I met with Jimmy Soles, the owner, about installing new flooring in my Hartville ranch home. His pricing was right. but more importantly, he was very knowledgable and I was impressed enough to hire him on- the -spot. As the job progressed it unexpectedly required installing replacement under boards, dry wall repair, and custom cuts for both my newly installed Pergo XL and baseboards. No problem with any of it. And he worked on my schedule! (He worked his ass off) He has since installed a new "Disposall" and fixed my fence's gate He is scheduled to return early next year to advise me on a patio enclosure and some electrical issues. I would, and will hire Jimmy for all of my property repair needs. (ask for a senior discount)

I can't say enough great things about their work and professionalism. Working with Frank and Robin was easy from start to finish. There was constant communication back and forth off what needed to be done and we worked through things that came up unexpectedly. I had my first floor townhouse renovated that went from an old outdated dungeon to a more modern clean look and feel. What a difference these guys made. What I liked about this team the most is that they went above and beyond making the job look right making sure that I was going to be happy with the end result. I would definitely recommend them to family and friends and will continue to use their service into the future.

I have hired Dave for several projects. He has hung siding on my garage, laid Allure flooring in my bathroom, living room and a bedroom. He installed a new bathroom sink and vanity. He has painted most of the rooms in my home and has done some landscape work as well. Dave is very professional. Completes projects in a timely manner, and is meticulous about detail and cleanup. I recommend Dave to anyone looking for handyman projects. Will hire him again for sure!!

Barnes Sklare Remodeling & Home Improvements LLC are hands down the best contractors in the area. I immediately felt comfortable with Chuck when he met my mother and I at her home. I explained to him that as a gift to her I am remodeling her kitchen.(this was not a little task) I needed a trustworthy and reliable contractor since I live in AZ and would be stay connected with them through video messages and phone calls. Chuck and his partner, Chris were awesome. They we're very open to continuous communication and understood that a group messages and group phone calls with my mother and I were the best way to keep us aware and involved during the entire reno. We remodeled a kitchen and full bathroom. The kitchen/living/dining was opened into one open concept living. We removed a load bearing wall, and a chimney. 2 walls in total. We replaced subfloors, removed old tile floors, backsplash, tile walls and plenty more. Then we ordered all new cabinets, counters, and floors. We even had Chuck join in a video call at a local home improvement location and verify measurements with our cabinet representative. We worked with Chuck and Chris the entire time letting them know the items we were selecting for install in. Both my mother and I really appreciated their input on products(the good and the bad). We choose maple cabinets, quartz countertops and LVT flooring. We also selected the same finishes for the bathroom the we remodeled at the same time. Barnes Sklare Remodeling & Home Improvements LLC will provide you a quote and work diligently to stick to it. They are trustworthy and kind to each member of your family.(including the dog) I would highly recommend and encourage you to reach out to them for an estimate on your next home improvement reno. You won't be disappointed by their work.

Foreman Jeff is a gem. Original project was tearing up cracked basement floor, installing sump and pouring new floor. My pipe burst under my kitchen sink while he was here demolishing the floor and he fixed that as well. Super guy. Offered his services on future projects and will definitely use him when I am ready for more projects!

If you are currently looking for a flooring professional -- look NO further!!! Geary and his team are absolutely amazing!! We had our living room, dining room, hallway original hardwood floors (and trim boards) refinished and added/matched hardwood flooring to our kitchen as well. The final transformation is beyond what words can describe. From start to finish, Geary and his team were punctual, extremely professional, informative, and CLEAN! I could not have asked for a more perfect experience. Geary goes above and beyond what is expected of the job ~ They even finished ahead of their anticipated schedule. We have already had friends request his information for work on their homes. This is the company to hire. Thank you Geary for making our home a dream come true!!

