I have worked with Jen for over 10 years. She has designed, sewed and installed blinds, curtains, and cushions for me. She has helped me with projects that were more complex such as creating a sunbrella cover for a tennis shed and designing a window cover for a very large and strangely shaped bay window. She is creative, detail oriented, and responsive to my needs and style. She finishes her jobs on time, on budget and is reasonably priced. She has a great eye for style and color. And the final product is always beautifully done. I love working with Jen and I love the work that she does!

We pre-arranged to meet Marlene before we moved from Los Angeles to Vancouver, Washington. We got her name from Angie's List and she was the first person we met at our new home. My wife and I just retired and we wanted to make our new home all ours and needed help to arrange the space with color and furniture that would fit in the open area of our living room and kitchen area. Marlene met with us the first time for two hours and rescheduled to visit with us a week later to go over her ideas. At that re-visit she showed us many detailed drawings of options to utilize the space and asked us for our input to pick which plan we liked the best. My wife and I were surprised with the drawings, which were done to scale and she also brought color samples that she thought would go with the interior of the house, which the previous owner had put in wood molding throughout and had a checkerboard black and white kitchen floor that I thought might cause a problem, but after she showed us many options the next step was to meet her at a furniture store to pick out what she had planed for us. She e-mailed us that she had visited a store and was excited about the variety of selection they had. We met her a few days later and after 2 hours she had picked out the furniture, the color of the fabrics and before we knew it we were done. This is the first time we have used an interior decorator and I must commend her on a job well done. If not for her consulting we probably would have purchased more than we needed and the colors would have been, well I really don't wish to think what it would have looked like. Marlene has an artist eye and skill for the placement of objects in the space given.

Kathryn James of Bluevine Studio exceeded my expectations as a creative force and motivator for a change of my cluttered office environment on our first project. I did not know how or where to begin regarding the design, functionality and rebuild of my business venue. She presented several options for my review and clearly explained her process, which alleviated any of my concerns regarding the cost and completion time frame. I now understand why she is referred to as the tornado of organization. I additionally hired Kat James for a complete renovation of my teen-agers upgrade from a little girl’s cave into a full master size suite. With just a rough budget in mind I gave creative license to Kathryn. What impressed me the most was the way she intuitively connected with my daughter and empowered and guided her to choices along the process that resulted in a highly personalized space. The room ended up not only reflecting my daughter’s personality and comforts but also a very cool mix of sophistication, function and fun! I have used Kat on three separate projects including a master suite and kitchen upgrade, a living room modernization, art work and color consulting, and wall / window treatments. She amazed me with her well-rounded knowledge of design and construction on each occasion. Kat James also provided me with a choice of contingent options for every project. I was very fortunate to discover a one-stop shop for both an innovative designer and general contractor where her concept wasn't lost in translation between an idea and the lay of a brick. Kat shopped for eco products with cost efficiency and creative solutions in mind. I requested the use of sustainable products when available and practical and Kat provided me with several local suppliers to visit and help me with my selection. Kat somehow arranged a behind the scenes tour of a very promiment green facility in Portland where I saw first hand how renovations and replicas where crafted. I had the opportunity of experiencing Kat and her crew in action as they worked at the Heathman Hotel in Portland. Kat navigated her creations and equipment quietly through the four star gem and I saw the complexity and realized what a challenge that project presented for Kat. Her crew worked around guests and her crew presented a very professional demeanor. I saw Kat interact with her crew, subcontractors, hotel management and occassionally likened it to herding cats. I will definitely call upon Kat (BlueVine Studio) and her crew for my next project. Bryan Meyer

I would have never thought to find a designer of Andrea's caliber on Thumbtack. Her portfolio and credentials are incredible. When I saw her quote, I thought, that maybe, at most, she'd do a basic design such as picking out colors and finishes etc. The value received per price paid was mind blowing! Complete CAD drawings, spec sheets, materials/finishes and more. She is also extremely savvy at finding stylish, and affordable stuff online. It never felt as if she was doing the consultation remotely. I gave her the dimensions of the space, my vision, limited budget, and she took it from there. We exchanged emails and also a few Skype calls. All of the files were properly organized in a Dropbox folder. It was nice to be able to access the files at the site from my phone. The final product looks AMAZING!! I can go on and on about how great she is at Design. Do not hesitate to hire her. You'll thank me later.

