I was hesitant to hire a makeup artist for a full day of photo sessions without meeting her first, but it turns out my anxiety was completely unnecessary! Chelsea did a phenomenal job on every single client, including one who does hair and makeup professionally herself and couldn't stop talking about how much she loved her hair and makeup. We will definitely look forward to using her again!

I've worked with Tara as a model on a four-day shoot for a nationally published ad campaign. Tara did a phenomenal job on my hair and makeup, and I'd definitely recommend her in the future! Additionally, I reached out to Tara for my hair extensions. As a first time user of real hair extensions (with clamped beads) I felt extremely comfortable with the entire process. Tara was extremely knowledgeable and did an incredible job. I get complements on my hair everywhere I go! I'll always recommend her. She's definitely my go-to stylist, especially since she can do both hair and makeup!

Jamie is a true professional. And I don't throw that word around lightly even if it is used with abandon by so many people these days. I had a time crunch and needed an install on hair extensions with no time time to spare, Jamie was out of town when I made the request. She didn't bat an eye and immediately agreed to help me out on the very same day her plane landed! No whining, no extra fees for her trouble - nothing. I was impressed, But that was just the beginning. Jamie proved to be easy-going, down to earth and flexible and most amazing of all - she was able to take the brunt of my hyper, over-stressed, frantic energy with complete class and calm. She never looked annoyed with me (I would've been!) and she managed to bring my panic mode down from a up in my tree 10 level down to a normal 5 or so - which is unheard of. But - it;s really all about the hair. I had ordered my own hair from Spain and was a bit disappointed in it . I asked her opinion and she was very gracious and hones but not at all disrespectful in her reply. And so I am definitely going to go with her vendor next time I get my hair done with Jamie. She is a very quick worker, too. Fast and damn good at what she does. She knows everything about what she does but best of all - she does not feel the need to brag about it. Something else I find a rarity these days among stylists. And the more and the louder they brag about all their "years of experience " and how they are a "professional" I find, the less they really know. Jamie is the exact opposite of those braggarts. She is the quiet genius to their bumbling moron. And I am couldn't be happier that I found her! I told her today that I consider a great stylist to be as rare and as important as a great auto mechanic - and when you find them - you stick with them. And I intend on staying loyal to her. She is talented, flexible, knowlgeable about hair and products, and I almost don't want to let the secret out about her for fear everyone will start going to her and I won't be able to get an appointment anymore! lol - but she also has ridiculously reasonable prices to top it all off. I have to stop bragging about her now because i am going to create the exact thing I fear, So ...that's it. You people keep your own stylists. Jamie is mine! ;-)

I meet Cedar at her home for a pre wedding trial for both hair and make-up. I definitely recommend doing a pre trial as we found out what exactly we needed to keep my make-up and hair in place. On my wedding day Cedar was early and got me ready right on time.Cedar was so sweet and loving to both my self and family. She even went out of her way to get my lil ones hair done. I thank her from the bottom of my heart and I definitely recommend Cedar for any occasion.

Shawna is the artist who did my bridal hair and makeup for my wedding. Shawna was a consummate professional from the start of the process through my last touch up and I would give her 10 stars if I could. She is highly skilled and crafted the perfect hair and makeup combination for the wedding. In fact, it felt like she knew what I wanted/needed better than I did! The hair and makeup presented beautifully in the pictures and I would not have changed a thing. Shawna was patient, kind, and helped keep the morning before my wedding very calm. It was like having a friend with amazing skills do my hair and makeup! If you are looking for someone to make you look like the best version of yourself on your wedding day, you should book Shawna or a member of the Lux team!

My wife has been getting her hair done by Christina for two years now. She did her hair for our engagement photos and our wedding and it’s been a pleasure to see it be such a seamless and enjoyable experience for the both of them. I utilize other amenities within the Spa and it’s clear that she knows what she’s doing and does it great!

Kosar did my wedding day make-up. We did a trial first at my house to determine the look I wanted, and then she did my make-up at my wedding venue the day-of. She has a lot of great make-up she selects from, but also since I buy Mac makeup we were able to use some of mine as well. I prefer a natural look and took comfort knowing my favorite lipstick and a few of the colors I normally wear, I'd have on for my wedding day. Kosar is a pro, she knows how to contour beautifully. She also knows how to use the right amount so your look is elegant in person and also gives allows you to look great for the camera. She did a great job listening to what I wanted. She also understood the timing required to get make-up completed on your wedding day, such that I could relax for my hair and then the make-up. My eye make-up and all around look was stunning and I was so pleased to have her there helping me on my big day!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mobile hairdresser?

