I am glad that I decided to use thumbtack to find Michael at Rain or Shine Carpet Cleaners. I started by creating my project and immediately within minutes, Michael along with 3 others responded to my inquiry. I guess if you ask me know why I picked Rain or Shine I would have to say, "best decision I made in a long time!" Mike answered all my questions fast and friendly and after I picked him out of the 4 total quotes he arrived on the exact time and day he said he would! He came and did a thorough walk thru and was honest about every single charge. And people here are right NO PRESSURE TO BUY ALL THE UPCHARGES. I am the one that actually decided to go with it just cuz he was so imformative. Didn't hesitate on his answers and didn't get caught in a contradictory position! Well after having him explain in detail all my questions, next thing you know we are sitting and just chatting a whole 2 hours before the job started lol! It was as if I had met an old high school buddy of mine! AND GUESS WHAT IT ALSO INDICTED TO ME THAT HE DID NOT OVERBOOK HIS CLIENTS TO WHERE HE WAS RUSHING THRU YOURS TO GET TO THE NEXT! Most cleaners I had seemed to zoom thru the process, anxious to hurry off to their next job! Mike had scheduled one small job before mine and kept the rest of the day open for me before committing to another job! Believe me it is not cuz he was not popular either! As we sat chatting before the job, he had so many inquires come in! Also the fact he didn't make any fuss over helping to move any items I needed too beat the last regular company I had by far! I am disabled and in pain and another reason it was so nice of Mike to sit and comfort me with a conversation! He was so polite to sit and just talk never rushing me while I patiently waited for my medications to kick in. It was very very supportive of him and for sure not something he was obligated to do at all! He could of just came and bullied his way thru my house, had my ok to start regardless of my position, get the job done, collect on his money and say his thanks and good byes and I am sure for those who are in more of a rush he is the type to get there and get down to work as fast as you would like him to! He knew I was in pain, shaking back and forth in pain and never once pushed me to start the job, or brushed my questions off! It was very very nice of him to be considerate of my handicaps and he moved and did all the work without one hesitation to go over and beyond what I was paying him just to do. Mike came on his own ready to get down to work hard on my carpets. He went thru and cleaned my whole 4300 sq foot home doing his job in a thorough manner taking pride in what he was doing! I know he did the best out of all the carpet cleaners in the past cuz the work spoke for itself!!!! Never in the 8 years I lived in this house has my carpet looked so great and dried so fast! And you could tell he took his time and sucked up all the debris and water cuz my carpets looked so thoroughly Rinsed and dried!!!! Others would zoom thru so fast that the edges of my carpet would be drenched for 2 days! As if they just shoved all the water and dirt to the edges of the wall! Yeah the hallways would dry but you didn't know they just shoved the water and dirt to the edges near the wall until it all dried 2 days later and you see brown dirt line up all along the wall where the carpet seemed like it just molded from mositure! Mike took his time to extract ALL the water on my carpet! No rushing at all but I knew he wanted to make sure he did the best job he could for the money I was paying and the job I was just expecting! *I HIGHLY recommend people to stay away from any other process but the HOT WATER EXTRACTION WITH A WAND!!! Do not hire anyone with the use of cloth drying! I guess it's called a "bonnet" cleaning process. It's not good at all! It doesn't extract the water! Mike utilizes a scrubber if he needs it and used the wand and sanitizing water temp that will efficiently clean and dry your carpets! Mike finished my whole house, cleaned all 4 area rugs in my home and will be coming back Monday again to do all my expensive couches! He also said he does duct cleaning and wooden floor cleaning too! I knew for 100% he was truly a honest professional bound by his words! I always wondered for years why there was a black strip of dust all along my wall more and more each year since I did my air ducts last! Mike proved to me he knew what he was doing and knew his stuff! I never told him of the black strip! He never had an idea! Until he told me reasons why it happens which proved to me that the last company didn't do their job as promised! Mike even told me it's not needed every year more like 5 years! Who says that? Most people will say 2-3 just so they know they can maybe make a couple hundred in extra bucks for doing nothing! Most people try to tell you this and that all sophisticated like they know their thing just so they see your jaw drop into thinking their the master at what they do having complete control of those who only take the advice of a professional and use tons of money on services they don't need as often! Mike is for sure a multi talented guy! A "Fred Meyer" one stop shopping "do it all" kind of guy! Everyone who gets lucky enough to get a response from Mike at Rain and Shine DO NOT PASS HIM BY! And please at least give all the quotes a chance to respond and don't be hast in hiring the first person that seems to write back! Remember these people are on the job at times and can't respond fast like others! So just know Mike will get back to you ASAP! Take your time and READ THE REVIEWS! We are here for each other! We depend on the past experiences of others looking for exactly what we all need done! Take it from all that are taking the time to sit here and rate their experiences! We have no incentive to give good reviews, no pressure to, nor have any reason to write "lies"! Take it from me I have had many companies come out and never did I ever have anyone as polite and considerate as Mike! Most are in and out so fast you don't even remember their name! He makes sure that he doesn't overbook so that your cheated your time! That to me is a "family" business that is not a chain or contracted out from another company! He cares how people think of his work! Thanks Mike! I appreciated your time while I was in pain, the help you gave by moving what you needed to without a second thought of asking, sweating your way thru my house as you worked so hard and carefully not to rush but to make sure you wouldn't move onto the next area without being happy with the area your cleaning! It was a great decision by far! I highly recommend RAIN OR SHINE CARPET CLEANING HANDS DOWN!

