About
In business under the same ownership since 1983, we are a retailer of new & used pianos, organs and keyboards and move 40-50 pianos per month. We use clean, up to date equipment, backed by a moving staff that is not only experienced, but also have a special affinity towards what they are moving as they are musicians themselves. We show up on time (+/- 30 minutes usually due to traffic delays), and are prompt and careful with every instrument move.
The owner of NW Piano Gallery, Don Thumel, has played since he was 4 years old and has been involved with virtually every aspect of the piano music business. Because providing your own instrument is required for performance at the entry level, in addition to being able to play the instrument, Don was often required to get instruments to performance venues himself. Nowadays, rather than spending days just sitting in an office chair, the art of piano moving has become a pleasant distraction from the day to day nature of retail. Many times it's also a challenging endeavor that requires considerable thought (in addition to strength) to figure out just how you're going to get an extremely heavy object not only onto a dolly, but down stairs, a barked bank, a wet lawn, etc. Not bad exercise either . . . if you're into isometrics!

I lucked out with the timing and the piano delivery went smoothly. I bought a piano one day and it was delivered the next. It doesn't get more efficient than that.

Don was fast and careful with the pianomove. I can't think of a single thing they could have done better. Friendly, polite and punctual service. I highly recommend them.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
We have a standard base for upright pianos up to 48", upright grands, grand pianos up to 5' 10", grands 5' 11"+, etc. The rates are based on a 25 mile driving radius. Additional charges are for excessive additional mileage and use of additional equipment (ramps, grass boards, sleds, winches, etc.) as well as additional manpower. We do not work on an hourly so we do not purposely work slow or perform work that is not needed, but only done to add to the time (e.g., you do not need to plastic wrap a piano for a local home-to-home move when being singly in a truck).
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
To make sure that we have all details correct regarding the move, we prefer to be able to speak with our clients directly prior to showing up for a move. Our quotes are based on the information provided by a customer, and when the actual characteristics of the move are not as described, additional charges may be incurred for use of ramps, etc. In addition, if we are not clear about the requirements of a move, on occasion we have found that we did not arrive properly prepared with the equipment needed or number of personnel required and had to delay the job.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Continually moving pianos professionally since 1983.
