- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I'm actually semi-retired and can afford to charge less than most therapists do--$90/hour. There’s also a $30 discount off the first session… that’s $105 for a 1.5 hour “intake” first session. For financial hardship I have a sliding scale ($80, $70) down to as little as $60/hour if necessary. (Honor system on that! If we develop a working relationship, we’ll re-evaluate every other month. At that time, if your situation improves, you’d start paying the normal rate.)
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
A first session should be both informal, so we can both be at ease and I can get to know the person, but also formal, because we want to get things done! I need to evaluate, get basic information and so on, but at the end of the session the client should also have a real experience of initial progress. We don’t have to do one, but almost anyone can use a meditation/relaxation method that fits their disposition, and anyone appreciates attention given to their most immediate practical issue, even if it doesn’t relate to their longer-term therapeutic goals. I always try to do or at least suggest those things.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Everything I’ve learned and been through makes me who I am: a BS degree with lots of Anthropology, a MS in Community Counseling, a PhD in Religious Studies with a focus on psychology of religion, ten years of college teaching experience, eiight years of mostly-substance-abuse counseling experience (usually also involving anxiety, depression, communication issues, etc.), 3 years of private practice involving general issues (anxiety, etc.) and dreamwork, AND 30 years of tracking dreams and occasional powerful contact with therapists and spiritual masters of different stripes. Within that 30 years, 6 were "full-time" spiritual seeking. involving living in communities and pilgrimages abroad. Plus I've done about 7 years of writing, mostly years ago (technical writer), more recently (fiction projects that went nowhere) and most recently (spirituality textbook that I sometimes use with clients). Finally I was even a circus performer (juggler, mostly) for a couple of years right out of college in the late 1970s.
