Had my daughter's apartment living room and hallway carpet cleaned. It's old carpet, she has 2 cats and a 5 year old. Needless to say, it was a mess. The doorway edges were frayed and filthy. Michael gave me an estimate to clean them and when he arrived and saw the condition of the transition areas, he said he also stretches carpet and trim off the damaged areas. I asked what other options he would recommend and the charges for each. He gave me detailed info and pricing for the additional services I chose and wrote up the invoice before starting. The carpet looks better than I could have imagined and he spent a lot of additional time getting the entry way trim attached, since we found out it had a concrete underfloor and nothing would screw or nail into it, not even his masonry drill bit but he persevered till all was done. Thanks for such a great job, my daughter was thrilled when she came home last week! Will call again when I need carpet cleaning or repair. Have given your name and number to the manager, she wants some carpets cleaned in the future. Thanks again!

Zeev promptly responded to my request within 2 hours for plumbing repair on a leaky pipe under my sink. He exceeded my expectations by arriving later in the day and fixed the leaking! Zeev went out of his way to go to Ace Hardware to pick up a part that would fix my issue. I highly recommend Zeev for any plumbing needs!

I asked Chris Wilhelm of Compass Home Repair and Renovation to install a utility sink in my basement. I had recently done a renovation restoring a bedroom, bathroom suite along with adding a washer and dryer for a a tenant. I didn't think about a utility sink, as part of that renovation which is a useful thing to have for larger and dirty clean-up projects. I only had a sink. There was no drain, no spigot or faucets. He dropped by my home to get an idea of the job's specifics and returned a week later. Chris installed the sink with a few hiccups along the way (such as trying to figure out how to turn off the water--not his fault--the recent plumbing was unlike anything he'd ever encountered. The sink works beautifully, and he integrated it next to the washer/dryer without taking up any additional space in this storage area. Best of all is the hose attachment, which insures that hard-to-reach spaces can be reached without effort. I've already hired Chris to do some restoration of my porch steps, which is due to be done this Saturday.

Tim is excellent! And he did a fantastic job! We have worked with him before (this is our third time), recommend him to friends and family, and will definitely work with him again. Way back in 2013 we did a full home remodel and those contractors did a dreadful job on the walls. The texture was huge and gloppy, out of character with our 1945 home, and just poorly done. I'd been giving it the evil eye for years, but assumed it was cost prohibitive to fix. In comes Tim to save the day! He primed the terrible textured walls of our entire living area: Kitchen, Dining Room, Living Room, Hallway, and Bathroom. Then he did three coats of smooth skim coat to get rid of the terrible texture. Then we had him prime and paint the finished product. I can't even tell you how beautiful it looks!! We are SO grateful to finally have clean, consistently textured, beautiful walls. It seems like a small thing, but it makes all the difference feeling comfortable in our house. In the midst of planning this project, we also had a plumbing issue in the basement that required some drywall repair. Tim made it happen without a second thought.

I'm so glad I contacted Ecosystem Pest Solutions. The crew did a fantastic job getting my basement cleaned up and the exclusion work was so thorough the only thing in the rat traps was dust. Patrick was very responsive to my calls and questions and followed up several times to make sure I was completely satisfied.

Thank you Andy - you did a fantastic job. Andy was easy to talk to, professional and friendly. He was honest and helped us prioritize what would be most helpful vs what could wait and be done only if needed. The company he contracted with to repair our crawlspace and cleaned and insulated our HVAC system missed a few deatils, but as soon as we reported to Andy - the company returned with in the hour to finish the job. Andy didn't stop with that - (even after we had already paid for the contracted work) he came out to our home and inspected the work done under the crawlspace, found that the work had still not been done to his specifications and worked for at least another hour completing the job to his higher standards. We really appreciated this, and feel this is evidence of a company that has honor and respects his clients (crawlspaces are just not that fun to explore and investigate even after they are refinished). Finally the cost of the work was very competitive and we felt included more than the other bids we received. We initially contacted Andy d/t our interest in the Biosweep - this is an expensive procedure and eveidently very effective but Andy didn't push it. He even suggested after we get the crawlspace cleaned and carpets, etc that we probably wouldn't even need it. We had a skunk living and spraying in the crawlspace and also sprayed the outside of the house, the smell infiltrated our entire house and kitchen - so we were needing professional advice and help to figure out where to even start. Andy also suggested we could save money (like half) by only insulating the HVAC ducts and not insulating the floors; for which other companies were pushing this and since we live in Oregon - it isn't as neccessary as other areas of the country. Area of improvement: I don't remember Andy mentioning that he would sub-contract this job - however, he may have mentioned to my husband? I was surprised when the men showed up to do the work.....as a female who was the one home during the work, I would have rather seen Andy arrive with the company to set the expectations for the job, this may have prevented the need for the men to return and for Andy to have had to do so much work after the fact.....but thats just a female perspective. Having Andy care enough about his clients and company to come inspect the work was above and beyond what most companies offer these days....

