Let me start by saying that Bonnie was amazing! She was professional, caring and extremely accommodating. My husband and I have 2 small dogs (1 Yorkie & 1 schnauzer). We went on a 10 day vacation to Aruba and just got back about a week ago. We travel a lot so we always use a family friend when we have to leave our pups. It has always made me nervous to leave them w/someone I don't know or at a kennel. I have heard war stories from people that kennel their dogs. That said, we use the same friend every time and we have known for 10+ years. As a matter of fact we have never had a "stranger" care for our dogs ever. This time, the family friend was out of town so I reluctantly started looking at kennels. I read reviews, visited a few facilities and did a ton of research, but I was not able to find one that I felt would really care for our pups. I found Thumbtack during my research so I made an account and posted my pup sitting needs (I have never used the site before). I didn't really think I would use someone from this site but when Bonnie sent a reply to my post I noticed that her message was very detailed. Everyone else had a very canned/generic response, but not Bonnie. She told me a little about herself and clients she has had and stil has over the past few yrs. she even said she has references she could provide to me. She was very detailed and I liked that. I felt that she truly put thought in the message she sent so I asked her if I could come out and meet her. She responded very quickly and said she would , accommodate whatever time and date I wanted to come out to her house. When I first meet Bonnie I noticed that she was a very open and just all-around a comfortable person to be around and talk to. I even brought one of my dogs with me, my 2yr old schnauzer that has some behavior issues at times. Bonnie was happy to show us around her property as well as her house. We talked for about an hour as we walked around the farm she lives on. After that visit I called Bonnie to make arrangements for her to watch my dogs. The day of drop off I had lots of stuff with me; food, toys, blankets, leashes, treats, so on.... Bonnie sat with me as I showed her everything and she made index cards for each dog. She wrote down information on each of them, i.e. what they like and don't like, what time they eat, medication info and so on. She asked questions and took detailed notes one each pup. While I was away she sent pics and texted updates. She truly made me feel like she was a family member or close friend that was simply watching my pups. In all honesty Bonnie cared for our dogs the way I would have and I'm very greatful for that. I would have paid double for the service she provided. I can't thank Bonnie enough and I will use her every time I go away! I have a wedding to attend in FL in October and I have already started making arrangements with Bonnie. I have told every friend, coworkers and family members that they should use Bonnie. Thank you Bonnie! PS. I ask my dogs where Bonnie is and they get so excited! They loved her! -- Best Regards, Lola Mattiello

We use Aunt Penny's Fur Heaven for our pet sitting needs and to us it is a gift from heaven! For years we could not find a place where we felt comfortable leaving our 2 beagles. They would be stressed and upset and not get the one on one attention we feel they deserved. But then we found Aunt Penny and Fur Heaven and all that changed the instant the dogs arrived! It is a relaxing, home environment and most importantly they are the only dogs in it so they receive the utmost care and attention. Penny plays games with them and provides a comforting, stress free environment. When we drop off and pick up our dogs they are completely relaxed and happy. We can finally not feel guilty or stressed when we have to leave them. Plus Aunt Penny keeps in touch with us via pictures, texts, and videos showing what a great time the dogs are having. Penny is VERY professional and we always learn something every visit that can help our dogs at home as well. I have also attended a few of Aunt Penny's classes and they are extremely well done. You learn A LOT about dogs and dog behavior that is extremely helpful! I highly recommend all of Aunt Penny's services.

Erin watched my cat for me during a week long vacation. She came to the house daily and took care of our cat, played with her, fed her/etc, and brought in our mail. She was very thoughtful, friendly, and trustworthy. She clearly loves animals. Our cat was much happier this time when we came home from our trip! Would definitely recommend her.

Darlene was wonderful. Our pets really loved her. I would recommend Darlene to anyone looking for a house/pet sitter. If she can take care of our zoo she can handle anything. Very professional and kept in contact while we were away.

Heidi did a wonderful job taking care of my sweet kitties while I was away. She sent me a message each day and a photo of Frankie, keeping me apprised of what was going on at home. I felt reassured knowing she was caring for them.

I had used Thumbtack to reach out to potential dog walkers because I was having issues with my previous hires. (not through Thumbtack) I had completed the Thumbtack form looking for service last Wednesday evening and by Thursday morning Elizabeth had reached out to me with a very decent quote for dog walking. Needless to say with her professional attitude, dog walking skills and incredible politeness, she was hired immediately. She has been my dog walker for a week now and I have not regretted it one bit! One thing I learned about her company is that she is available for any of your household needs. I can assure you I will be contacting Rent a Housewife for many of my household needs! VERY satisfied! HIGHLY recommended!! Thank you Elizabeth!

I provide dog walking, entertainment, house-sitting and care of the house if odd jobs are needed, such as watering plants. I am a retired veterinarian, so I love to care for pets with health issues and needs of the elderly or anxious pets.

We house-sit for people with small houses and apartments, as well as the larger, more upscale homes we mentioned above. We sit for people with and without pets. We sit for people who are going away for a weekend and also for people traveling for months at a time. We even sit in vacant homes that are listed for sale on the real estate market. As you can see, we do not have a typical client. If you're going away, you could likely benefit from our services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is house sitting?

A house sitter watches your house while you are away for work or vacation, or if you have to be away for an extended period. House sitters can also provide pet-sitting services, staying in your home and caring for your pet while you are away. The house sitter can say overnight in your home while you’re gone, or stop by once a day to ensure everything is in order if your pet doesn’t need overnight supervision. Reptiles and most cats are just fine with daily visits and feeding.

House sitting provides major advantages to the homeowner. A regular presence in your house deters break-ins and theft. Home safety issues such as water leaks get noticed and dealt with right away, so you don’t come home to big problems. A house sitter can bring in your mail daily, care for your houseplants, and provide home safety and peace of mind.

How do I find a reliable house sitter?

House sitting can help keep your home safe and well cared for so you can be worry-free while you’re away for work or play. There are several steps you can take to make sure you hire a trustworthy house sitter and do your part to be a responsible host. One of the best ways to ensure a safe home is to hire a professional house sitter. Here are some key points to look for when hiring a house sitter:

  • Reviews and referrals: When searching for a house sitter, always read reviews. Previous experiences will indicate how the house sitter will care for your home while you’re away.
  • Contract: Sign a clearly written contract outlining services to be provided (e.g., mail in each day by 5 p.m.), the daily rate you are paying, and how long the services will be provided. You can also include any agreed-upon house rules in the written contract.
  • Your part: Leave important phone numbers (vet, emergency contact, etc.) and information on where to find emergency items like the circuit breaker and the fire extinguisher, and have a credit card on file with the veterinarian in case of emergencies if the house sitter is watching your pets.