Jess is a fantastic carpet cleaner and a great guy. He arrived on time, explained what needed to be cleaned, including spot removals, and performed his work exactly as quoted - actually above and beyond. I've used other carpet cleaners in the past, but Prowash Plus cleaned my carpet better than any of them. I have 20 year old carpeting and his cleaning makes it look brand new - truly amazing. He's very thorough. Thankfully, too he doesn't try to sell you extra "stuff" like Stanley Steamer or some of the others. Plus, the carpets after his cleaning have less moisture residue than the other companies. So his process not only cleans better but also removes the excess water more efficiently. Jess is a really nice person and someone you can trust wholeheartedly.

Alexander did a move out cleaning that included steam cleaning the carpets. It was a large home and it took a little longer than he expected, but I appreciated that he took the extra time to do an excellent and thorough job! When finished he asked me to look it over and let him know if there were touchups I'd like him to do, which I appreciated, but there were none. He did a great job. And the carpet cleaning was fabulous. They are a light beige and now they look better than when I moved in 7 years ago!

Arturo and his wife have cleaned two homes for me. The first was a post remolding job. They actually came in on that job to replace the first crew who were not doing a good job and brought their kids with them. They did a great job, one little issue but came back to correct it no questions asked. Because of their great work we hired them to come clean a house we bought that had a heavy smoker living in it. Every square inch had to be cleaned with special chemicals before painting. After repairs were made to the house, painting and new carpet they returned to do a finial cleaning. We will call Arturo and his wife for future work.

I had many carpet cleaners cancel, including Stanley Steemers. Ames drove on snowy roads to get to our house and got the job done. We were in a time crunch and Ames showed up in bad weather.

This was by far the best carpet cleaning ever, Tim was on time, he was very courteous and took pride in his work which one doesn't see much of anymore. I have used the big name carpet cleaning companies and they come in and out in 20 minutes which is not enough time to do the job right, Tim was here a full hour and a half making sure to do the job perfectly. When you find a great person to do your carpets properly it is such a comfort especially after the last two big companies failed to do a good job. I highly recommend this man for your carpet and upholstery cleaning needs. I look forward to him being our new guy for all of our carpets and upholstery cleaning in the future! Thank you So much Tim

Amelia was a pleasure to work with. She gave a quote and stuck with it. In addition to cleaning the various counters, blinds, windows, and bathrooms, she was able to clean the carpets. We discussed a price for the carpet cleaning in addition the house cleaning and that never changed. She and her son spent a long time making sure everything was taken care of. They were able make the house feel like it was new again and ready for a family to move in, not a former bachelor pad.

Although Brian i believe your rates are low for all the additional spot treatments you applied, but that said this separates your from 99% of oregon carpet cleaners. Thank you Andy - you did a fantastic job. Andy was easy to talk to, professional and friendly. He was honest and helped us prioritize what would be most helpful vs what could wait and be done only if needed. The company he contracted with to repair our crawlspace and cleaned and insulated our HVAC system missed a few deatils, but as soon as we reported to Andy - the company returned with in the hour to finish the job. Andy didn't stop with that - (even after we had already paid for the contracted work) he came out to our home and inspected the work done under the crawlspace, found that the work had still not been done to his specifications and worked for at least another hour completing the job to his higher standards. We really appreciated this, and feel this is evidence of a company that has honor and respects his clients (crawlspaces are just not that fun to explore and investigate even after they are refinished). Finally the cost of the work was very competitive and we felt included more than the other bids we received. We initially contacted Andy d/t our interest in the Biosweep - this is an expensive procedure and eveidently very effective but Andy didn't push it. He even suggested after we get the crawlspace cleaned and carpets, etc that we probably wouldn't even need it. We had a skunk living and spraying in the crawlspace and also sprayed the outside of the house, the smell infiltrated our entire house and kitchen - so we were needing professional advice and help to figure out where to even start. Andy also suggested we could save money (like half) by only insulating the HVAC ducts and not insulating the floors; for which other companies were pushing this and since we live in Oregon - it isn't as neccessary as other areas of the country. Area of improvement: I don't remember Andy mentioning that he would sub-contract this job - however, he may have mentioned to my husband? I was surprised when the men showed up to do the work.....as a female who was the one home during the work, I would have rather seen Andy arrive with the company to set the expectations for the job, this may have prevented the need for the men to return and for Andy to have had to do so much work after the fact.....but thats just a female perspective. Having Andy care enough about his clients and company to come inspect the work was above and beyond what most companies offer these days....

