I worked with Nico and he was extremely effective and knowledgeable about addressing aggressive behavior in my dog, Buddy. Nico's approach was easy to follow, and was applicable to the circumstances. He provided me with tools to establish good behavior habits with Buddy, and I saw vast improvements within just a couple of sessions. The service price was a very reasonable option for my family. Before working with Nico, I was strongly considering re-homing my dog, however, since completing the training sessions I now feel equipped to perpetuate the good behavior and feel that Buddy is a happier dog as a result!

We are first time puppy parents and our fur baby is a handful to say the least. When searching for a trainer, Deb immediate won we over by asking to talk via the phone. She breaks it down so we can understand his behavior from a dog's mindset. She is very invested in our mental health and our puppy's overall well being. Highly recommend!

We have two French Bulldogs (brothers)...one started to "resource guard" and was becoming very aggressive towards the other, we had actually thought he might have to go live with a family member which we did not want to do. I contacted Canines with Class and we scheduled our sessions asap! Lisa was very helpful, she was able to teach my family techniques on how to control his behavior but also to understand the behavior, which is important, plus she was able to help us with other basic obedience training. They responded well to Lisa, they were very excited to see her each visit!! We are so glad we made that call....we no longer have to consider seperating them. We can't not thank Lisa enough for helping us!!

Within one visit there was a significant positive change in my dog's behavior. I know there is still work to do, however, this small change has made a big difference in our lives. I look forward to learning more how to train my dog.

Heather accomplished more in 3 sessions than previous dog trainers who spent much, much more time, but were less knowledgeable about how to effectively handle my dog's behavioral problems. She went directly to the problem behavior and after each session had produced lasting results. Everyone says my dog is like a whole different dog while maintaining his great enthusiasm for being alive. Positive training and rewards all the way. I would highly recommend her services. She doesn't just talk, she delivers.

Training my dog with DeNovo Canine was a wonderful experience. Kayla makes everything so easy and simple, even for first time owners like us, and now my dog listens to every command. We get compliments everywhere we go about our dogs behavior and could not be more thrilled with our results!

Pilar has been an integral part of our pets' lives and family for well over 10 years. She has been with us through the puppy years, greeted our new rescues, and comforted us when our fur babies crossed the rainbow bridge. Her professionalism and dedication is beyond reproach. When we rescued a neglected Airedale who exhibited serious behavior issues, Pilar came to the rescue. She was masterful with her approach and in virtually no time, had taught him to follow commands, taught US how to handle him, and helped him assimilate into our family of humans and pets. Recommending Pilar is always a pleasure and I do so often. She never disappoints.

Nicole took the time to come to my house to meet with me and my dog prior to signing a contract so that everyone involved felt comfortable and agreed with her method of training. She if very calm with the dogs and trains in a gentle caring manner. She corrects bad behavior and gives praise for good behavior, teaching the dog how to please their humans. I can't wait until my dog comes back from spending two weeks with Nicole and can teach me how to communicate with her so she can show me what she learns. I highly recommend working with Nicole.

Almost seven years ago, my husband and I adopted a precious 3 year old Pomeranian who had lived his life tied to a tree. Little did we know, he would quickly develop some very protective tendencies and people problems. He is good with us, but horrible with other people when we're around. We had tried every kind of training we could think of and were even told we should just euthanize him after spending over $2000 on a 3-week "boot camp". Spring of last year, the manager at my vet's office gave rave reviews of Off Leash K9 Training and decided to give them try! Matt and Joe were fabulous. They worked so hard with Reddy and with me to help him to be a better dog. He's not 100%, but he is so much better and it so much more enjoyable to have him around other people than it was. I highly recommend Matt and Off Leash K9 Training to anyone looking to improve their dog and their relationship with their dog!! You couldn't ask for better!

Ryan is an excellent trainer. During the training sessions Ryan was extremely informative. He is very well educated in dog behavior and how to correct problems. Also Ryan sets rules for you and your pet to follow for a lifetime. My dog is very well behaved with people in and out of the home thanks to Ryan's expertise.

Love love love Athena Jones! She worked with our 9 yr old lab mix Onyx on following directions, especially where the cat is concerned. We couldn’t be happier with the results! She’s so knowledgeable about dog behavior and helped us understand what to expect. She’s patient and explains everything she does to us pet parents. Onyx gets so excited whenever she see’s Athena. You can just tell she’s an animal lover with a firm, yet gentle approach to training.

Literally amazing!! My kitten has been driving me crazy with his inappropriate urination and Curtis helped me understand the causes for this behavior. He offered valuable insight, provided suggestions on how to modify those behaviors, and how to better connect with my furbaby. I really appreciated his knowledge, professionalism, and empathy.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
