We were very pleased with the carpet cleaning work mike did at our home. The carpet looked and felt brand new when he was finished. I did have some tough odors from my dogs peeing on our carpet. Mike came out several times to treat the area when one treatment wasn't enough. The odor is better, but by no means is it gone. I don't think it's any fault of mike's. He was very thorough. We unfortunately have extremely thick pile, which I think is difficult to penetrate with the pet odor remover, unless you dump the bottle on it and work it in. That being said, we would still use mike for future carpet cleaning because the rest of the job was very well done and he was very accommodating and stands by his work.

Carpet is old and has been stained from two dogs and a cat I inherited about ten years ago. Told Jess I couldn't replace it now but I don't have to smell it anymore either. He worked in the worst areas and he worked wonders. The carpet is old, but it is very clean and the pet smell is gone. Want him to return and do the rest after this all this dries I recommend Jess to anyone that wants a good job and a fair price

Sony cleaned a large oversize sectional that I purchased without realizing it had stains and pet odors. Sony was prompt, efficient and very helpful to give me advice on how to keep it clean. He was able to remove all stains and the couch looks great! I would definitely use his service again.

We hadn't had our carpets cleaned in over 3 years and recently our dog got sick all over our house. We were able to be scheduled rather quickly to take care of odor and stains. Bryan was prompt, kind, sweet to our dog and did a fantastic job at our carpets. It feels amazing and I am actually comfortable sitting on our floors now! Thank you so much!

I manage about 25 homes in the Portland metro area. Sometimes I get surprises as happened recently with a tenant moving out who owned cats. Briefly, the cement basement was disgusting with cat urine and odors. Andy and Pure Environmental talked me "off the ledge" so to speak. He was calm and professional and guided me through the process he would use. After an on-site visit, he explained exactly how and when actions would be taken including costs and what materials would be used. Andy knows what he is doing! If you have any kind of environmental hardship in the way of odor or damage, I would only call Pure Environmental. Period. The job was completed ON TIME, ON BUDGET, and with outstanding results. I could not be happier with any vendor who can turn a terrible situation around in a matter of one week. Highly recommended without reservations.

I'm very happy with the carpet cleaning I received from Little Paws Cleaning and Janitorial Services. Carlo was there on time. He was thorough and professional, and the job was done quickly. When I walked back into the house, the old dog smell from the previous homeowners was gone and it just smelled very fresh (not perfumey). A week later, it still smells fine. I'm sensitive to chemicals and smells, so I was glad that his method was nontoxic. I'd been concerned about drying time, but I just had the heat on a little and within several hours it felt completely dry. I will definitely hire Little Paws again, it was an easy and stress-free experience. Thank you, Carlo!

Best part of my service was his refreshing positive attitude. Andrew clearly takes pride in his service and results. I highly recommend him for any cleaning needs!

I spoke with Katie on the phone about my issues with my pet and carpet odor. She was personable and arranged for services promptly. Steve showed up on the day we arranged and was professional, friendly, knew his craft well and got the job done while allowing me to talk about my new grandson! He has a young child also so I enjoyed having a conversation about family. I would call him again and I may call for Katie's services for house cleaning. I try to do my own but I know that they are reputable and I am happy to support our local community whenever possible!

As a real estate agent in Portland, I know that one thing that can jeopardize a sale would be mold and/or a smell in a home. I have used Green Home Solutions on a couple of houses, and I can attest that they do what they say they can! I called Tom on a house, and he was out the next day assessing the situation, and he gave me a couple of options. Once he was done, the house was odor free, and the buyer was very happy. I would not hesitate to use Green Home Solutions again! Kathy MacNaughton

This company came quickly within a few hours on "same-day request" and provided excellent professional service. The price was very reasonable and they went back over one area of our carpet multiple times (at no extra charge) to ensure pet odor removal. Courteous and excellent attention to details.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who cleans area rugs?

