Everything went well. The movers were on time and careful with our things. The job took one hour, about what I thought it would. There is a three hour minimum so we paid a bit more but it was worth it.

Nick and his partner Ken deserve an award for the most patience ever shown to a couple of beyond-frazzled individuals during the course of their move! Nick went above and beyond all our expectations in safely transporting our furniture to our final destination. He and Ken were incredibly professional in their handling and wrapping our furniture and it’s placement on the truck. The pick-up and loading went far longer than it should have due to my tardiness in being fully prepared on the day of the move. Some movers would likely have grown impatient with me, and rightly so. But not Nick and Ken. They did everything possible to ease my tension and took extra breaks just to allow me the extra time I needed. My husband and I have moved countless times over the years. (That’s perhaps why I get so frazzled — it’s started to wear on me!). And in all those years, through good and bad moves, my husband and I have never encountered a nicer or more decent pair of movers than Nick and Ken. In an industry that gets so many bad reviews and horror stories, this company really stands out. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Nick and his crew to anyone looking for an exceptional professional move. You simply won’t find anyone better.

Great that I was able to quickly hire two movers in a short amount of time. They were quick and didn't stand around to contemplate how they were going to pack everything. They hustled and got it done quickly. The only improvement I would suggest is to do a final walk through with the mover. I was leaving a few things behind and a couple very heavy items were left behind. I will have to hire another labor to move them out of th@fszizzle Your body cannot withstand deep water aerobics? I don't know enough about fibromyalgia. But I do have several friends that have the diagnosis and have been through so much because of it. I deeply feel for anyone that has to withstand and endure e car.

I moved in to an upstairs 1 bedroom apartment from a ground floor 1 bedroom. I have a lot of stuff and the guys were friendly, efficient, and easy to work with. I was told there would be 3 guys with a 2-3 hour time estimate, but was a little frustrated when only 2 guys showed up and it took them 3 1/2 hours to complete the job. Overall, it was a good experience and I would hire them again. I would just make sure to verify number of movers and time frame expected prior to moving day.

The QAR team had four team members helping my dad and me to move out of two adjacent apartments. It was a huge job, requiring two trips and almost 12 hours of work. They worked extremely hard and I couldn't ask for anyone to do more. Bit of advice though, to save money, hire someone to help pack a couple of days before so that your movers only have to grab-n-go. Thanks Sergio!

Wow! The best movers I have ever hired! I am in the Real state business, I have hired a dozen or more of labor movers in the last year. PNW MOVING is the best! I highly recommend them. They were on time, fast, safe, and very professional! Josh & Roy were so kind. And so understanding, they picked up my piano like it wieghed nothing. They packed my whole house under 5 hours. I told them I had a 8 hour budget, and they surpised me so much! They saved me money and time, I even took the guise out tk eat after wards! They loaded the truck so well and professional, everything was wrapped, tied down, safety moved. I actually hired then again a few days later for a move for my client, this time I hired 6 PNW Moving guiee and wow. They are so amazing. A++++++++ all the way.

Our experience with Pro1Movers was AMAZING. I have had bad moves in the past and was nervous due to a few negative reviews. We tried to start our move day as prepared as possible, and everything went perfect! The movers came a little later than scheduled, but had confirmed earlier in the day, so we weren't nervous. They moved everything onto the truck without issue and arrived at our new residence shortly after we did. The two movers were polite and friendly and moved all our belongings using a freight elevator without incident. The price was exactly as quoted, which was well below any other quotes we had seen. Great experience! Will definitely recommend.

We found Clear Choice movers from Thumbtack. They quoted us a great hourly rate, showed up on time, and worked hard the entire move. Two movers were able to move our two bedroom townhome wrap up our large items, disassemble a bed frame, load it all up, and get everything off and reassembled in 5 hours. Clear Choice movers are the only movers I’ve used that actually had roll out mats to cover our carpet and floors to keep them from getting dirty. They did a fantastic job and everything arrived intact and was placed in the appropriate rooms. If I ever have to move again, I’d definitely use them.

This was my very first time hiring a moving company, and I don't think it could have been any more perfect. Nick was responsive with my requests, upfront with all of the fees, and was able to easily reschedule my appointment when I had something come up. The movers arrived on time, were very careful with my items, and were both very hardworking, sincere gentlemen. I will absolutely hire again, and have already told friends about my great experience. Thank you Summit!

Mike and his team were absolutely awesome! They arrived on time and worked the entire day for me. They wrapped all of my furniture with blankets, protected my floors with red carpet and even had these special door pads to cover our front door! They were extremely effiecient and worked in the blazing heat! My overall experience was just amazing. They’re very affordable for the work they do. My last move, I paid double the price per hour and the movers weren’t even half as good. I’ll defiantly be using this crew again if I ever plan on moving in the future.

They were extremely careful with our furniture and other items. I would recommend Oregon Trail Moving Services to anyone wanting a professional group of movers, at a value price!

I hired Antonio and his team twice. First, to help me pack my 1 bedroom apartment, a week before my move. At that time I already had movers lined up for the following weekend. They did such a great job that I hired them to to do my move! He was prepared with supplies I didn't have, really professional and efficient and just generally very pleasant to work with! I have a lot of stuff... and very specific directions on what goes where, and they moved it really quickly and accommodated my requests. I will definitely hire Antonio and his team for my next move and would recommend him to anyone.

It was a simple moving job. The movers were okay not the best but again you get what you pay for. West Coast Moving are hands down the best movers but they are twice as expensive too. The only thing I wasn't happy about is the main guy kept saying he has used some of his boxes but he was not going to charge us for it as if he was doing us a favor. But in reality we packed everything and every single box was ours. The guy repeated this statement at least 3 times. At the end when he was writing the invoice he said the same thing and to top that he showed me a list of things tapes etc and said that he had used 60 but was only going to charge us for 40. Based on the boxes experience I knew I could not trust this statement. Being honest is big for me. I still gave them a tip as we moved in winter and it was cold when these guys were moving furniture.

Mathew and his wife worked with us on moving dates multiple times since we were not sure when we were moving. This is the second time I have used them and on both occasions they have been excellent-nothing broken, worked with us on locating our stuff to the right place-very professional and affordable.

Without a doubt this move was the most difficult in our life. The reasons are too numerous to mention, but much of it was because of the desire to downsize and simplify. And doing that is a painful process. We have crammed tons of furniture into an old family farm house. We think O'Neill Transfer and Storage did an incredible job. We are very happy we chose them from a number of companies. Their moving crew, especially the two Mikes, went well beyond the extra miles. They were very polite, alway had a "can do" attitude, and we're very careful and respectful of our stuff, including irreplaceable precious antiques. We cannot give enough kudos to these two Mikes. Thank you to the two Bradleys and the two Mikes!

The movers at AmerApex Moving could not have done a better job moving our belongings over 2,000 miles away. The crew was on time, polite, very careful, and kept the move fun and in good spirits. Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
