While I was doing photography at Welcome week for 2 Colleges, I observed Sam Bones, a Henna artist and Face painter. Sam is artistic, quick, efficient, and super friendly with the students. The way she applies her intricate designs is totally amazing. She is very knowledgeable about her craft and the students loved her designs, especially with the free glitter. I definitely recommend Sam Bones and Glitter Ruby's Face painting. She is well worth hiring for your events. Images Photography by Jerry Block

My first experience with Hennatopia was when I purchased an "artist's choice" henna design at a fair. I couldn't have been happier with the beautiful art she created. The quality of the henna used was very good, and lasted much longer than I've experienced from other henna artists in the past. My second experience was at an intro to henna class she conducted, which was a ton of fun and incredibly informative. I can't say enough good things!

I highly recommend Madhavi to do your henna because she is creative. She can provide a customized design or you can show her something that you'd like and she's able to recreate it. My henna tattoos have lasted up to 2 weeks and I've received compliments on them.

After reviewing multiple airbrush artists I happen to find Vince and Couture Airbrush. I was turning 50 this past Halloween and had a very large Halloween party for which I was the guest of honor. I knew my costume had to be above and beyond everybody else's. I passed an idea of what I wanted by Vince, Vince not only made it happen he used his artistic talents and creativity to make it phenomenal. Hats off to a man who made sure my special day was perfect not only by his designs but by the fact he drove an hour and a half out of his way to make sure I was taken care of. I would highly recommend Vince to anybody looking for an incredible airbrush artist. Troy B

Ana did a beautiful henna design on my 3rd trimester belly and sent me the photos as a keepsake. She came to my house and patiently took as much time as needed to help me decide on a design and make it look perfect. That was no small feet since I was rather indecisive and finicky as this was my first henna design on my first pregnant belly. She is also pet friendly, my dog and cats generally annoy anyone who comes to my home but Ana was patient and affectionate with them.

After studying abroad for a year in India I learned traditional mehndi (henna) and practiced at weddings in Gujarat, India! I love to be able to continue spreading Indian traditions and being able to talk about my experience with my customers. Mehndi (henna) is something that was really engaging and something that I could connect to and really appreciate while I was in India.

I do mother-to-be belly designs, baby showers, birthday parties, corporate events, adult parties, promotions/premiere launches, company fun days, trade fairs, school fairs and events, and fashion shows and shoots. I would love to add a creative touch to your event. I mix my own henna and use 100% natural ingredients. I never use black henna or chemicals.

I love custom and fusion work. It's not often that you will see a henna artist specialize in so many styles and be able to incorporate them flawlessly. All the awesome clients I meet. Mehndi is something I love and doing it as a profession makes it even more fun.

Because the needs of my clients come first. Having a strong background in art allows me to clearly communicate what will make the design flow & look the best it can be without being pushy or inconsiderate of my clients ideas. I work with people one step at a time & make sure that the whole experience of being tattooed is a positive one. All the cool & creative people I met, their awesome art, ideas and being a part of it all.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.

How much does it cost to get a henna tattoo?

Nationally, the average cost to hire a henna artist is between $100 and $180 per hour. Rates will vary by location and the experience of the individual henna artist; it’s possible to find artists who charge less than $50 per hour. Some henna artists charge an hourly rate, especially for corporate events or festivals where they are providing service to multiple people within an hour. They may also charge flat rates for bridal and wedding services or special events. Here are some examples of average cost:

    • Hourly rate: $65-$85 or more per hour. Price is dependent on event size and number of attendees.
    • Starting rate for minimal palm designs: $15 or more.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands and wrist and bottom of feet up to the ankle: $175.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the mid-arm and feet to above the ankle: $300.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the elbow and the feet to the knee: $450.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
