Hired Adelphia Moving to move between apartments on August 1st, 2016. The movers arrived within the scheduled time slot and were careful handling all furniture. Took a little longer than expected to move materials out of the old apartment, but overall, satisfied with my experience. Took approximately 3 1/2 hours to move 2BRs worth of furniture/materials from Queen Village to Washington Square West; final cost was $440.

Lanre and the movers arrived early and went right to work. Lanre had no issues dismantling our recliner couch. The movers worked hard and took no breaks in spite of the long distance between my door and the truck. Unpacking the truck was completed very quickly. Lanre's prices are very reasonable. I have absolutely no complaints and would recommend Lanre for your move.

We could not have asked for better movers. The contact person Art took care of all of the details. This was a last minute booking. The day befoe the move our plans fell through so we were greatful to find a company to move us. The two movers were extremely nice and professional. They accommodated our timeline and went out of their way to try to move a piece of furniture that was really hard to move down a narrow staircase. They had the best attitude and worked as a team. It's refreshing to see such great customer service despite the difficulty of that kind of work. Would recommend I like to Move It Move It to everyone, A special shout out to our two movers... Awesome experience!!!! These guys are about their business! They arrived and wasted no time getting to the job. Other companies wanted to charge for "time back to their office" and "distance from house to truck"!! Cruz Moves told me what his rate was and stuck to it. They took excellent care of my items. Not only would I use them again - I will be recommending them to anyone I know who is looking for professional movers. He went above and beyond to make my experience hassle free!

This was the first time I had ever hired movers. The experience I had with this company far exceeded my expectations. Josephine in the office was so pleasant and accommodating. Even offering to call me outside of regular business hours to better suit my schedule. The price for 2 movers and a truck for 3 hours was extremely reasonable. On the day of the move the guys were early, which I appreciated. They worked well as a team and worked quickly and efficiently. As a single woman moving between 3 different properties with 2 men I didn’t know, I have to admit I was hesitant about what to expect. But, I never felt unsafe. They were nice, helpful and extremely professional. Every aspect of my experience with Moyer’s Movers exceeded my expectations. I would recommended them highly for anyone needing moving assistance.

Working with Revell Movers was excellent. They called me to let me know when they were close, and they even had a hiccup where U-Haul didn't have the right size truck so they had to go down a size, but assured me I would not be charged for any extra trips as a result of a smaller truck. Turned out we only needed to do one run. They were extremely nice, quick, and patient in taking extra things I didn't originally have on the list. Much cheaper than competitors, and it was amazing. I highly recommend Revell Moving Co!!!

Had a "yucky" job.... moving my son's belongings out of a low-ceiling basement (I'm 6'1") and knew that 50% of what was down there unseen would have to be trashed. In the midst of making 20+ calls to local movers and dumpster providers, we received a quick response from David / Kingdom Movers with an initial bid. This was my first experience with Thumbtack so I was a bit leery. I was immediately able to speak with David over the phone and explained my initial plan re: movers transporting all of the contents out of the basement with some going into an on-site dumpster. He outlined his plan of action (3 movers with a 16' truck) and then offered a cost saving alternative -- they would load and dump our unwanted stuff, and then move our saved belongings into the storage unit for a very reasonable price. Date and time immediately confirmed! David and his team showed up and I knew within five minutes, this was going to go much faster than I had ever imagined. He quickly outlined the plan with his team, and all I had to do was review each box/item quickly and designate its "destination" (storage vs. dump). Only one hour and twenty minutes to clear a place packed "Hoarder" style up the basement stairs into 2 piles and into the truck. A small glitch with our local dump sites delayed the move a bit, but it was not problematic especially since the team had included one extra person than originally planned. David actually had to arrange the dump unloading for a separate day/time and the way in which his team consolidated everything to fit into an already packed storage unit was so impressive. David and his team were so courteous, friendly, and never complained about any of the inconveniences, i.e., the heat, the basement, the dump delay, etc. The end price was actually a bit less than we had estimated. I know without a doubt when it's time for our next move, I will not have a problem finding a reputable and incredible moving company.

The company and their workers were exceptional. I had a great experience with these guys on customer service and the value they had on getting the job done and right. Moved to a new apartment unfortunately the elevator wasn’t working due to maintenance so these guys Jose and Kevin had to bust their butts on 6 flights of stairs. Felt bad for them and it was pouring outside but it didn’t stopped them getting to work and getting the job done timely. Definitely recommending Ace movers . Job well done! Appreciated it!

I called On-Demand Movers the day before I had to move (not my choice). Lanre had his men there the next day and I had no complaints or problems with them. My original mover, Amish, backed out at the last minute leaving me in a bind. On-Demand was local so I gave them a call. Luckily they could do it, last minute. They moved me to a storage unit & I will definitely call them again when my home is ready, hopefully not at the last minute again. Thanks Lanre and On-Demand.

Movers were an hour and forty five minutes late due to an earlier scheduled move. However, once the movers arrived they were very kind and efficient with moving our contents of our home. Movers completed the move with quoted timeframe. Minus the delay in arriving, the moving company was great and would use again.

By far the best moving experience I’ve had, and I’ve moved A LOT! Mike and the guys were amazing, staying upbeat the whole move, even when I had three floors, a huge sofa, and so much stuff!! No surly hipster movers here! Got the job done in fantastic time. I’m definitely going to use Mike again for other services he does.

The movers were on time and did a great job moving a piano up and down two sets of stairs and around a tight turn. They were very strong and also very smart in dealing with this tough move. I'd definitely use them again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
