When I hired Sharon Hocking to come in and do a complete Interior Design of our Living and Dinning Rooms I had no idea just how wonderful this experience would be. Sharon was excellent to work with and listened to all of my concerns, ideas and suggestions. She was very communicative and prompt when we would set up meetings. Her attention to detail is beyond anything else I could have done on my own. Because I still work full time Sharon was able to do all of the leg work and then some. The next time I get ready to do some more decorating in my home Sharon will be the first and only Interior Designer that I will hire.

I feel so fortunate to work with Tamauflage for my design and plant curation needs. Her attention to detail, space, aesthetics, texture, and my personality has made my home feel more like the home I've always dreamed of living in. There's no way I could have created such an inviting space on my own. At this point, I share an idea with her and then give her total creative license to implement the design. She asks great clarifying questions along the way, but ultimately, I trust her recommendations - she always come through. Five stars.

Christina has helped us on two different occasions. She helped us design our basement remodel as well as an outdoor fire pit area. Both times she listened to our ideas/desires and created a few different designs to give us multiple ideas. She's great to work with and will certainly be a part of any future home projects!

Pangaea really knows her stuff. She has a great eye and has educated herself to amazing extent on the many things that are available to you. The contractors that she uses are great. I spent more money than I ever thought I would on some dressers, night stands, and built-ins, but, wow, were they worth it. I love them everyday. The AV guys, the general contractor, the window coverings/art installer - you hire Pangaea you get her vision to turn your house into a home and you get this terrific team. I'm keeping all their phone numbers! Very kind, attentive people, who are complete professionals. Pangaea can work with your budget, too. I called several design teams in Portland and told them what I would like to spend, and was told "well, that's not going to be possible." Bull. I did go over budget, but that's because I wanted to, not because it wasn't possible to do it with the amount allotted. Two things I would say that you should expect from the experience if you've never hired a decorator before. a) It will take a long time. It just will. It took 11 months to finish my home. It begins to wear on you, just be prepared. b) You will hemorrhage money. Expect it. Just be prepared to deal with it and if it gets too much, feel free to say 'no'. There were things which were proposed for the master bedroom that I just did think would equate to an equivalent amount of utility and Pangaea said, "okay". In the end, it was a long journey, I'm glad its over, but my family and I really enjoy what we have and it finally feels like 'our' home. Good Luck.

Estelaz Interior Designed redecorated my kitchen, living and dining room. I consider myself skeptical and hard to please as I’m myself a perfectionist however, after sitting with her for the first 15 minutes I recognized she knew what she was doing to the point that I trusted her enough to pick the curtains for the dining room! It seemed she understood exactly what we liked! Gentle, not pushy at all and moreover, very patient and calm to deal with my wife and I who are very hard to arrive to a middle point without fussing when it’s about moving things around the house. Ivonne did not give up on us, but rather knew how to use and combine our different approaches, rapidly grasping on our family style and functionality needs to create the perfect climate for our home. One of her first questions was, “how do you want to feel when you step in to the kitchen”, I never thought feelings would have such an important account in decoration. Very professional, great touch and impeccable finish. I only have good things to say about Estelaz Interior Design work.

Working with Jay was an excellent experience, from start to finish. Jay called us to discuss what we liked and didn't like in terms of design before we even moved to Portland, so he was able to get right on the project as soon as we arrived. Once he knew our likes and dislikes, he came to view and measure the space he had to work with. Then he toured and helped us shop at many stores that were within our budget, and helped design and put together a wonderful apartment! His eye for design, detail, texture, and color is amazing! Using our feedback and input, he was able to integrate furniture or decorative items, while maintaining a high level of taste as well as function. The entire space is thoughtfully put together, comfortable, and custom. Our favorite piece was one he worked on himself- a 1950s wooden desk he transformed into a gorgeous mid-century modern entertainment center. We now have a one-of-a-kind piece that was made with our budget in mind. Jay's enthusiasm for his work was evident in his commitment to the project. His communication was always thorough and reliable. We really appreciated that he respected our budget and never pushed for items that didn't make sense in our apartment. We weren't sure what to expect from working with an interior designer, but Jay made the experience interesting and fun! We could not have been happier with the entire process, thanks to Jetset Designs.

Indah was prompt, courteous and receptive to my ideas. We have not yet commenced the project and are still in the planning phase. It has been easy to communicate with her via email or phone. She has good ideas and I am looking forward to seeing the final result.

      About

I am an Atlanta based interior designer. I specialize in space planning, home renovations, color palette selection, furniture restoration, furnishings selections, and home staging. I work with clients to create their best environment within their budget.

      About

Everyone has their own tastes and ideas about styles, including me. However, my job is to provide my clients with spaces that they love. This means that I will not push my personal preferences on a client.

      About

In 2007, I graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design and two years later, I earned my AKBD (Associate Kitchen & Bath Designer) certificate through the National Kitchen and Bath Association. I have worked the full spectrum of design including at several design/build firms on high end kitchen/baths and whole house remodels to smaller family-run construction companies with a focus on work where budget is paramount. In this industry, I have found that building relationships, networking with vendors, and focusing on quality long-term partners can generate the best bridges for life. My passion for interior design started when I was young, helping my uncle, a local contractor/home builder on job sites, analyzing the architectural plans, visiting product showrooms, and assisting with material choices. I loved the client interaction and creative expression interior design allowed. Plus, what a fun career! Working with homeowners to create beautiful interiors where they can feel comfortable and joyful is an exhilarating challenge I look forward to every day. My approach to design involves a very collaborative open communication between designer and client. To truly design the space, I need to know a few things about how you live. For example, how many people will be living in the home, how many pets, and low maintenance or green material preferences. As a designer, I can envision how simple, out-of-the-box solutions to problems in our environments can truly change the functionality of how we live. My personal style is transitional, however, I spend a lot of time upfront listening to my client's needs and wants before evaluating what style would be the best fit their lifestyle. I am very energized and encouraged for a great year after attending the 2014 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) and International Builders Show (IBS) in Vegas and eager to work on your project! Let me know how I can help you with your home! Key interior design tasks are as follows: * In-home client consultations * Auto CAD floor plans, elevations and renders * Putting together color palettes * Specifying materials and writing construction documents * Space layout and 20/20 cabinetry design * Furniture and window treatment selections * Individualized project budgeting and pricing * Design retainer payment structure

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