Like your carpets, area rugs should ideally be cleaned at least once a year to remove dust and dirt and help them last longer. In general, carpet cleaning professionals also clean area rugs. Some rug cleaners bring their cleaning equipment to your home, while others remove your area rugs and clean them at their facilities. Either way, the rug should be cleaned with the solution most appropriate to its specific fabric and construction. It should also be completely dry before you return it to the floor.

What is upholstery cleaning?

From your carpets to your drapes to your furniture, all fabrics need to be cleaned. Cleaning upholstery, or the fabric on your furniture, removes the dirt and oils that are transferred to couches and chairs through regular use. Because furniture upholstery can be delicate and colors can fade easily, it’s often a good idea to let professional sofa cleaners handle the job. They’ll determine the type of fabric — usually cotton, linen, wool, suede or microfiber — and the appropriate method for cleaning it, either steam-cleaning or applying a dry-cleaning solvent. In general, cleaning an entire piece of furniture includes a pretreatment, cleaning, and neutralizing rinse to the body, plus removing and cleaning all cushions and cleaning all crevices.

An upholstery cleaner may clean the entire piece of furniture, on a regular schedule or by request, or do spot treatments to remove pet, food, drink, or oil and grease stains. Furniture can also be deodorized to remove the smell of pets or tobacco smoke. Furniture that’s used often, like that in your family room, should be cleaned once a year to keep it fresh and extend its life. Sofa cleaners often also offer repair services to mend tears in fabric or patch holes in leather.

How often should carpets be steam cleaned?

Dirty carpets can be unhealthy for the people living in the home, particularly those who have allergies, so it’s important to have them cleaned regularly; simply vacuuming once or twice a week isn’t enough. Carpet cleaning should be done by a professional carpet cleaning service at least once a year to remove grime and help extend the life of your carpet. Most carpet manufacturers recommend professional steam cleaning, which penetrates deep into the carpet fibers and lifts out both dirt and the pollutants that get tracked inside. Steam cleaning also removes most of the moisture, so carpets dry quickly enough for homeowners to resume using them the same day. Between professional carpet cleanings, your carpet may need an emergency spot cleaning. Pet accidents, food or drink spills, and more can often be effectively cleaned with some water and a drop of white vinegar, although many cleaners will also make house calls for smaller spills and hard-to-clean spots like wine or grease stains.

How much does it cost to clean a rug?

Area rugs are typically found in high-traffic areas of the home, like hallways and entryways, so they collect more dirt and stains than simple vacuuming can handle. Similar to carpet cleaning, professionals can come to your home to deep-clean your area rugs. The national average cost for rug cleaning ranges from $80 to $120, but may be higher or lower depending on the rug’s size and fiber type. Rug cleaners generally charge by the square foot; for example, a standard 8-foot by 10-foot rug costs an average of $100 to clean. Natural fiber rugs, such as wool or silk, are usually more expensive to have cleaned than synthetic rugs. A carpeting cleaning company may charge on average $1.50 per square foot to clean a synthetic rug, $2 per square foot for a wool rug, and $3 per square foot for a silk rug. Some delicate rugs need to be washed by hand, which increases the price. Carpet cleaning companies often offer additional services, such as removing odors or applying moth deterrent, which can add 20 cents to 25 cents per square foot.

Who cleans couches?

Even if your furniture doesn’t appear dirty or stained, your couches are collecting just as much dust, pollen, germs, pet hair and dander, and even food crumbs as your carpets. In general, the same professionals who clean your carpets and drapes can also clean your couches. Carpet cleaners usually offer upholstery cleaning services as well, and may offer a discount if you have your carpets cleaned at the same time. Alternatively, you can choose from a range of professional upholstery cleaners in your area who specialize in cleaning different types of upholstery fabrics, including delicate antique fabrics and other hard-to-clean materials such as suede. In addition to deep-cleaning the entire piece of furniture, sofa cleaners can spot-treat food, pet, and oil and grease stains. Most professionals also offer services to sanitize and deodorize your furniture and apply protectants to prevent future stains. As with carpets, experts recommend that you have your upholstered furniture cleaned once every year or two, depending on how much use it gets and whether you have children and pets.