Start to Finish Construction remodeled our daylight basement after a very bad flood situation. They removed and hauled away all the damaged carpet and drywall. All new drywall was installed along with all new wood trim, carpeting and vinyl flooring. We were very happy with the end result and Chad added some very nice touches to the trim work at no extra charge. We had one small issue that was resolved very promptly. I would use them again without hesitation!

Without a doubt, the best carpet cleaning service that we have had for our home. Prompt, thorough, and friendly. Our carpets have never been cleaner. We have used a half dozen or more companies however Jose prepped our carpet with a special machine/vacuum (in addition to a regular vacuum) that pulled up a ton pet fur and debris. We will now only use Portland NW Carpet Cleaning.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should carpets be steam cleaned?

Dirty carpets can be unhealthy for the people living in the home, particularly those who have allergies, so it’s important to have them cleaned regularly; simply vacuuming once or twice a week isn’t enough. Carpet cleaning should be done by a professional carpet cleaning service at least once a year to remove grime and help extend the life of your carpet. Most carpet manufacturers recommend professional steam cleaning, which penetrates deep into the carpet fibers and lifts out both dirt and the pollutants that get tracked inside. Steam cleaning also removes most of the moisture, so carpets dry quickly enough for homeowners to resume using them the same day. Between professional carpet cleanings, your carpet may need an emergency spot cleaning. Pet accidents, food or drink spills, and more can often be effectively cleaned with some water and a drop of white vinegar, although many cleaners will also make house calls for smaller spills and hard-to-clean spots like wine or grease stains.

Who cleans area rugs?

Like your carpets, area rugs should ideally be cleaned at least once a year to remove dust and dirt and help them last longer. In general, carpet cleaning professionals also clean area rugs. Some rug cleaners bring their cleaning equipment to your home, while others remove your area rugs and clean them at their facilities. Either way, the rug should be cleaned with the solution most appropriate to its specific fabric and construction. It should also be completely dry before you return it to the floor.

How much is the cheapest carpet?

If you’re looking to reduce carpet installation costs, there are several ways to save. Start by considering your carpeting needs. Manufactured materials such as polyester and nylon will be cheaper than natural fibers such as wool. From big box retailers, starting prices for olefin-based carpet are approximately 50 cents per square foot — making the cost under $5 per square yard. Indoor carpets made with olefin fibers are typically the least expensive on the market. Keep in mind that olefin fibers are not as soft on bare feet as other fibers, so are often used in areas like basements, playrooms or indoor patios. Nylon and polyester are good options to reduce carpet installation costs while still creating a cozy feel. The face weight, fiber construction and density of a carpet all affect the cost per square foot. The cheapest nylon or polyester carpets can start at just under $2 per square foot, making them about $18 per square yard. Lower-cost carpet tends to wear out more quickly and show stains more easily, so avoid light colors and vacuum regularly to keep the fibers clear of dirt that might age it too quickly.

How much does it cost to install carpet?

If you’re ready to bring new life into your house with a makeover from the ground up, you’re ready to learn more about carpet installation costs. Installation costs vary greatly, depending on a number of factors such as the type of carpet, the number of square yards, any necessary repair work, the number of stairs you have, and where you live. Due to these variables, the national average cost of carpet installation ranges between $200 and $4,500.

To start planning for your new carpet, measure roughly how many square yards of carpet you’ll need. Research the main carpet styles and materials you like to get a feel for what they cost. Nylon carpets are typically the least expensive, and wool is one of the higher-end carpets. Prices per square foot might range from under $2 to over $10, depending on materials. Count the number of stairs you want carpeted; each one might average between $3 and $10 (or more for box steps). Carpet removal can be an added cost as well, averaging $1-$4 per square yard, depending on the company and regional disposal costs.

How much does it cost to clean a rug?

Area rugs are typically found in high-traffic areas of the home, like hallways and entryways, so they collect more dirt and stains than simple vacuuming can handle. Similar to carpet cleaning, professionals can come to your home to deep-clean your area rugs. The national average cost for rug cleaning ranges from $80 to $120, but may be higher or lower depending on the rug’s size and fiber type. Rug cleaners generally charge by the square foot; for example, a standard 8-foot by 10-foot rug costs an average of $100 to clean. Natural fiber rugs, such as wool or silk, are usually more expensive to have cleaned than synthetic rugs. A carpeting cleaning company may charge on average $1.50 per square foot to clean a synthetic rug, $2 per square foot for a wool rug, and $3 per square foot for a silk rug. Some delicate rugs need to be washed by hand, which increases the price. Carpet cleaning companies often offer additional services, such as removing odors or applying moth deterrent, which can add 20 cents to 25 cents per square foot.
