Over the past 4 years, Sarah Wright has tutored 2 of my children and myself in various areas of math ranging from math SAT prep to advanced graduate level Statistics and several areas in-between! I cannot say enough wonderful things about Sarah's teaching abilities and her level of knowledge in all areas of math. She is truly gifted in tutoring under even the most challenging of circumstances. She is incredible at deciphering a students learning style and knowing how to approach teaching them to achieve the best result. Sarah's dedication, patience and knowledge are truly amazing. The results from sarahs tutoring are excellent and I highly recommend her.

Will was able to reach my high school daughter and relate to her through her outside interests. He was highly encouraging to her and helped build her confidence in her math skills. We have used his tutoring on and off for 3 years. Her grades are always better when she receives consistent tutoring from Will. I highly recommend him especially if your child is struggling with self-confidence in an academic area.

My daughter took the SAT three times on her own and received 1060, 1080, and 1100. She really wanted to get to 1250+ because that score would make it a near certainty that she could get accepted by her top-choice colleges. Dane did a 10-week SAT prep course with my daughter, which resulted in her scoring a 1280 on the SAT. Dane was professional, reliable, and supportive, and my daughter was very comfortable with him because it was clear that he truly wanted her to succeed. Several of my neighbors used tutors from large local tutoring companies that were much more expensive than Dane, but their kid's results --- while positive --- were not nearly as good as my daughter's results were. The experience, overall, was outstanding for both me and my daughter and I will definitely hire Dane again when my younger children need tutoring.

My son is a dual sport athlete and finding available time to get his SAT prep in around a demanding schedule was near impossible till we found Allen. Allen worked around his schedule, between school and practices. He came to our house, was professional, prompt and cared about his success, not only on the SAT's but his school work. Allen offered to have him call should he have issue with his chemistry or Calculus homework. Allen showed him techniques that would assist in increasing his SAT score. He worked with my son about 3 or 4 sessions and he had an increase in his overall score of 210 points. I found Allen on Thumbtack and was a little skeptical and leary at first having someone come to our home, but Allen’s professionalism and results speak for themselves.

My son is in 10th grade and a bright boy. However, with ACT tests coming up, we wanted him to reach his highest potential. Through the Chelsea International Getting Into The Ivys test prep program, my son has excelled so much so that he is up to go to Stanford. After doing 6 weeks of private tuition with Dr. Michelle, her patience, understanding and encouragement, has driven my son’s greatest results. He scored 34 on his first time taking the ACT and he had no prior ACT testing experience. I am so impressed and so thankful for the professional experience of Chelsea International.

Melissa was an awesome tutor. I had taken an SAT prep course but wasn't scoring high on practice tests- esp in math. She really understands the math and is very patient. I feel so much better and my practice scores are really good. I think I 'll do well on the real test.

I cannot even put into words how much [my tutor] helped me. I improved my score by 140 points, so far have been accepted into 10 out of 12 schools. I have received $100,000 scholarships. And I have absolutely no doubt that a massive contribution to my acceptances and scholarships was my SAT score. Thank you so much for the personalised tutoring, and for the help in achieving such an improvement between my first and second scores!

I am currently a college student who is studying English, Spanish and political science. I think that having been a high school student recently, I have a very good idea of what to expect from standardized testing and can prepare students using my own experience to guide me. Additionally, I am a very strong writer and enjoy editing papers, because everyone should be able to vocalize their thoughts and work in a way that is understandable and is going to be well received. By fixing the grammar or format of a piece of writing, you can transform it so that although the content stays the same, the message is clearer and the response is more gratifying.

I am truly enthusiastic about the subjects that I tutor. I studied Math in college and have been tutoring for Math (anywhere from algebra up to Calculus & statistics) and for the SAT/ACT (all sections) for about 6 months. My students have averaged about 4 points of increase on the ACT as a result of an average of 12 hours of tutoring. I also played collegiate baseball and can relate to any students hoping to continue their athletic career in college.

I have over 5 years of education experience and am a relatable, down to Earth instructor. My area of expertise is science and math, but I know a lot about test prep and the college preparation process.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

    • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
    • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
    • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
    • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