The best recommendation that can be given any company is if you use them multiple times. I have had Tom do multiple upgrades to my houses over the years. What is unique about Tom is that he not only can do the install but he can do the design also. The kitchen that is on the website is ours. Tom listened to what we wanted in a kitchen and came up with the design for us. He has remodeled our master bath and second bath and installed our tile floors. In our previous house he remodeled our kitchen, installed our wood floor and designed and built our deck. I am very pleased with the work he has done for us over the years and would not hesitate to recommend him for any remodeling job someone might have.

Mr Davis arrived promptly, communicated efficiently and was reasonably priced. He applied Drylok to my basement walls and reattached a bathroom sink securely to the wall.

Disaster evaded. I couldn't be happier. My refurbished deck looks like new and is stronger and safer than new. I had a large deck, approximately 20 years old, that was ill-maintained by the previous owner and was long overdue for a major overhaul. The horizontal surfaces were rotted, pitted, splitting and splintering. I thought I needed to replace the flooring and railing with better material than pressure treated wood. I was shocked when I priced the TREX decking material necessary for what I had in mind. I consulted Ron whom I knew from our mutual interest in a charity. He discussed options and savings opportunities with me. I went with his suggestions which resulted in an extremely reasonable cost for the refurbishment. He reworked, sanded and was able to save about half the pressure treated decking. He replaced the other half with new boards. And he replaced the top surface of the railing with brightly colored TREX that provided a nice highlighting effect once Ron had cleaned and painted the entire deck. It looked like a new deck when he was done. But all that shines is not gold. In doing his due diligence, Ron checked beneath the surface (See example of what he found). The six major posts that support the deck were rotted to the core. It was only a matter of time before the deck, its contents and occupants went tumbling down. Ron provided a deep concrete foundation that extended above ground level for each post and did so at a very reasonable price while giving me the confidence that this deck is now safe and built to last. Due to Ron's diligence and professionalism, my family and I dodged a bullet. He is a highly experienced and proficient workman of exceptional character. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking the contract services he offers.

Allen and his crew from Buckeye 5 did an amazing job on my master bathroom remodel. After our first meeting for a quote, I was doubtful that he was going to be willing to do the work within our budget, because I thought we wouldn't be able to afford them. However I was pleasantly surprised that he came in right where we needed to be to complete the job. If your looking for a honest, reliable, hardworking individual, then hire Buckeye 5 to do your job! There's no surprises with these guys. If there are any changes that need to be made after the initial estimate they make they are communicated before moving forward. I'll be using them for future renovation projects. Thanks guys.!

We recently completed a large remodeling project in our home which included carpet and engineered hardwood. Flooring was the one part we were hiring a professional to handle. Matt and Tracy were so amazing throughout the entire process. Incredibly patient in helping us in the design process. As well as highly professional in working with us to keep things within our budget. Working with them immediately felt like working with friends rather than just another business. Their care and concern for our overall happiness was evident from day one.

My wife and I were shopping various contractor's for a new kitchen floor. My good friend had just had his entire kitchen remodeled by DRAK Remodeling. Now I helped him move into his house so I knew what the kitchen looked like before the remodel. It is beautiful!! I immediately got Randy's (owner of DRAK) number and scheduled him for our kitchen floor. They arrived early and on time and had my new floor installed in a week and my floor was unlevel in many areas because our house is older. My wife who loves her kitchen adores her new floor, we get compliments on it all of the time. A few months later we had DRAK completely remodel both of our upstairs bathrooms. They were small, outdated and completely dysfunctional. Our new master bath looks like something out of a five star hotel, we love it. Our second bathroom turned out just as sweet. Randy listens to you, answers all questions you have about everything and pours his all into each project. If he wouldn't have it in his house he wouldn't put it in yours. I totally respect that. We had DRAK back recently for some minor painting and as usual Great Job! He's our go to contractor for everything we need, no need to shop anyone else.

James is very professional and did an amazing job installing both my hard wood floors and travertine. His charges are very reasonable and he always showed up on time and cleaned up afterwards. He is willing to go the extra mile to help his customers. He works a full time job and yet was willing to give up his weekends to work on any project I needed to get my house ready to sell. The quality of his work is outstanding. I highly recommend hiring James for your flooring project.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