I hired Elephant in the Room Design to be my Wardrobe Consultants, to help me build a wardrobe that reflected my personality and get a good sense of what clothes go together. The owners, Morgan and Lex, were very communicative. They were prepared with quotes, detailed descriptions of their services, and they talked me through their process. The consultation was laid back and fun, and I felt like I was heard, especially in regards to designs and clothes to stay away from. During the shopping experience, they were supportive and did not pressure me to buy anything I was not 100% sure about. I am a very picky person, so I didn't wind up buying a whole lot, but Morgan and Lex gave me some good online resources, a shopping list, the beginnings of a lookbook that will get bigger as I gain more clothes, and the promise to stay in touch and guide me as I piece together my wardrobe. Overall, a really enjoyable experience!

Leslie helped us divert diasaster not once, not twice, not three - but FOUR times. First, she helped us with the color of the exterior of our home. Then when my husband build a big pergola off the deck, Leslie corrected the awful mistake I was about to make by telling us exactly what to paint the columns and beams. Thank goodness we asked her! Then I asked for Leslie's help in choosing wall colors for our loft condo. It looks fabulous! Lastly, Leslie helped me with a completely new color scheme for our suburban home. Gone are the gold walls and oak. The family room and kitchen now look fresh and contemporary with greys and whites. We LOVE it and so does everyone else who comes to our home. We paint NOTHING without asking Leslie. Her services are very reasonable. She is efficient and personable. I recommend her design services without reservation!

Estelaz Interior Designed redecorated my kitchen, living and dining room. I consider myself skeptical and hard to please as I’m myself a perfectionist however, after sitting with her for the first 15 minutes I recognized she knew what she was doing to the point that I trusted her enough to pick the curtains for the dining room! It seemed she understood exactly what we liked! Gentle, not pushy at all and moreover, very patient and calm to deal with my wife and I who are very hard to arrive to a middle point without fussing when it’s about moving things around the house. Ivonne did not give up on us, but rather knew how to use and combine our different approaches, rapidly grasping on our family style and functionality needs to create the perfect climate for our home. One of her first questions was, “how do you want to feel when you step in to the kitchen”, I never thought feelings would have such an important account in decoration. Very professional, great touch and impeccable finish. I only have good things to say about Estelaz Interior Design work.

I ordered a custom glass mosaic mural for my kitchen from Lisa Bustamante and am so thrilled with the results! It is 43 square feet and the theme is underwater. She created fish, seaweed, sea horses, sand dollars, crabs, a lobster, and about any other sea creature you can name. She used 4 colors of glass for the water which looks like it is flowing. Dichroic glass was used for many of the creatures which radiate different hues as I move and look at each creature. The centerpiece is a mermaid made of dichroic glass. She is very gifted as an artist with the ability to manifest my dreams. She has very high standards and refused to stop working on it until it was perfect in her eyes. I can recommend her highly to anyone wanting a unique custom mosaic piece of art.

Working with Jay was an excellent experience, from start to finish. Jay called us to discuss what we liked and didn't like in terms of design before we even moved to Portland, so he was able to get right on the project as soon as we arrived. Once he knew our likes and dislikes, he came to view and measure the space he had to work with. Then he toured and helped us shop at many stores that were within our budget, and helped design and put together a wonderful apartment! His eye for design, detail, texture, and color is amazing! Using our feedback and input, he was able to integrate furniture or decorative items, while maintaining a high level of taste as well as function. The entire space is thoughtfully put together, comfortable, and custom. Our favorite piece was one he worked on himself- a 1950s wooden desk he transformed into a gorgeous mid-century modern entertainment center. We now have a one-of-a-kind piece that was made with our budget in mind. Jay's enthusiasm for his work was evident in his commitment to the project. His communication was always thorough and reliable. We really appreciated that he respected our budget and never pushed for items that didn't make sense in our apartment. We weren't sure what to expect from working with an interior designer, but Jay made the experience interesting and fun! We could not have been happier with the entire process, thanks to Jetset Designs.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

        • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
        • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
        • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
        • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

        • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
        • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
        • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
        • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
