Jacquelyn was amazing and extremely professional for my January 8th wedding. From the moment I received a quote from her she was in contact and so easy to get in touch with for any questions/information. Jacquelyn did my makeup and hair for my wedding. She also worked on my bridesmaids and my mom's hair. Her prices were extremely reasonable for the great services she provides. She came right to our hotel the morning of the wedding which made everything super easy and low stress that morning. I loved the way all our looks turned out. I received so many compliments on my hair and makeup throughout the wedding day. Jacquelyn does such a good job of listening to your vision/ideas and I felt gorgeous on my big day!

I would highly recommend Brittany Morrison to any bride-to-be! Brittany was a pleasure to work with and was an utmost professional. She eased my mind about my makeup for the wedding day during the trial. I expressed my concerns and desires and she listened and executed it beautifully. Brittany took attention to every detail and took the time to make me look perfect. I not only looked beautiful on my wedding day, but I also felt beautiful too! I received countless compliments on my makeup! Knowing I had Brittany doing my makeup, I knew that my photos would turn out fantastic! And they did! Thanks Brit!

Michelle and her colleague did my wedding makeup for myself and 10 of my bridesmaids — it was FLAWLESS, as usual. Michelle has an eye for detail and knows what would look fabulous with your specific face shape. You can give her a picture from Pinterest and she will do it 10x better, or you can tell her to experiment and she will KILL IT. Love Michelle, her sparkling personality, and her stellar work! SLAY!!

Emily did an excellent job on my wedding makeup and my bridal party's makeup as well. I had tried out several other makeup artists, and I found that everyone else overdid it, and I looked too made up. I didn't look like myself. When Emily did her trial run, I was more than pleased with the results. The result was not only natural, her makeup made me look better than myself. The result was me enhanced! She made me look flawless, and my wedding pictures are proof of that! My bridesmaids makeup looked just as flawless and beautiful, too! I highly recommend Emily if you need a professional makeup artist for a special occasion like a wedding, homecoming or a prom! She was prompt, professional, and goes above and beyond!

Katie was INCREDIBLE in every way!! She did the wedding makeup for myself (the bride), my mom, and my new mother in-law, and it looked STUNNING on all of us!! Katie listened and really took to heart what we each wanted. She personalized the makeup to our vision, skin type -- but she also made great recommendations of the colors / styles / brands that would work the best. The makeup lasted ALL day and night, from 8am to midnight! More than that, though, Katie is just such a nice, thoughtful person. When the salon said they couldn't open earlier than 9am to start the bridesmaids' hair, Katie came out extra early to my mom's house to do her makeup, then drove over to the salon with us. And when I was all chatty and excited and nervous in the morning while my family was running around getting ready, Katie was just shooting the breeze with me, making me laugh and keeping me calm. I appreciated that SO much. She really didn't feel like just a makeup artist, it felt like I was hanging out with an old friend catching up. We all valued her professionalism, talent, and just lovely personality. She helped to make the day perfect! ...and I've never felt more beautiful! If I could give her 10 stars out of 5, I would. Book her now!! You won't regret it!!

Cara was 1 of 2 MUA I hired to do wedding makeup for my bridal party on 9/3/16, and all I have to say is "WOW!!" I found her profile on thumbtack (first time I used the site) and I was immediately drawn to her, because of her positive reviews and credentials. Her and I messaged back and forth, and she was very professional, not to mention --extremely punctual in responding back. Two days before my wedding, she texted me just to touch base, which was comforting. I had a bridal party of 8 (including myself) and she drove an hour and 15 minutes to come to us! (Which was very accommodating-- and she didn't charge a travel fee!!) Her prices are extremely reasonable-- especially given the beautiful work she did. Everyone looked absolutely stunning. Cara was easy to work with and I'm so happy I hired her to help enhance the beauty of my already beautiful bridesmaids!! =)

I can't say enough good things about Hope! We did a practice session before the wedding and I knew she would make me look like the beautiful bride I had always dreamed of being. She really listened to what I liked and my makeup was perfect. We had pictures done several hours before the wedding and she even waited to touch up my makeup before the ceremony. I got so many compliments on my eyes. If you're looking for a makeup artist for your wedding, there is no one better than her!

Monica and Ashley are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! They are wonderful humans and FANTASTIC hair/ makeup artists. I literally cannot say enough great things about them. They are so friendly and just make you feel comfortable/ at ease on a day that could be very stressful. The hair and makeup they did was absolutely stunning and all my bridesmaids kept commenting how much they loved the end results and how they wish they could travel to NH to do their weddings (most of them are from New England, but we had a destination wedding in PA.) Absolutely easiest and best decision (besides saying, "Yes!!" to the groom) was hiring Monica and Ashley :)

Although there was a slight miscommunication about the services I needed, LA rolled with the punches and gave me an awesome haircut and updo for my wedding. I would definitely hire her again and would recommend her to others. I would also like to note that the weather was extremely unpredictable and she was still on time for both appointments.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

    • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
    • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
    • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
    • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
    • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
    • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
    • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

    • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
    • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
    • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
    • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
    • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
