based on these factors and his quoted price, I decided to trust him to finish the work I started. Chris and his crew continued to be prompt, professional, and reliable. He saved me from months of slow DIY progress. I hope to hire him for future projects and would recommend him to others.

Guss was very professional. My issue was a simple project that turned out to be not so simple because my house is a bit older. They don’t make the parts like they used to. However, Guss stayed on it and spent almost the entire day trying to find the proper part for my shower repair, in the end, he found one at a specialty shop and didn’t charge me an arm and a leg for his troubles. I appreciate that he took the time to solve it rather than saying, “This is too hard. We need to demo your shower and install new fixtures.”

Jose and his crew are second to none. I contacted 5 contractors for my master bathroom renovation quote. JLC Renovation (Jose) and his vision blew them away. His crew are pure professionals, friendly, courteous, experienced, and total professionals. Their attention to detail is above and beyond. They took my 1975 era bathroom and turned it into the bathroom of my dreams. Without any hesitation I shall be hiring JLC Renovation for all future projects.

I contacted Advanced Plumbing Specialists Inc about replacing a shower valve in my upstairs bathroom. Lance said he could meet me at my condo within 15 minutes. Once her arrived and assessed the situation, he explained what needed to be done and gave me a quote. It was a very fair price that he quoted. He also had to find the water shut off that connected the 5 condo units. When he did he personally went to the 4 units and explained the water would be off for no more than 1 hr. It was only off less than 30 minutes. No more water dripping from the faucet. And when he presented the invoice, he also gave a military discount of 10 percent! I will be using APSINC for more in the near future. Lance is courteous, knowledgeable, and professional! V/r, Joseph C.

Innovative Construction has done projects on 2 homes for me. Quality work and projects completed in good time frame. Russell Patton first converted a dining room into a 3rd bedroom so my house would sell. When completed the house got 2 offers & sold in 4 days. On my current home he added a roof over the patio floor and looks like the house was built with it. He also built a custom tile shower in Master bedroom. He switched out faucets, light fixtures & added ceilings fans.

Steve is awesome! He has done several projects at my home, my family's home, and where I work. Anything from sheetrock, to painting to building cabinetry. I live in a new home and my new washer and dryer wouldn't fit. He was able to move the cabinetry and you can't even tell! Great work!

After having 8 different remodeling contractors come and give us estimates for our bathroom remodel, unfortunately none of them were within our budget. Then the storms rolled in and our roof started leaking and Ricky with 1st Quality Roofing & Remodeling came by and gave us an estimate for the roof AND an estimate for our bathroom remodel. We struck the. Jackpot with Ricky and his crew. Not only was Ricky at our house everyday during the roofing job but he, himself walked around our property and picked every nail and roofing rack that was on the ground just to insure that none of our children stepped on one or that anyone drove over one. Once they completed the roof, which turned out better than I could have ever requested, he started the process of gutting our bathroom. The bathroom was a full gut job, and they finished it in 1 week. He removed the bathtub and he tiled from the floor to ceiling a new shower with gorgeous mosaic tile detail throughout. He tiled the floor and tiled mosaic tile from floor to ceiling behind the new floating vanity and it looks amazing!! Everything was textured, painted and new base boards were installed, which we didnt expect because we didnt know that was even part of the estimate he quoted. I cannot praise Ricky and his amazing crew enough. I would recommend and WILL recommend him to EVERYONE I know. If you need ANYTHING done with your home, roof, remodel, landscape, deck built, and want it done RIGHT, with a trustworthy contractor AND at an AFFORDABLE price, then look no further because 1st Quality Roofing & Remodeling is the ONLY call you need to make!

We were very happy with them! They worked long and hard and finished our project in one day. When we met with Cesar last week, he knew immediately what could be done and did it! They even took all their trash away. We will use them again on another project. We went through 3 local contractors that took measurements and never came back. Very very impressed! Thank you Cesar and company!!

We hired Jason to put a powder room and utility/indoor laundry room in our house. He did this by building into our (deep) garage, and then cutting a passage way through an interior wall to connect it all together. Throughout the entire process, he was honest, reliable, and often went above and beyond what anyone would expect from a contractor. Whether it was personally going to pick up materials ordered by us for the project, building something I had envisioned (but didn't necessarily want to drop thousands of dollars on purchasing), or going the extra mile like ensuring our garage was cleaned up and our car tire inflated (!!!) before he left on his last day, it was much more like having a good friend helping us out throughout the process instead of just a hired professional. In fact, my husband and I were just joking about how Jason was so great that it almost made us want to just come up with more projects just to keep him around. He is that good, that fair, and we are that happy with the outcome of his work. Having someone in your home when you're not around can be really anxiety inducing, but I never had any doubts about Jason's integrity. He never made us question or regret the trust we put in him, and I wouldn't think twice to bring him into our home again. We absolutely love the finished product, and I truly believe that it would have cost much more to accomplish had we hired anyone else -- not to mention the various "priceless" things he brought to the table. I highly recommend Jason for any project you might need help with, and we look forward to hiring him again in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
