Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the most common type of heating system?

The most common type of home heating system is a forced-air heating and cooling system. This type of heater involves a furnace, which is commonly powered by natural gas, forcing air through a series of ducts that distribute the hot air through different rooms in a house. Furnaces can run on other types of fuel, including electricity, propane and oil. This type of heating system is quite popular because it doubles as a path for air conditioning in the summer.

What is the most efficient heating system for a house?

Geothermal heating tends to be the most efficient way to heat a house when compared to traditional HVAC systems, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Geothermal heat pumps (also called ground-source heat pumps) transfer energy to and from the ground to supply heat, cool air and hot water.

Note that one of the most important ways to boost efficiency, save electricity and lower your heating bills is to make sure your house is weather-tight and well-insulated.

Why is my air conditioner leaking water?

An air conditioner leaking inside the house is a common problem. It could indicate that the air filter is dirty. Or, one of the following may be the culprit:

  • Clogged condensate drain line
  • Leaky, damaged, cracked or rusted drain pan
  • Dirty or broken coils
  • Frozen evaporator coils
  • Broken condensate pump
  • Not enough refrigerant
  • Disconnected drain line

If your AC is leaking, contact a repair service to find out what the problem is — and how much it will cost to fix it.

How much does it cost to install a heating system?

The cost of a heating system depends largely on the type and size of the heating system. For example:

Is it worth it to install central air?

Depending on where you live, it might be worth it to install central air. Central air makes your house comfortable on hot summer days. And although it’s hard to predict if adding central air will increase your home’s value, prospective homebuyers will certainly notice if it’s missing.

Another advantage of central air is that it can help dehumidify your home. Not only will it make your home more comfortable and enjoyable, but it can also  help prevent mold from growing or spreading.

Contact the best HVAC contractors near you to learn more about the central air installation process and to start receiving free estimates.

Can I install central air myself?

While you may be able to do some preparation work for central air installation, you should hire a licensed contractor to complete the project and handle the air conditioning refrigerants.

Also, unless you have the proper credentials, you risk making common mistakes when installing central air. This may include installing the wrong-size furnace, improperly installing ductwork and exhaust systems, and incorrectly managing drainage.

To ensure your central air is installed correctly, contact the best HVAC pros near you and start getting free estimates today.

Does central air add value to a home?

A central air unit or HVAC system may add value to your home. Or, if you’re in the process of selling your home, it may help you close a sale.

The Remodeling Impact report found that 20% of realtors have suggested that home sellers replace their HVAC before attempting to sell their homes, and 7% said this project did help close a sale.

Talk with an expert to figure out if adding an HVAC system is a good idea for your home. And contact the best HVAC pros near you to get free estimates so you’ll know how much this project will cost you.

Does an HVAC technician need to enter my home?

Because most HVAC systems are located in the home, it’s likely that an HVAC technician would need to enter yours when working on the projects. However, there might be exceptions. Some HVAC systems are located in garages or in areas of the house that are sectioned off. During the consultation, ask your technician if they'll need to enter your home.

When you contact local technicians, ask if they’ll perform a video call in place of a traditional consultation. Be sure to send all materials like photos and documents digitally, and comply with all relevant guidelines.

Do HVAC technicians offer remote or virtual services?

Because HVAC technicians need to be physically present to do their work, they have not conventionally offered remote or virtual services. However, with the importance of social distancing due to COVID-19, the need for remote capabilities is greater than ever. If you come across a profile that states the HVAC technician or AC professional is offering remote services, message the pro to find out what those services include.

Consult with your technician to see if the technician will be able to perform a video call consultation. You can find local technicians near you by searching online.

How long does it take to install a new heating system?

A new heating system generally takes a few days to install. Jobs that require new ductwork will take more time. And switching to a different type of heat fuel — propane, natural gas, oil or electricity — may require longer installation times as well, as they could require routing piping, regulators and other adjustments to your home.

Very quick to respond and to send someone out. Unfortunately when their contractor came out he stated I had 3 dampers - but did not try to locate the 3rd damper that was causing the issue. Contractor left stating that the HVAC was just really not built correctly. Unfortunately I was nervous and had to reach out to another company who came within 45 mins and fixed the problem immediately.

I had 1 company out earlier in the morning and they told me it was just how my HVAC system was built. Skeptical - I thought I would try for a second opinion. I called and I was pushed through to Josh. Josh spoke to me about the issue and then made a call to a sub-contractor who came out within 45 mins and was AMAZING! The found the issue - fixed it on the spot and was very helpful in explaining the issue. great work and would recommend them to anyone looking for HVAC help.

Working in construction I know a fair amount of contractors and I can say EP210 I would certainly recommend. Rey quickly diagnosed and resolved an issue with my water pan overflowing near my air handler Cleared out the line and fixed the system in a short time. His quote for his service was reasonable and his customer service was great. Will definitely use him if any future issues were to arise and recommend for HVAC services.

I honestly had the best experience with this company and their techs. I am a new homeowner and I didn't know what to do or what to ask. I had my original contractor wrongly wire my thermostat and lead me to believe that the work that was required to fix it was extensive and expensive. Al and Bert were able to properly wire my heater and AC unit and had us up and running in almost no time. I would recommend this company to anyone in need of any HVAC work.

I needed to convert my current oil hot radiator heating system to 2 brand new HVAC system force air and central air. The duct work was flawlessly. The owner of the company Benny came performed the service, the work was done in a quick and professional fashion, the price was reasonable, no over charge neither sell the service I did not want. Benny knows his stuff, he was incredible thru out the whole process, answered every question, and went above and beyond to finish the project on time. I've work with numerous contractor and without a doubt I would recommend Subzero cooling & heating to my family and friends for their heating & cooling services. Thanks for doing a great job Benny.

I would 100% recommend Benny and Sub Zero HVAC to anyone looking for these services. He showed up on time and was extremely thorough in my heating system tune-up. He opened everything up, double and triple checked all sensors and even checked for gas leaks and carbon monoxide levels. Too often in this business people take advantage since the typical homeowner doesn't know better. This was not at all the case with Benny. He walked me through everything he was doing and took his time with it to ensure it was all in great working order. I have already planned follow up work for Benny to do in the spring with my air conditioning system. Thanks again, I am glad to have made this connection with a contractor I can trust.

Placed my work order last night at 10 PM and he responded at 10:10 PM, asking for $60 diagnostic rather than the $100-150 I expected. After I called to confirm, he showed up within 45 minutes (for context, this was DURING the 2015 heat wave, when contractors were in high demand). He examined the coil and the vent, noticed a dust buildup because I had no filter (nearly scolded me for not having one!), but suspected I couldn't have had this much trouble JUST from a dust build-up, so he kept looking. Sure enough, the level of refrigerant was low. Even while he was charging it up ($90 for 3 lbs.) my roommate noticed the temperature dropping, and the vent temperature went from 85 to 66. A+ work overall. I was worried about his lack of reviews, but after this job I am happy to give him these marks. He's been doing commercial HVAC units for 5 years and only started this business 4 months ago, doesn't hassle his customers for reviews, and strikes me as the kind of guy who'd inform you that you just need to change your thermostat's batteries and then not bill you. In short, an honest and decent man. We even had a little lighthearted political discussion, and he made sure to maintain politeness at all times.
