As a vocalist in a worship band I wanted to improve my voice so I joined Sofia's lessons a year ago. My voice became definitely more stable after a couple of months and she helped me to discover my real register. Besides practicing scales she recommended me songs from different styles which I'd not thought before that I could ever sing. She gave me useful instructions how to perform. Because of her sensitivity she found the best personal examples for me. It was really a pleasure to take part in her lessons. We had lots of fun.

We created a life-long memory for my husband's surprise 60th birthday party and David and the All Requests Live band were a big part of that! They were so easy to work with. The videos they provided really impressed me and they more than delivered! They talked with the guests to see if they had any special requests and I think they managed to perform almost every one of them from multiple decades and various genres. They were very flexible and at the last minute even hooked up my niece's phone to their system so she could sing a dedication song she'd been working on that we had no idea about. My family is not known for cutting a rug but everyone was on their feet and had the most amazing time. Thank you so much ARL!

If I could give these guys a rating of 10, I would! A top rating of 5 just isn’t enough. What a pleasure to work with this group! Planning an event from 3000 miles away was challenging. Cameron made it easy with excellent communication, prompt responses to questions, and flexibility. I was searching for a band for my Mother’s 70th birthday who would allow my daughter to perform a song or two with them. Hans and the Wanted had her up with them for 4 songs and it made my Mom’s birthday even more special. You won’t meet a nicer group of guys. They arrived promptly and set up with a back up plan in place due to rain. I was more worried about them getting wet than they were. They played a diverse and perfect mix of songs from the 60s, 70s, and beyond. My family raved about their great choices. They played long sets and took a very short break. They are hard working and thoroughly professional. I just can’t say enough. I am grateful they could play for our event. They are truly exceptional. If you have an event and you’re on the fence about who to hire... look no further.

DJ Katie was absolutely amazing! She was smart, funny, creative and understood our wants for the music at our wedding and over-delivered. She truly worked with us to make our Wedding soundscape exactly what we wanted. She was unique, interesting and engaging---not just the typical cheesy DJ you see too many times at weddings. In fact several guests later asked me if it was possible to get a playlist of the songs she played. I cannot recommend DJ Katie highly enough. If you are getting married and need a DJ stop reading this and go hire Katie. It will be the second best decision you make on your wedding day.

Ryan taught me both piano & guitar, and I couldn't have had a better teacher! I have been in bands/choirs all throughout my life, and I have been instructed in music by many people. Ryan is very patient, he loves to incorporate the specific music that you really want to learn, he teaches you the correct form and emphasizes it's importance, and he makes sure that your lessons are well-rounded and productive. I wanted to learn a song for a performance, and he taught it to me during the lesson while also making sure we practiced scales, chords, and other skills I needed to work on. I learned so much from Ryan, and would highly recommend him to anyone.

My Daughter went from never playing an instrument to being proficient on her trumpet in 8 months. Her band teacher is so impressed. Much of her understanding of music comes from her voice and trumpet lessons with Ms. Valardi. She is branching out into piano this summer and has even attempted to write her own solo. A music teacher that understands the excitement of a student and balances that with foundation is a wonderful thing to find. Ms Valardi is just that.

I initially hired Chance in his trio with Jarrod Lawson and Tryrone Hendrix on a whim; I found Chance on line, took a risk, and what a phenomenal find he was! He & his trio have since played at several events at my home. They are fabulous and truly gifted musicians! They add that extra level of positive energy and class to any occassion! Chance, as my contact has always been highly professional, easy to communicate with, on time, and accomodating. Should the occasion arise I would definitely hire Chance again!

I have been taking guitar lessons from Nathan for 8 years. He is an amazing guitarist and an even more amazing teacher. His knowledge of theory is unsurpassed. He can play all styles of music and explain it and teach it to you in an easygoing, fun way! I absolutely love my time with Nathan and look forward to each lesson. His band (Tango Alfa Tango) is awesome. I highly recommend Nathan for anyone and any level!

Sarah did a one on one workshop with my daughter's band, Death By Thumb. She was able to connect with them immediately and help them sort out some issues they had as a band. Then they went right into song writing. Polished off one and started another all in a two hour period. One song called Mirror was performed just a few weeks later at the Analog Theater in late November. The band members have a lot respect for her and admire what she is doing with her own career. The kids want her to come back as soon as possible! Thank you Sarah, and we hope to see you soon!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
