"I am glad that I decided to use thumbtack to find Michael at Rain or Shine Carpet Cleaners. I started by creating my project and immediately within minutes, Michael along with 3 others responded to my inquiry. I guess if you ask me know why I picked Rain or Shine I would have to say, "best decision I made in a long time!" Mike answered all my questions fast and friendly and after I picked him out of the 4 total quotes he arrived on the exact time and day he said he would! He came and did a thorough walk thru and was honest about every single charge. And people here are right NO PRESSURE TO BUY ALL THE UPCHARGES. I am the one that actually decided to go with it just cuz he was so imformative. Didn't hesitate on his answers and didn't get caught in a contradictory position! Well after having him explain in detail all my questions, next thing you know we are sitting and just chatting a whole 2 hours before the job started lol! It was as if I had met an old high school buddy of mine! AND GUESS WHAT IT ALSO INDICTED TO ME THAT HE DID NOT OVERBOOK HIS CLIENTS TO WHERE HE WAS RUSHING THRU YOURS TO GET TO THE NEXT! Most cleaners I had seemed to zoom thru the process, anxious to hurry off to their next job! Mike had scheduled one small job before mine and kept the rest of the day open for me before committing to another job! Believe me it is not cuz he was not popular either! As we sat chatting before the job, he had so many inquires come in! Also the fact he didn't make any fuss over helping to move any items I needed too beat the last regular company I had by far! I am disabled and in pain and another reason it was so nice of Mike to sit and comfort me with a conversation! He was so polite to sit and just talk never rushing me while I patiently waited for my medications to kick in. It was very very supportive of him and for sure not something he was obligated to do at all! He could of just came and bullied his way thru my house, had my ok to start regardless of my position, get the job done, collect on his money and say his thanks and good byes and I am sure for those who are in more of a rush he is the type to get there and get down to work as fast as you would like him to! He knew I was in pain, shaking back and forth in pain and never once pushed me to start the job, or brushed my questions off! It was very very nice of him to be considerate of my handicaps and he moved and did all the work without one hesitation to go over and beyond what I was paying him just to do. Mike came on his own ready to get down to work hard on my carpets. He went thru and cleaned my whole 4300 sq foot home doing his job in a thorough manner taking pride in what he was doing! I know he did the best out of all the carpet cleaners in the past cuz the work spoke for itself!!!! Never in the 8 years I lived in this house has my carpet looked so great and dried so fast! And you could tell he took his time and sucked up all the debris and water cuz my carpets looked so thoroughly Rinsed and dried!!!! Others would zoom thru so fast that the edges of my carpet would be drenched for 2 days! As if they just shoved all the water and dirt to the edges of the wall! Yeah the hallways would dry but you didn't know they just shoved the water and dirt to the edges near the wall until it all dried 2 days later and you see brown dirt line up all along the wall where the carpet seemed like it just molded from mositure! Mike took his time to extract ALL the water on my carpet! No rushing at all but I knew he wanted to make sure he did the best job he could for the money I was paying and the job I was just expecting! *I HIGHLY recommend people to stay away from any other process but the HOT WATER EXTRACTION WITH A WAND!!! Do not hire anyone with the use of cloth drying! I guess it's called a "bonnet" cleaning process. It's not good at all! It doesn't extract the water! Mike utilizes a scrubber if he needs it and used the wand and sanitizing water temp that will efficiently clean and dry your carpets! Mike finished my whole house, cleaned all 4 area rugs in my home and will be coming back Monday again to do all my expensive couches! He also said he does duct cleaning and wooden floor cleaning too! I knew for 100% he was truly a honest professional bound by his words! I always wondered for years why there was a black strip of dust all along my wall more and more each year since I did my air ducts last! Mike proved to me he knew what he was doing and knew his stuff! I never told him of the black strip! He never had an idea! Until he told me reasons why it happens which proved to me that the last company didn't do their job as promised! Mike even told me it's not needed every year more like 5 years! Who says that? Most people will say 2-3 just so they know they can maybe make a couple hundred in extra bucks for doing nothing! Most people try to tell you this and that all sophisticated like they know their thing just so they see your jaw drop into thinking their the master at what they do having complete control of those who only take the advice of a professional and use tons of money on services they don't need as often! Mike is for sure a multi talented guy! A "Fred Meyer" one stop shopping "do it all" kind of guy! Everyone who gets lucky enough to get a response from Mike at Rain and Shine DO NOT PASS HIM BY! And please at least give all the quotes a chance to respond and don't be hast in hiring the first person that seems to write back! Remember these people are on the job at times and can't respond fast like others! So just know Mike will get back to you ASAP! Take your time and READ THE REVIEWS! We are here for each other! We depend on the past experiences of others looking for exactly what we all need done! Take it from all that are taking the time to sit here and rate their experiences! We have no incentive to give good reviews, no pressure to, nor have any reason to write "lies"! Take it from me I have had many companies come out and never did I ever have anyone as polite and considerate as Mike! Most are in and out so fast you don't even remember their name! He makes sure that he doesn't overbook so that your cheated your time! That to me is a "family" business that is not a chain or contracted out from another company! He cares how people think of his work! Thanks Mike! I appreciated your time while I was in pain, the help you gave by moving what you needed to without a second thought of asking, sweating your way thru my house as you worked so hard and carefully not to rush but to make sure you wouldn't move onto the next area without being happy with the area your cleaning! It was a great decision by far! I highly recommend RAIN OR SHINE CARPET CLEANING HANDS DOWN! "

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who cleans area rugs?

