Couldn’t have asked for more! Problem: Single parent; limited budget; 80 feet of old rotting fence; holes under another 80 feet of newer fence; 3 dogs; no experience with tools; nothing but bad experiences with contractors causing complete lack of trust for most service providers. Solution: John Chambers and A&C Innovative Contractors. The name says it all, innovative solutions was exactly what I needed in order to fix the issues that put my animals and home at risk, while staying within a limited budget, and it’s what I got. After getting quotes from many of the big fence companies in town that wanted literally thousands of dollars for labor to replace fence boards on existing steel fence posts (about 4 hrs of work), and contacting dozens of so called fencers on Craigs list to have zero responses, I had given up for this year’s dry season, and was very frustrated. So frustrated that I hesitated to contact another soul about the fence and was patching what I could, with what I could find. I stumbled upon Thumbtack and decided I’d try one last time. I received 4 responses; I communicated with 3 of them and got a response only from John at A&C. We set a time for him to look at the property and he arrived right on time and within an hour of our call. He was working across town and made a special effort to provide an estimate quickly. He walked the area, let me share my concerns, then offered multiple options from replacing the whole fence, to using existing solid pieces, suggesting what work I could do to keep the budget down, and also seeing the issue I had with holes under another part of a newer fence, suggested a solution that he could incorporate into his schedule and still stay within my budget for the old fence replacement. The main part of the work was done within days, the fence is beautiful, and it’s curved which added some complexity. In passing I mentioned that I was very unhappy with the quality of the boards that were on sections of my fence that was only 2 years old. John ended up hand picking over 160 cedar boards to find perfect boards with no holes, splits or twists. I could not be happier, while my trust in service providers in general is still low; my trust in A&C Innovative Contractors is over the top. I will use this company for any and all needs in the future. Their quality, commitment and communications is above and beyond just about anything you will find out there. In total, I met 3 people working for this company and all 3 were above reproach. They dug in, worked crazy hard, in very hot conditions, were very sensitive to my needs and expectations, super friendly and provide really excellent service. I even had tire problems on my truck and was taken advantage of by a local tire dealer on one of the days they were here, when hearing this, John didn't hesitate to say 'hey next time you questions something like that, call me and I'll help you find a better solution'. Trust me folks, give these guys a try, you will not be disappointed. I feel like I finally have that support that I can call on when I need something that I just can't do myself. Linda SE Portland

What a nice guy! We hired Rick to dismantle a large chain link dog kennel that we no longer use. It was a small job for him, but one we weren't able to do ourselves. It's clear that customer service, communication, and doing quality work are important to him. We'll be happy to refer friends and neighbors to Sandrod Fencing. If we ever have a fence installation or repair job in the future, we'll be calling Rick.

I had a great experience working with Daniel. He laid laminate flooring in three rooms and covered a set of my stairs in laminate too. Bidding and Planning: Daniel was thoughtful, responsive, and patient through the planning and decisioning process. He worked hard to understand my needs and budget and made excellent suggestions on products I should consider. Scheduling and Working: Daniel gave me options and worked to fit my job into his work schedule. Overall, he was very timely. Once when Daniel was running late, he texted to tell me. I felt very comfortable with Daniel in my home. He kept careful track of accounting for materials and handled my money with care. Daniel was thorough in his work. He carefully removed baseboard molding, removed carpet, hauled carpet away, purchased sub-flooring, installed sub-flooring, installed laminate flooring, reinstalled baseboards, re-caulked baseboards (they looked perfect), covered my stairs with laminate, and installed a metal nose on my stairs. Finishing the Job: Daniel cleaned up after himself along the way. He also cleaned thoroughly when the job was complete. I was very impressed with Daniel's commitment to making things right. An example of this was my hinged closet-style door. The door was carefully removed before work began. The last task Daniel completed was reinstalling that tough door. Because the flooring underneath the door had changed in both style and height, the door needed to be readjusted. Daniel made the necessary adjustments, but the old door with its aging tracks and hardware were stubborn. It would have been easy for Daniel to shortcut that door reinstallation, but he stayed longer that he expected to make sure the door worked well. That door works better for me now than it ever has. I rate Daniel as both excellent work-quality and an excellent overall value. I will likely have him install new countertops for me soon.

