I have been taking lessons from Monte for 7 years now. He is very flexible and will allow you to change your practice time at the last minute. His prices for lessons at very reasonable as compared to others. He can do lessons for most any type of instrument from guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, violin, keyboards, drums etc. Monte also plays in several bands. He utilizes many of the instruments that he teaches. In fact, I have hired him for several gigs.

Tim is a one man band, who completely blew the crowd away! We loved having him at our Grand Opening. His professionalism was great, and reaching him was no problem at all. When I came into the office the next day, everyone I spoke with said he was great! I would absolutely hire him again as well as recommend him to another person/company.

Rick was the DJ at my art deco-ish, bloody wonderful wedding this past April. We booked a marvelous room (Bob Hope) in the Omni William Penn. My, then, fiance was concerned about finding the perfect DJ (I should say he is an Aussie Irish mix, we live in Ireland, have very eclectic music tastes and planned this from abroad!) for our wedding what with our different backgrounds, nationalities and wedding theme. Rick is a gentleman. He met some of the wedding party for drinks, music was discussed, a cd of obscure Australian Punk Rock exchanged... Rick created the perfect musical night. A full night of Big Band music, Bruce Springsteen, The Weavers, Punk, Traditional Irish, even reggae. He judged the crowd, the various countries represented, ages etc. At one point he managed to get the Irish delegation up on the dance floor doing a very fair imitation of river dance. My husband and I highly recommend him for any event. Thank you Rick! :)

Simply put, the Move Makers are the best wedding band I have ever experienced. Period. If you are getting married in the Pittsburgh area, there is no better alternative for value or quality than the Move Makers. My wife and I had the Move Makers play our 3/6/2016 wedding at the Pittsburgh Opera House. We saw a number of other Pittsburgh bands before we made a final decision, and NONE ever came close to the Move Makers (sorry Bachelor Boys). From our first interactions with the band's manager, Sienna, to the final encore song they agreed to play that night, the band wowed us and far exceeded every expectation we had for them. Let me start with Sienna, the band's manager. Sienna is an absolute pleasure to work with. Months before our wedding, Sienna tirelessly responded to our questions, helped facilitate a smooth contract signing, worked with us for ALL of our special requests, and made sure that on our big day set up, performance, and tear down were a breeze. You will love working with her! The band is a group of unbelievably talented and incredibly versatile musicians. The Move Makers provided a classical guitarist for our ceremony processional/recessional, a smooth swinging jazz quartet for our dinner, and an UNBELIEVABLE 10 PIECE BAND THAT KEPT OUR GUESTS DANCING THE WHOLE NIGHT. The band learned several special songs for us to truly make the night memorable. The band's horn section is INCREDIBLE. The male and female vocalists had range to cover everything from Motown to Top 40. The band put together a perfect set that built over the course of the night, allowing some of our older guests to enjoy a few slow songs before building to an incredible climax hours later. Several of our guests said that this was the best band they had ever heard...wedding or otherwise. I very rarely post such reviews online, but Sienna and the Move Makers have earned this praise. Do yourself a favor and look no further than this band for your next special occasion!

I have hired her to play many times, at events and festivals in MD, and have toured and traveled with her as well. She shows up on time, loves to play music and gives 100% to every gig. She plays with her full band, Ishtar, or sometimes as a smaller ensemble of 3 or 4. She has also stepped in with other musicians and led or followed in collaborative musical groups in her genre, Middle Eastern Music. She is also an excellent workshop teacher. I am hiring her back this year.

    About

I have an eleven-piece band who perform salsa, merengue, Latin jazz, afro and cuban rhythms for dancing and/or educational purposes.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