I first used DeMarco Builders in 2004. Joe DeMarco and his crew were remodeling the house next door to mine and were going to flip the house. I was so impressed with their attention to detail and the finished house. At the time I was looking for a contractor to add a master bedroom and bathroom and to do some other repairs to my home. After seeing Joe's work I hired him to do the work for me. In total, I added 450 sq ft, revamped my old bathroom, and reconfigured the existing 2 bedrooms, and added a small deck. I was and am thrilled with the finished product. Joe and crew worked quickly and gave me the house I wanted. Fast forward to February 2016, I needed my house painted, a window moved, the deck enlarged, and most importantly, my non functional kitchen gutted and rebuilt. I knew that Joe had returned to the Portland area and I was disappointed that he wasn't available to do the work. I contacted him for for some recommendations and he just said, "What do you need done? I will be back in the Long Beach (CA) area for some other business and I would be glad to get the work done for you." I was thrilled! He started on May 2, 2016 and on June 2 everything was done. My old kitchen was small, had only 2 cabinets and little to no counter space. It is still small, 12'x7' wall to wall but the difference in functionality is huge. I really didn't know how to make it work but Joe did! I always say I went from a one butt kitchen to a two butt kitchen with no additional space. Joe really wants to make his clients happy and to give them a finished product that exceeds expectations. He has done that twice for me and I cannot recommend him enough.

Start to Finish Construction remodeled our daylight basement after a very bad flood situation. They removed and hauled away all the damaged carpet and drywall. All new drywall was installed along with all new wood trim, carpeting and vinyl flooring. We were very happy with the end result and Chad added some very nice touches to the trim work at no extra charge. We had one small issue that was resolved very promptly. I would use them again without hesitation!

John Rank helped with remodeling our basement. It was a major job that included changing a large crawl space into a living room. It took about 12 weeks to complete. John is great to work with. He is very organized and keeps everything running smoothly. He is very good at keeping engineers. individual contractors and inspectors coming/going on schedule. He kept us informed of any issues that came up. The quality of work is great - we are so happy with the finished area, especially the built in cabinetry that John did himself. The only thing that could have been better is to have more time to order specific finishes and to be more involved in the design of the entertainment center.

The fellows from RM BIRD were fantastic! They listened to my needs, worked with my meager budget to remove mold & re-tile a tub/shower stall, were very responsive in starting the project & finished with great efficiency. There was a slight issue with the grout settling & leaving a couple of small holes, so I called Steve. He came out the next day after his regular work day was done to repair it. I was impressed by that bit of professionalism. It was my first time hiring a contractor; it won't be the last time hiring RM BIRD. Thanks guys!

I had new windows and siding repair done in my house. Zach was efficient with the bidding process, very detailed, and the time to complete and workmanship was great! Very professional. I work with general contractors all the time, and I was impressed with the efficiency and communication with Marsh Renovation. Sometimes it can take weeks to get responses from general contractors. so response time alone was impressive.

He left the area cleaner than when he arrived and even removed some rust stains. We highly recommend Dave "The Unplugger."

Davis of Rogue Remodel did a very difficult basement foundation repair in a tight timeline within a real estate transaction. It was done on time, on budget and with exception quality. As a real estate broker, I was blown away as this doesn't happen often with most contractors. These guys are fantastic and I have used them a number of times since with the same result!

We have a rental property and I needed a Handyman to fix a tumble dryer for me. I was in urgent need of a qualified professional. I was told about Thumbtack and to try using them. My experience of using the site and finding Erdman's was great. While Larry was fixing the dryer I asked him to take a look in the downstairs apartment where there had been a water leak in the basement due to a bad storm. He took a look and told me what needed to be done to fix the problem. The work involved fixing a down spout, removing a small tree, mortar berm on side of house, used wire and re-bar for cementing inside of the basement, repaired slider leak and finish the job off with dry lock. He also laid a new laminate floor in downstairs bedroom. I found Larry to be honest and trustworthy and extremely knowledgeable,he did an excellent job for me. He also tried hard to do the job in less hours and so saved me some money. I cannot say enough good things about Erdman's and will be using them as my Handyman service from now on. Larry and his team rock.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What is a mold remediation?

