Sammy did my bridal make up, as well as my bridal parties! She did a phenomenal job on everyone! I feel we looked fabulous and flawless. The make up lasted the entire day and evening which was exactly what I needed for the million of pictures being taken. She has excellent customer service as she made sure to listen to what each of us wanted and fulfilled our wishes. In addition to doing my wedding make up, she cuts and colors my hair. Once again, she does an amazing job. She makes sure to listen to what I want and delivers each time. I am a busy mom and need a low maintenance style and she gave me that, making getting ready each day a breeze! I highly recommend Sammy for both make up and hair! 2 thumbs up😊

Emily did an excellent job on my wedding makeup and my bridal party's makeup as well. I had tried out several other makeup artists, and I found that everyone else overdid it, and I looked too made up. I didn't look like myself. When Emily did her trial run, I was more than pleased with the results. The result was not only natural, her makeup made me look better than myself. The result was me enhanced! She made me look flawless, and my wedding pictures are proof of that! My bridesmaids makeup looked just as flawless and beautiful, too! I highly recommend Emily if you need a professional makeup artist for a special occasion like a wedding, homecoming or a prom! She was prompt, professional, and goes above and beyond!

I had a pretty specific look in mind for my event, and the final product reflected that very well--Katie was very attentive to detail. She also considered my skin type (combination) before using products on my face. Overall, the application was flawless and long-lasting-- I only had to touch up twice with oil blotting sheets in the entire night! Also, the price is extremely reasonable. She doesn't even charge for false lashes. For $40, and the quality and attentiveness Katie offers, I'd recommend her over the makeup artists in the Ulta/Sephora/MAC stores.

Courtney did an amazing job on my wedding makeup as well as my bridal party. She has such a great sense for creating the look that you want and incorporating all of the small details and requests you have. I for one am never keen on eye shadow, but she did mine so perfectly I wish I had her to help me everyday! During the consultation, I told her my vision and theme and she executed exactly as I imagined. I felt so beautiful on my wedding day and would recommend Courtney's services to anyone who would like to feel pertect for their next special event!

I am a business owner from Texas and I had a commercial shoot in Pittsburgh, I was looking for a professional hair and makeup artist in that area. The commercial that I was shooting will be seen in 44 million homes so choosing a hair and makeup artist was not an easy choice, I talked to several makeup artist, but I felt comfortable with Amanda and Jada, so I hired them. The day of my shoot April 22nd, they came early, well prepared, very professional, knowledgeable and cheerful. The makeup was awesome and my hair looked better than ever, I was extremely happy with their work. They stayed with me all the way through, even at studio while I was shooting my commercial they stayed and fixed my hair and makeup when they were told to by the director. These ladies have an awesome energy and it's contagious, I got through the commercial in a short period of time. My second commercial is a few months away and I will hire Amanda and Jada for sure. I will recommend them to everyone! Outstanding ladies! Outstanding job!

I can't say enough good things about Hope! We did a practice session before the wedding and I knew she would make me look like the beautiful bride I had always dreamed of being. She really listened to what I liked and my makeup was perfect. We had pictures done several hours before the wedding and she even waited to touch up my makeup before the ceremony. I got so many compliments on my eyes. If you're looking for a makeup artist for your wedding, there is no one better than her!

Lindsey Denny is a truly outstanding make-up artist! She did makeup for my five bridesmaids and me for my June 2016 wedding and I couldn't be happier with her work. I was as little lost as to what exactly I wanted for my bridal look, but I knew that I wanted my make-up to look natural and elegant. During my trial, Lindsey helped me create a look that both complemented my non-traditional wedding dress (gold/champagne) and was fresh and glamorous. On the day of my wedding she created cohesive, yet unique looks for each of my ladies and paced us through the morning so that we were ready for pictures with time to spare. It was 90 degrees, humid, and sunny (lot of potential for melty make-up), but I looked flawless throughout my outdoor ceremony and reception. All my guests commented on how great my make-up looked throughout the evening and in all of my pictures! Lindsey is very talented and incredibly professional; she's timely with her communication and very responsive via phone and email. She's flexible and easy to work with - she helped make me and my ladies comfortable on a stressful day! Awesome working with her!

Jana is every bride's dream makeup artist. She is EXTREMELY talented, wonderful to work with and very understanding when it comes to nervous brides trying to find the perfect look. During our trial, she took the time to ask questions about what I wanted and which of my features were most important to me. One of the things I appreciated most was that she asked for feedback and modified my look throughout our trial to allow me to determine which colors worked best with my skin tone and help me decide how natural I wanted my makeup to look. I left my trial feeling confident that my makeup would look beautiful on my wedding day. On the morning of my wedding, Jana showed up on time and had everyone's makeup done according to schedule. I don't know which I appreciated more, her calming presence or her ability to transform me into the most beautiful, picture perfect version of myself I could have hoped for on my wedding day! Hiring Jana as my makeup artist was one of the best decisions I made throughout my wedding planning process and I highly recommend her!

Monica and Ashley are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! They are wonderful humans and FANTASTIC hair/ makeup artists. I literally cannot say enough great things about them. They are so friendly and just make you feel comfortable/ at ease on a day that could be very stressful. The hair and makeup they did was absolutely stunning and all my bridesmaids kept commenting how much they loved the end results and how they wish they could travel to NH to do their weddings (most of them are from New England, but we had a destination wedding in PA.) Absolutely easiest and best decision (besides saying, "Yes!!" to the groom) was hiring Monica and Ashley :)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

  • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
  • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
  • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
  • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
  • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
  • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
  • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

  • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
  • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
  • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
  • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
  • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.