Like your carpets, area rugs should ideally be cleaned at least once a year to remove dust and dirt and help them last longer. In general, carpet cleaning professionals also clean area rugs. Some rug cleaners bring their cleaning equipment to your home, while others remove your area rugs and clean them at their facilities. Either way, the rug should be cleaned with the solution most appropriate to its specific fabric and construction. It should also be completely dry before you return it to the floor.

How often should carpets be steam cleaned?

Dirty carpets can be unhealthy for the people living in the home, particularly those who have allergies, so it’s important to have them cleaned regularly; simply vacuuming once or twice a week isn’t enough. Carpet cleaning should be done by a professional carpet cleaning service at least once a year to remove grime and help extend the life of your carpet. Most carpet manufacturers recommend professional steam cleaning, which penetrates deep into the carpet fibers and lifts out both dirt and the pollutants that get tracked inside. Steam cleaning also removes most of the moisture, so carpets dry quickly enough for homeowners to resume using them the same day. Between professional carpet cleanings, your carpet may need an emergency spot cleaning. Pet accidents, food or drink spills, and more can often be effectively cleaned with some water and a drop of white vinegar, although many cleaners will also make house calls for smaller spills and hard-to-clean spots like wine or grease stains.

How much does it cost to carpet a bedroom?

If you’re building a new home, remodeling, or ready for new carpet in your bedroom, you’ll want to know carpet installation costs. Here are the factors that affect the cost of your new bedroom carpet:

  • Installation cost per square yard: From under $2 to over $6. Carpet companies have a labor cost per square foot for installing your new carpet. Depending on where you live in the country, that rate can vary greatly. This rate does not include the cost of the carpet.
  • Type of carpet: from $1 per square foot to $20 or more per square foot. The fibers that make up your carpet will have a direct effect on cost. As an example, specialty wool carpets may start at about $10 per square foot, while a manufactured fiber like nylon may be about $2 per square foot.
  • Removal of old carpet: from $1 to $4 per square yard. Old carpet is labor-intensive to remove and also costs money to dispose of or recycle. The cost to remove carpet will depend on how much carpet you need removed and whether your installation pros offer a discounted rate for installing your new carpet at the same time.
  • Subfloor repair: from $40 to $70 per hour (plus materials cost). If the flooring underneath your old carpet is damaged, it must be repaired before the new carpet is installed. Many carpet pros can offer this service, or you can hire a handyman to handle the job.
  • Type of carpet pad: $1 per square yard and up, depending on the thickness. The cost to install carpet pad is typically included with the labor cost per yard of installing the carpet itself.

How much does it cost to clean a rug?

Area rugs are typically found in high-traffic areas of the home, like hallways and entryways, so they collect more dirt and stains than simple vacuuming can handle. Similar to carpet cleaning, professionals can come to your home to deep-clean your area rugs. The national average cost for rug cleaning ranges from $80 to $120, but may be higher or lower depending on the rug’s size and fiber type. Rug cleaners generally charge by the square foot; for example, a standard 8-foot by 10-foot rug costs an average of $100 to clean. Natural fiber rugs, such as wool or silk, are usually more expensive to have cleaned than synthetic rugs. A carpeting cleaning company may charge on average $1.50 per square foot to clean a synthetic rug, $2 per square foot for a wool rug, and $3 per square foot for a silk rug. Some delicate rugs need to be washed by hand, which increases the price. Carpet cleaning companies often offer additional services, such as removing odors or applying moth deterrent, which can add 20 cents to 25 cents per square foot.

How much does it cost to clean a carpet?

Carpet cleaning costs vary depending on the type of cleaning, such as steam cleaning, and whether there are any stains that require special treatment. The main cost factors are the square footage of the carpet and the material it’s made from. The national average carpet cleaning price ranges from $100 to $130 for a typical suburban home, but steam cleaning prices start at an average of $120. In general, professional carpet cleaning ranges from an average of 20 cents to 50 cents per square foot, depending on where you live. Many companies have a minimum fee or room requirement — such as two rooms for an average of $40 each — and will charge more to clean carpeted stairs or a second floor. Finally, the carpet fiber type, density and pile will also affect the cost of cleaning; man-made fibers are stain-resistant and easier to clean, while wool carpeting is sensitive to water and requires more care.