Mold remediation is the process of identifying and removing unhealthy levels of mold that have colonized in a home, office, school or other building. Over time, if untreated, mold can destroy a home by breaking down cellulose-based materials (like wood or ceiling tiles) and causing a slow and messy decay. In the shorter term, a mold infestation can cause severe health problems. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), mold can trigger respiratory problems, nasal and sinus congestion, eye irritation, nose or throat irritation, skin irritations, problems with your nervous system, and aches and pains. Mold inspection and mold remediation are often requested in tandem, although they are two separate services. Nationally, mold inspection costs range from $250 to $300. If mold has been positively identified in your house, either by visual examination or through mold testing, remediation can safely remove it. Properly trained and equipped professionals use specialized equipment (like vacuums and air scrubbers with HEPA filters) to keep mold spores contained while they remove contaminated materials and treat infested areas with antimicrobial spray. A key component to a successful mold remediation after eliminating the mold is ensuring that the water source that caused the mold infestation is also resolved.

How does mold remediation work?

Mold remediation can eliminate mold colonies from your home or business. Mold is a normal part of daily life, but in wet or humid settings mold can quickly colonize and spread by making spores. Whether visible or hidden, untreated mold can cause real health problems and cause extensive (and expensive) damage to your property. Mold remediation involves killing the mold, removing the dead mold and preventing future mold growth. Here is an example of the steps involved in professional mold remediation:

  • Contain work area and apply negative air pressure HEPA air purifiers to prevent cross-contamination. If spores spread, the colonies can easily regrow elsewhere in your home.
  • Mist an EPA-registered antimicrobial to suspend and kill mold spores.
  • Remove affected building surfaces.
  • Bag and dispose of contaminated materials properly.
  • Treat cavities/underlayment and dehumidify.
  • Abrasively remove dead loose mold.
  • Apply EPA-registered protective sealer.
  • Perform clearance testing.

Remove containment materials.

How is a mold test done?

Mold testing can help identify a mold infestation in your home or business. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of test you want done and the number of samples you request. The national average mold inspection cost is $250-$300. The EPA explains that if you have a visible mold problem, in most cases sampling and testing is unnecessary. However, if you have unexplained and potential mold-related illness or can smell mold in your house, mold inspection costs may be a good investment. To avoid unscrupulous testers, the EPA recommends working with a testing agency that adheres to the analytical methods laid out by professional organizations such as the American Industrial Hygiene Association or the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of testing done. Prices can also vary, depending on the size of the home, the number of surface areas to be tested, and the extent of the mold infestation. Here are some examples of mold inspection average costs:

  • Swab testing: $200-$300
    • A professional collects a surface swab from a potentially infested area for testing in a lab. Some professionals have concerns about this being the sole test done because it only gathers a small amount of data from a certain area of the house. That’s why it’s frequently done in conjunction with air cell testing.
  • Air cell testing: $250-$350
    • A professional collects an air sample in the home to measure the amount of mold spores in the air. This test is frequently done in conjunction with swab testing to ensure more complete data. Costs are higher for this test because the equipment required of the contractor is more expensive.
  • Both air cell and swab tests provided by the same company: $400-$600.

How do you get rid of mold?

Mold is a naturally occurring and important part of our ecosystem. That said, excessive mold can actually be hazardous to your health. Mold remediation is usually the best strategy to get rid of unhealthy levels of mold in your home or office. If you’re not comfortable working with mold or the area is larger than 10 square feet (3 feet by 3 feet), it is highly recommended to hire a mold remediation professional to resolve the problem. However, if you’re DIY-savvy, don’t have any health risks, and are not freaked out by mold, the EPA gives homeowners the greenlight to clean mold areas that are less than 10 square feet. Here are some EPA-recommended DIY cleaning tips:

  • Fix plumbing leaks and other water problems as soon as possible. Dry all items completely.
  • Scrub mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry completely.
  • Throw away absorbent or porous materials (like ceiling tiles and carpet) if they become moldy.
  • Avoid exposing yourself or others to mold.
  • Do not paint or caulk moldy surfaces. Clean up the mold and dry the surfaces before painting. Paint applied over moldy surfaces is likely to peel.
  • If you are unsure about how to clean an item (art, fine furniture, etc.) consult a reputable specialist affiliated with a professional organization in their field.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
