Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want.

Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June.

Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

How many photos should you get from a wedding photographer?

A professional wedding photographer will usually supply their clients with several hundred photos (200, 300, 400 or 800 and more). Some might even provide more than 1,000 photos. It ultimately depends on the photographer.

Wedding photographers will usually take several thousand photos but cut them down to the keepers. They also have to edit these photos. Typically, they will provide them to the clients on a digital hard drive, as an online download or even in a photo album with beautiful decorations.

What pictures should be taken at a wedding?

On your wedding day, your photographer should take pictures of the couple getting ready for the wedding, as well as a fun personality picture before activities begin. They should also photograph showstoppers like the bouquet, invitations, shoes, reception space, cake, centerpieces, rings and the veil. A generational photo with parents or grandparents is also special. There should also be photos of the bride and groom alone, the ceremony, the confetti-filled exit, and hair and makeup.

How long do wedding photographers stay?

A wedding photographer usually expects to work a full day. This gives them time to photograph the venue, cake, rings, shoes, centerpieces, invitations and other aspects of the wedding before the guests arrive. It also allows them time to get photos of the bride and groom alone, as well as the hair and makeup process and fun personality pictures. Then, they will work through all the parts of the wedding.

When should you take wedding photos?

Couples can take wedding photos before their actual ceremony, during cocktail hour (before the reception), during the wedding reception or even after their wedding. The least stressful time to do it is often before the ceremony when hair and makeup generally look their best, temperatures are usually lower because it’s earlier in the day and the couple won’t have to think or worry about it for the rest of the day.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

I hired Christopher to photograph my wedding. We had a very small backyard ceremony and reception, and I wanted someone to capture that without the whole "wedding photography" spectacle. Christopher was the perfect choice! Neither my husband or I like to have our photo taken, but he made us feel comfortable and at ease, and took some fantastic photos that we actually like. Christopher is professional, talented, and a joy to work with. I would hire him again in a heartbeat and recommend him to my friends.

My wife and I hired Chris as our wedding photographer. He was professional, arrived early, and was flexible with our requests. Everyone loved the photos he took. He found some great backgrounds near our venue to use. The pictures ranged from very candid to staged; but all of them looked awesome! We were lucky to have hired such a great photographer last minute. We'd highly recommend Chris to anyone looking for an event photographer.

I cannot recommend Stefani highly enough. We had a small wedding (only 20 people) and only needed a photographer to capture the ceremony and do a few group shots. For just that short amount of time, we got over 300 BEAUTIFUL photos. She was so fun to work with, and no one felt self-conscious. Stefani had so many great tricks to evoke real emotion in the photos she took, whether they were candid or posed. We have so many of me and my husband laughing, great ones of us with family and friends, etc. The price was fantastic, the photos were superb, and the experience was so much fun. Stefani really captured our wedding day fully and gave us pictures that will help us remember it for years to come.

I can’t say enough nice things about Emilee! She did our engagement photography last year and just did wedding photos of us in our recent elopement. She was super flexible (I think we changed plans 3 times...?) and so dedicated to making our wedding happen, despite COVID, wildfires, and working around intermittent rainfall at the coast. Then there’s the photos! Such beautiful work, I am getting tons of compliments from family and friends. Emilee took amazing shots of us during our ceremony as well as afterward on the beach. Her prices are incredibly affordable and probably the best value one could find. I hope to hire her again for another photo shoot in the future. ❤️

Abby distinguished herself from the pack at the get go by her warmth, professionalism and competitive pricing. I hired her for my sister's post wedding black tie party as a wedding gift. It was the best decision I made! She perfectly captured the spirit of the evening which was so happy and filled with love. Her eye and her sense of whimsy added a dimension to the photographs of this special evening that I think few photographers could capture. I wish I could give her 10 stars! Thank you Abby!

Everything about my experience with Brooke was amazing! From the moment she first reached out to me, to my wedding day and even post wedding. She was very easy to deal with, she was flexible on the date, time, location etc. She made me and my husband feel very at ease during the photo session of our elopement. She was accommodating to any of our photo requests and welcoming to some of our family members that were present as well. Her husband, Tyler was nice and such great help too! I truly love how my photos turned out, it was very “us” and I couldn’t be happier! I definitely would recommend, Brooke!

The photos Kallol took were absolutely wonderful. He did an amazing job- especially since the location was so limited in its scenery!! He arrived to the location earlier than scheduled to scope out the area for the best photos. He called ahead and suggested we find a different location. I was beyond exhausted from lack of sleep over the past week. I didn't even have the energy to find another location- yet even plan out my day longer (I barely had the energy to even speak at that point). I had even wanted to cancel for a moment, but this was our wedding day, and we were taking family photos. We called him back and said we would stick with the current location. My husband and I really dread taking photos...... we are total amateurs...... and needed a lot of counseling, suggestions, and literal photos on how to pose every single time. Kallol was so great with us as we joked and laughed the entire time. The photos turned out SO, SO GREAT, and all my sisters were so happy to have photos of their families taken, as well. 😊😊😊 *****On a side note: We had a photographer flake out on us before the wedding- they never even sent me a contract at any point. With less than 2 weeks before the wedding, I had yet to hear from the previous photographer. I contacted several different ways, with no word. I put a project request for a photographer on Thumbtack again. At just 9 days before the wedding, Kallol contacted me and said he was interested in working with me. He gave me a quote and suggested I look at his previous work to see if we were compatible. Kallol made the whole process so easy. He had every aspect sought out and thought about. He sent me emails and texts, and was very personable and professional in every way possible. Kallol was BEYOND great to work with. I recommend him as anyone's photographer. He did such an incredible job with our photos. He is very talented, has a great eye, and has different lenses that he uses for the certain ways he wants to capture a photo. Kallol did not disappoint, and his prices don't, either!! He came early and very prepared. Kallol was a blessing to us. Thank you for everything!!

Working with Ann Marie was a dream! She is more than a photographer, she really helped us think through our wedding day. She was incredibly helpful in helping us figure out our alternate plans when Covid hit. I can't say enough amazing things about her. If you are thinking about booking with them, DO IT! You won't regret it.

Natalie did an amazing job for our wedding! It was a small and intimate setting, and we hadn’t planned to have a photographer until the week before. As luck would have it, we found Natalie, she was available and we were able to have her “save” moments of our special day that, truly, will be treasured forever. Weddings, especially, have so much planning involved but once you are in it, it goes by on a blink of an eye and the day is over before you know. It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to look at her pictures and have time to reflect on the importance of the day and to be reminded of the love that was shared in those quickly passing moments. Natalie was warm, gracious and kind. It felt natural to have her as part of our wedding group and we have received nothing but compliments on the fruits of her labor. We plan to work with her again for family pictures in the future. We highly recommend her should you find yourself seeking the right person to preserve the memories of your special day/event!

He is responsive and punctual, honest and very easy to talk to. However, being the professional photographer, I expect that he would have taken more shots of almost everything and everyone in the wedding, from smallest details to big ones, instead of getting 5-6 pics of same pose just diff. shades. The shots taken by my husband and son captured more of the "moments", and angled to where one could view the faces instead of their backs. I expect more of photos where he could have told the groom to carry the bride playfully, or a shot of the bride seated while the groom stands next to her. Those shots! Sorry. I was not that impressed but my daughter in-law likes them.
