Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: My experience. I have been working with animals for a very long time (25 years). I apprenticed for close to 10 years before taking on clients of my own. I take the profession very seriously and do about 100 hours of continuing education each year. Since I have so much experience to pull from I can look at the issue and know the steps needed to solve it. I also offer two approaches: 1. Very few private sessions. I give you the tools and knowledge and you do the bulk of the training. This keeps it very affordable. 2. One on one with the dog. We meet, discuss the goals and I work with the dog one on one. Then at the end I show you (or have videotaped it and send it to you) so that you can work with the dog. Making a difference. Many people come to me when they are just getting a puppy. This lets me help them put the puppy on the right track so they can enjoy a long life together. Some people call me as their last chance. The best time to work with a dog is the very first time you see something wrong. But a lot of people hope that the issues will just work them out. So then I get the call after a dog has bitten. Sometimes one bite, sometimes many. The longer you wait the harder it is but I always give my honest feedback.

FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

First visit we talk about the issues and start with training. I prefer to give my clients as much information as they can handle to keep sessions to a minimum.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

As a volunteer in the shelter when I was 11. I apprenticed for 10 years before taking on clients of my own. I crossed over to scientific based approach to training around 1999.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Make sure the trainer is Certified. The only independent certification agency is the CPDT. You can go to their web site at ccpdt.org to check for yourself. Make sure the trainer uses positive methods. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior AVSABonline.org says "punishment1 (e.g. choke chains, pinch collars, and electronic collars) should not be used as a first-line or early-use treatment for behavior problems." Using these products can cause long term behavior problems.
