Very pleased with the work. During the estimating process it became clear Josh is knowledgeable and sees the little details. He found a couple of subtle but important issues I had missed in assessing the project (one from a previous contractors work). Josh and his crew are friendly, efficient and cleaned up afterwards. Our project came out better than our expectations. The tile work is excellent and they even found a very close match for a decade old tile to make a repair. They also matched the paint color for a little touch up on the walls and ceiling as well. We will use them again.

When you feel comfortable enough to immediately start cracking jokes and trading stories with your contractor you know it's going to be a great experience. Glenn is easy going, knowledgeable, trustworthy and an all around friendly guy. He completed my work needed and went above and beyond the call of duty. I would definitely recommend Glenn for any of your future project needs!

I've worked with a dozen contractors over the last year on an extensive home remodel and the best experience I've had, by far, has been with Zeev. His motivation is 100% to create a finished product that I will be proud of and he did so in the process of executing an extremely complex electrical plan. I could not recommend Zeev highly enough.

I was so lucky to find Edward! It started out with one job [remove & replace sink, disposal, dishwasher for counter top replacement] and it unexpectedly turned into several other projects as I was getting the home ready for new tenants -- to include painting, when the other contractor failed to follow-up, change out of electrical switches, window screens, smoke alarms, change out of shower kit, etc. Edward was patient, good-natured, reliable, and proficient. He's a well rounded maintenance man & I highly recommend him.

A&C Innovative Contractors replaced our existing backyard cedar fence in West LInn. The quality of work was excellent and the crew worked quickly and kept to the schedule in spite of finding large rocks and concrete where the post holes were dug . They also made an attractive arbor over the gate which adds a highlight to the project. This was all done for a very competitive price. We intend to call on A&C Innovative Contractors for further work in the future.

Daniel hung 4 doors, ran all the baseboard trim, windows trim and trimmed out 3 closets for me. Additionally, he filled, caulked and painted all the trim and painted the trim and doors. Three of the doors and jambs needed to be altered so it was no easy job. He also filled, primed and painted the risers on my fir stairs. His bid was extremely reasonable and his start date was exactly when I needed it. Daniel is polite, clean, professional, on time and on budget. He worked long hours and was really flexible while I was lining up floor refinishing. Really, he is a great guy and his work is high quality. Daniel was a pleasure to work with and communicate with. He is prompt on returning messages. I wish all the contractors I used were as good as Daniel. The work he did for me was on a rental and I will be using him to hang some exterior doors, run trim and pain at the house I live in. I showed his work to a few neighbors and they want his number now. It was a pleasure to work with Daniel and I will be using him for all my carpentry needs. He is highly recommended for any of your remodeling needs.

Logan by far is one of the most honest, conscientious contractors I have ever worked with. All his positive reviews are true!!! My boat steel cover enclosure was damaged due to heavy winds near the gorge and I decided to has something custom made. Logan came out the very next day to look at the project. He knew exactly what I was looking for to protect my boat. We had an issue with the fence gate needing to be removed and made wider... and Logan is modifying the gate for me as well. The very next day Logan ordered the materials at Home Depot, and two days later my project was on its way. I work out of town during the week, so I entrusted Logan to do what he thought was best. He updated me with photos everyday, and when I came home today to see the project... it was beyond my expectations. Being a dentist, attention to details are very important to me... and logan's craftsmanship is superior. His rate was very competitive, and very fare, but most importantly.... his honesty and integrity the first day he came to look at my project ..... shows in the finished project. I was so impressed, that Logan will be building my son's custom tree house in the future !!! Great Job Logan!!!! Joe

As a general contractor I had worked with many teams during the last 15 years - it is hard to find a team like Oscar Tile LLC. The terms are a critical in our job, it is very frustrating when a team is dropping you down. Oscar Tile LLC are the one to really on. They do what they promise. There are not too many companies which I can recommend without reserves - Oscar Tile LLCis the one of those.

We have been waiting for 3 weeks to get pad pouredfrom other contractors I contacted Makaia and he responded and poured my pad in the same week. He was a very professional guy. He showed up when he said he was going to and done a excellent job on our concrete patio that we had poured. The price was very reasonable and I would recommend him and if I need more work done in the future I will go with his team. Happy customer in Ridgfield!!!!

Paul/Home Run Construction are a HOME RUN...make it a GRAND SLAM! So professional and easy to work with and outstanding communication throughout the project. Paul takes pride in his work and he completed my project timely and on budget. As an attorney I see clients and cases with all kinds of flakey contractors who run over budget and do shoddy work. Paul is NOT one of those! Solid and good man who does excellent work! I can say without hesitation that I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Paul and Home Run Construction and will continue to look to him for future projects.

Joe De Marco landed in my life via Thumbtack, and what an amazing stroke of luck that was! I’d been debating making an offer on a house for sale, but it was going to need extensive remodeling before I could move in. And without knowing what was possible, or what the renovations might cost, I wasn’t sure what to offer on the house itself or if I could even afford everything I had in mind. Though I’ve owned two, I really know almost *nothing* about houses--and less about the actual work that contractors do. I was an easy mark, in other words, and Joe could have taken me right to the cleaners! Instead, at a time when other local contractors can’t even be bothered to answer their phone, Joe De Marco got back to me right away, spent 90 minutes at the house with me explaining every single detail, and had an estimate for me within 24 hours! And I didn’t even own the house, which means Joe did all that work pro bono. He came up with creative and affordable solutions to every problem I threw his way, and taught me an awful lot in the process. Ultimately, I decided not to buy the house, in large part because of what I learned through Joe. He could have lied to me and taken my life’s savings, and I’d have been none the wiser. But instead, he was honest and patient and down-to-earth, the kind of guy I know I can *trust*. And when I do find the right house, you can bet that Joe will be the first person--the only person--I call to help me with whatever work it might need. Diana Schutz Portland, Oregon

The fellows from RM BIRD were fantastic! They listened to my needs, worked with my meager budget to remove mold & re-tile a tub/shower stall, were very responsive in starting the project & finished with great efficiency. There was a slight issue with the grout settling & leaving a couple of small holes, so I called Steve. He came out the next day after his regular work day was done to repair it. I was impressed by that bit of professionalism. It was my first time hiring a contractor; it won't be the last time hiring RM BIRD. Thanks guys!

We got a couple quotes and Jose gave an extremely competitive price and estimated less than the time frame of other contractors. In the end, he spent 3 days on the project, which was skim coating the ceilings in three rooms. He took great care with our property and furniture, and he checked in with us throughout the project to make sure we were satisfied. Overall, Jose was communicative, honest, and skilled. We would recommend him.

Our kitchen was gutted due to a flood, and we chose Kitchen Concepts to redo it for us based on meeting with Dave Warren and several recommendations from other contractors and customers. Dave designed our new layout, and we purchased our cabinets, sink, and granite countertops from him. Installation was done in a reasonable timeframe and though there were several small problems that cropped up, Dave and his subs resolved each as quickly as possible and we were quite satisfied! The new layout works beautifully for us, and the finished work is stunning! Dave knows his business, we love our new kitchen, and we would happily work with Dave again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
