Key Concepts sent two crew members to our home and they cleaned the yard up, raked, edged, trimmed and weeded the yard. They also removed a lot of debris from a garden recently rototilled under. We have hired them for bi-monthly yard maintenance and look forward to working with them in the future. The crew was friendly and very eager to take care of a few requests. I would recommend Key Concepts Landscape Maintenance to friends and family.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Anderson Landscape Maintenance. They have been out to our house a few times already taking down trees and cleaning up our landscape. We were renting the house for seven years and the yard was sorely neglected. We are now waiting for fall to do the designing with plants, and shrubs. We will also have them continue with tree trimming as we can afford it.

Omar & his team did a phenomenal job with our acre. Half of it is very landscaped and with the demands of work and all the over growth they managed to whip it right back into shape. They were very cautious with our flowers, gardens, and fruit trees- they ensured to spray what needed and pulled what they couldn't. Worth every penny and I would recommend them to EVERYONE!!

We have been extremely happy with all of Creekscape's work. We saw them working in our daughter's neighborhood and asked for quotes and ideas. Juan used only our basic concepts or desired results and told us what he could do, how he would do it and the final costs. We are now signed up for our third major landscape project on two different properties. The results have exceeded our expectations. When we had concerns about costs, Juan made recommendations that accomplished more than we were looking for at a better price. Our work has included significant demolition of old railroad tie walls, decking, drainage piping, removal of bad slopes that caused flooding. Then, new pavers, significant wall construction, stairways, boulder placement, leveling and large sod work. Again, now were having Juan and his crew back for additional work, expanding areas. They were all extremely careful of adjoining work and features that we wanted to retain, careful of existing underground drainage and supply piping. They included the haul away of debris, clean up all complete turn key projects, within our agreed to budget and schedule. Juan's management of our complex projects included coordination with paver suppliers, boulder suppliers, clean fill dirt, sod and large earth moving equipment delivery and pickup. Everything seemed to show up just at the right time for the next phase of work. We highly recommend Juan Gutierrez's Creekscape Design for any landscape, patio, decking projects. We've engaged them 3 times now and would do again in the future.

I own rental properties in PDX and have used a number of tree trimming services over the years. Green Scape Landscaping is the best and most responsive company I have used to date. The owner, Ed Harris, is very detail oriented and is very concerned that he listens to what the customer wants, and gives the customer satisfaction. He is knowledgeable and will offer professional advice when warranted, but will defer to your wishes so long as you understand what it is you are asking for. Ed remains in communication with you throughout the process. He follows up, also. His crew is fast, thorough, cheerful, and prompt. They are careful to be non-disruptive (especially important to me because of tenants). I will use them again and I recommend them to anyone who needs tree service. I would further infer that their other services (scheduled maintenance, etc.) are equally professional.

I could not be happier with the job Rise Solutions did on installing my new sod. They were professional, easy to talk to and work with, efficient, knowledgeable and reasonably priced. I also appreciate that their company is environmentally conscious, not using any harmful chemicals that could potentially harm pets. I would highly recommend hiring Rise Solutions for your next landscaping project!

Roberto’s landscape & Maintenance did an excellent job on my yard. I was very pleased with the outcome; they went above and beyond my expectations. I definitely recommend Roberto’s Landscape & Maintenance to anyone. They will get the job done, and the pricing is very fair. I was so impressed I hired them to do weekly maintenance on my yard. My neighbors were very impressed as well and asked for his contact information; now he is doing most of our streets yards.

I reached out on here for a landscapers ho could do landscape clearing and preparation for a home that we were putting on the market to lease out. As a property management company we understand first impressions determine quite a lot. I received 2 landscapers who reached out and ultimately chose 7days Lawn Care Maintenance. We could go on and on about how great Enrique was in communicating with us, showing up for schedule appointments, his value, his personality and grasp of the vision we had for the property and much more. We have found a long term partner in landscaping. A company we can trust and go to when we need our owners homes to get an extra touch of spruce up. Thanks Enrique for your stewardship, integrity and how hard you worked. Picture tell a thousand words.

Squirrel Landscape were professional, and new exactly what was wrong with my sprinkler system. They came as soon as I called to access the situation at no charge and finished the work in the next few days. Where as the other company I called wanted 89$ just to look at the problem and could not come out for 10 days. I would definitely use Squirrel Landscape again

My grass had not been mowed for a while. It was long and wet from the rain. Marco came out and gave me a fair quote. He mowed the grass and evened out the long and short parts. He edged it and made it look great for when my grand kids came over to visit. I would hire him again for all my lawn and landscape work.

Jose did a great great job. I still get sticker shock for what people pay for lawn and garden work here in Portland but Jose came in about the same as others. However, he really knows what he is doing, he's fast, and he communicates very well. He called to confirm he was coming. He's great and I plan to call on him again.

Pedro came out to give me a bid and was so friendly, professional and stayed true to his quote (unlike many other landscapers). He and his friend Jorge did fantastic work, mowing down a difficult hillside in one day (it takes a team of 2-3 guys 2 days usually) and also mowing a pasture area that was getting out of control. I would definitely recommend Pedro, he does excellent work at an affordable price.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