A mobile hairdresser is a cosmetologist trained to cut, color and style hair who can provide hairdressing services at remote locations. Often, mobile hairdressers are hired for events such as weddings, bachelorette parties, prom night, birthdays and other occasions. The hairstylist can come to your location to do your hair, or provide hairstyling for your group.

For events, mobile hairstylists more often provide updos and formal styles than highlights or hair color. Mobile hairdressers bring all the necessary hairstyling tools and products such as lotions and sprays to create your look. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110. Pricing for different services can vary greatly depending on stylist reputation, training and regional rates. For example, haircuts could range between $35 and $150, while hair coloring services could range in price from $65 to $200. Some mobile hairstylists may include the cost of travel in their fees, while other may have it as an added charge, such as 50 cents to $1 for each mile beyond their standard service range.

      What is a hair extension?

A hair extension is a beauty product designed to give you the appearance of longer and/or fuller hair. Hair extensions are made of synthetic material or real human hair and are attached to your natural hair by a variety of techniques such as a weave (sewing), hot fusion, tape-in, cold fusion, bonding, metal clips, micro ring or micro loops, and more. The type of technique you select as well as the quality and volume of the hair you choose all affect cost. Hair extensions can last anywhere from three weeks to six months, depending on the application technique. For example, tape-in extensions may last approximately four weeks, while extensions applied using a hot fusion technique may stay in for up to six months. The hot fusion technique takes longer, costs more, and requires more training on the part of the hair stylist, but the result is more natural-looking extensions that can be washed and heat-styled with confidence.

      What is a seamless extension?

A seamless hair extension is a type of clip-on hair extension. The extension hair is called the weft. Near the top of the weft, a metal clip mounted to the weft on a silicone base is used to attach the extension to your natural hair. In a traditional clip-on extension, the base that attaches the metal clip to the weft is fabric.

People may prefer seamless extensions due to their lower profile; the silicone can be up to 50 percent thinner than the fabric, making the extension appear more natural — and, therefore, seamless. Seamless extensions usually can be washed (although you shouldn’t keep them submerged for more than 20 seconds) and heat-styled on lower heat settings. You can gently brush seamless hair extensions as well as have them dyed a darker color by a trained professional.

How much should you tip a hairstylist?

A hairstylist can provide you with a cut, color or highlights, or style your hair for an event. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110, but prices can vary greatly depending on the service you receive, where you live, and the salon’s or hairdresser’s reputation. A good rule of thumb is to tip your hairstylist 20 percent of your total bill. In smaller towns, 15 percent may be the norm, but in larger cities 20 percent is generally the baseline. If you frequent a salon where the shampooer, colorist, and hair cutter are all different people, you can divide that 20 percent among those service providers in proportion to the skill level and time required to do their job. Many hairstylists rent a chair from the salon and must pay a monthly rent to the salon owner.

How much do hair extensions cost?

Hair extensions are synthetic or real human hair integrations that add volume and length to your hair. Hairstylists are trained in different techniques to attach extensions to your hair. The cost of extensions can vary greatly depending on the technique used to apply the hair, as well as the type of hair you select. Synthetic hair is typically the least expensive, human hair is next on the pricing scale, remy hair is next, and what is called “virgin” human hair is generally the most sought-after and most expensive. Remy hair signifies that all the cuticles are intact and running in the same direction, making for smoother hair extensions in the long term. Hair is deemed virgin when all the hair is from one donor and has never undergone any chemical processing. Hair prices will vary from company to company; here are some examples of hair from online retailers.

      • Virgin strands (25 strands weighing approximately 1 gram each) for hot fusion application: $44 per bundle.
      • Virgin hair weave (approximately 4 ounces per package): $149 each.

Here are some sample application costs from hairstylists.

      • Full sew-in: $175-$200 or more.
      • Partial sew-in: $125 or more.
      • Micro-link weft extensions: $300 or more.
      • Full-bonded extensions: $75 or more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