There was a slight hiccup with scheduling the initial visit and estimate - but Rick and the folks at the office recovered from that error quickly. The fence looks good and we really appreciate how flexible the crew was during the install. There was a section of fence that did not meet my expectations... Rick and crew came back out promptly and, after talking through his reasoning for the original method and what my intent was for the finished product, we came up with a solution that worked for all parties. We are pleased with the final result and would recommend working with Turn U Green. Thanks for the positive experience!

I needed to have the chain on my chandlier lengthened and got an immediate response from Emmanuel. Great price to do this as well. We arranged a time that he could over to do this, and in the meantime I discovered that my toilet was leaking around the base and I also need to have a shower curtain rod installed. Again, Emmanuel responded back to me within 10 minutes to let me know he could take care of these additional tasks. He arrived on time, and immediately got to work on lengthening the chain on my chandlier. He diagnosed the cause of the leak in my toilet quickly. We ended up having to remove it from the floor and he was nice enough to run over to Home Depot to get the part and he re-installed and caulked within 30 minutes time. After I had paid him, I was telling him about some other things that needed to be done next time, in particular, I had a door that would not stay shut. When I showed him the door, he took one look and said he could fix it right now. He cut into the area where the door's strike plate is , screwed in the strike plate, and , done. Door shut perfectly. Emmanuel knows what he is doing , is able to diagnose problems quickly, and come up with the solution. He is quick, but does quality work. I feel confident in recommending his services, and will definitely be calling upon him again.

Kevin and his crew just built us a fantastic wooden fence, complete with custom dog windows. They were very professional, polite and friendly. Kevin was on time for both the day of the quote and the day of service, and I got a great price. I'll definitely use them again when I have more yard projects!

The contractor did not have a portfolio of past similar projects nor did he provide references I could contact. We finally came to an agreement as to how he would build my fence. His company contract was rather vague so I wrote out a more detailed one that he and I signed. It listed the specific points about the project that I felt were important, i.e. type of wood to use, heights, design, cleanup, etc. The contractor and crew were very cooperative during the construction. Whenever there were questions about how I wanted things to be done, we referred to my contract. I needed to leave town on the last day of their work. Since the work had gone well up to that point, I paid the contractor off and left him to finish up his work. When I returned a week later I was surprised to see that several of the details noted in my contract had not been completed. It has been three weeks since then and he has not returned to complete the small details nor to do a final review of his project. I can only guess that he felt rushed to complete my project and has been too busy to follow up. I will complete the final detail work myself. I have noticed that some of the fence wood has loosened up due to inadequate nailing. This was obviously done to reduce construction expense on the contractor's end. I have gone back and reinforced the wood with heavier screws. The fence is sturdier now. I would rate this contractor as a "good" builder, just not a "master" builder, due to the lack of detail work and lack of followup on the contract.

Mario did a great job installing and staining our new fence! He was easy to communicate with and quoted a very fair and competitive price for the job. In the busy summer, he was able to install the fence within a week which was great! I couldn't get other contractors to even get me a bid within a week. With Mario, he bid the day after we initially spoke and completed the job within a week. We are very happy with our fence and will call Mario first the next time we need similar work done

The project got a quick start date, Julio showed up on time, went right to work, completed the installation of 5 fence posts quickly and according to the directions. Easy to work with, good communicator and even brought his younger sister along to learn about hard work paying off. I will definitely consider hiring him again if the need arises.

David Yoo remodeled my kitchen and bathroom for me and finished my basement for rentals. I asked for granite counters and new cabinets installed in the kitchen and it turned out amazing! For my bathroom he took out my old fiberglass shower and I had him install a new stand up shower completely tiled along with a new vanity and built-in's. The basement got a full remodel including an egress window, beams and bathroom and kitchen. Everything turned out beautiful and he is very professional and knows what he is doing. I would recommend him to anyone looking to remodel their place or their rental units.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
