Great job by Backyard Innovations. They poured sidewalks and a 20' x 30 'cement patio. Excellent job and easy to work with. I would recommend to anyone.

Earnest and his crew are awesome! I had them take down two massive trees that were hanging over my house and they did a fantastic job, cleaned up perfectly, and the value was great. They did such a great job and are so easy to work with that I hired them to do a full tear out of an old concrete and flagstone patio and walkway after the trees came down. Earnest and his crew worked so hard to make sure we were happy with the work I would hire him again in a second to do a variety of home improvement work!

If it wasn't for Thumbtack, I would have never found Concrete FX...I can't say enough about Brian and his team....for this job, I had a stamped concrete patio put in and front stoop and stories done....I'm amazed how awesome the patio came out...it looks like wood! I would definitely recommend them to anyone and will be contacting them again (they also do Epoxy for kitchen countertops). If you want quality work at a fair price call Brian!

Finished the concrete patio quickly and did some extra things to make everything nice. He sealed the concrete and delivered some top soil to my lawn I needed so I didn't need to rent a truck. His work is superb. As the owner and laborer he takes pride in his work and it shows. He showed up when he said he would and did everything he said he would. I definitely recommend using Jon.

Mike Gunde - a man a word, he called me right away and a couple of hours later he was at my house and took care of all the stuff my movers had left behind. Mike and his team carefully sorts out anything which can be donated from the actual trash and it was amazing when we could see the floor in the kitchen and later on on the Patio. If you ever have any junk which needs to be removed or yard clean up this is the only place to go. His prices are very competitive and Mike and his staff work very hard. It was a pleasure to work with the Junk Magician (or I prefer that he is the one and only Junk Wizard !). Sybille

Jim and his guys are honest, hardworking, and very professional. I’m sure this comes from his many years in the Army. We had Jim remodel a powder room, power wash our concrete patio and sidewalks, and inspect our basement walls due to water entering into the basement. He provided us some insight and recommendations to fix the problem; he even reviewed the contractors estimate at no charge. Jim provides outstanding service. He is the first person we call when we need help with fixing something in our home!

I hired R.K. Concrete & Contracting to install a concrete patio, steps, and a pathway to our deck steps. I was extremely happy with the results and will be calling them back for our future concrete work! Rob and his guys were really pleasant and professional and they were onsite at my house every day until the job was done. Also, Rob designed the layout to include curves in the concrete instead of everything being squared off. This was a great idea and made the results stand out even more. I also had them clear out an area of thick brush in our back yard. Again, very reasonable pricing and excellent work.

Andrew and team built a patio under the deck for us. They were always on time and did an excellent job. I asked them to wheelbarrow the concrete since I was not sure if my driveway can taken the weight of the concrete truck and Andrew was very accommodative of that. Highly recommended.

I hired Nate and his crew to do some landscaping work for us. Their professionalism, quality of work and customer service was exceptional, that we expanded their scope of work to include concrete driveway, exterior French drain and site grading. Great company to retain and I would certainly work with them again. You can’t go wrong!!

Randy rebuilt a stone wall this summer. His workmanship was excellent. Rebuilding a stone wall is a very tedious job. I was impressed by how neatly he kept the dirt he had to dig. He cleaned I put everything after he was done and the wall is perfect. After having him do that job, I have since used him to place a paver stone walkway on the side of my house. He also dug up the side of my house and found a broken terracotta dra I need line which connects to the main freshwater drain in the front of the house. I would use his professional services without question. You will be please with him. He does not rush, he does it RIGHT! Came the day he scheduled to do the work ON TIME......THANKS RANDY!

Matt helped me understand the ins and outs of restoring the beauty to my backyard. What used too be uneven and overgrown space is now the perfect spot for a patio table, lawn chairs, and even my decently sized bbq grill. I can't want to have him rework the space alongside my driveway. Affordable, hard-working, and thoughtful to my many OCD ideas and input I had haha. Highly recommended!

I got a response from Rick Edwards, he was very interested in hearing about our project. He offered to do a custom design and free estimate. He came out, looked at the area, spent some time with us, had some great design ideas, show us some of his work and gave us an estimate and a great financing plan. I've already met my installer, very experienced and professional! My family and I highly recommend Pro Home & Sunroom to anyone in the market!

I got a great estimate from Bill for gutter cleaning and he came out the next day. He also inspected my gutters with no extra cost. Not only did he clean up the debris from the gutters but he also cleaned the leaves off my back patio. He went above and beyond. I would love to have him come back for other projects I need done. Highly recommend him! -Mike S. Avalon PA.

Bill did a great job and really exceeded our expectations. After giving the initial quote he noticed that the plan would need to change and made adjustments so the patio would not interfere with putting the driveway in later. I would definitely recommend Bill and use his services in the future.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

What is a contractor license number?

A contractor license number is proof that your contractor is operating their business legally, that they have the proper documentation required by your state or region, and that they are competent in their area of work (electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.). Licensed contractors should freely advertise their contractor license number. If not, you can request it before considering them for hire. You can also research your contractor using their license number. The database for your state will indicate the field they are licensed to work in; whether they are up to date on insurance, workers’ compensation and bonds; and whether they have any consumer complaints issued against them. If the licensed contractor you are hiring does not have employees, they are not required to carry workers’ compensation. Each state or region will have their own database for licenses, such as the State of Oregon Construction Contractors Board. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
