Ryan repaired drywall ceiling in bathroom at our rental property. The property manager was very impressed and pleased with Ryan's professionalism and attention to detail. Drywall work was cleaned and dust-free. Price very fair. We are happy to now have a good repair man for both properties.

I had my roof replaced. Ben and his team were wonderful! He talked me through all of the issues with my existing roof, how he would fix everything, and explained all of the costs in the estimate. His estimate was lower than other contractors, and he was doing more than the others had proposed. They arrived on time, did the work in the proposed time and thoroughly cleaned up everything. Very pleased with the work , and will definitely hire him again!

Anthony, was a pleasure to work with. He has done work for me on several occasions. I had him paint the interior of my home along with drywall work. He even did tile work. He is very detail oriented always goes above and beyond to make it look perfect. The best part is the work gets done quickly and I dont have to worry about a thing. He is very reasonably priced and always makes sure to work with me to get the job done the way I want it. Thank You for being an honest and hard working contractor. I highly recommend him to anyone.

Nothing but good things to say about Balco Landscapes! I had just completed two projects with separate big name contractors and the experiences were both horrible. Had I not been on home on several occasions, the work these other contractors did would have been done wrong and not to spec. So I was a bit uneasy when I realized that due to my work schedule, I would not be home for the entirety of the landscaping project with Balco. But, Balco Landscapes showed up every day, on time, and did the work they quoted. The work itself is stunning! The installed 2 flagstone patios over concrete base, a separate stacked stone retaining wall, and landscaped a garden bed horribly overgrown with weeds and planted agreed upon plants. Also planted a dogwood in the very back of the yard. Balco also pulled the necessary permits from Baltimore City (which in itself is no easy task). They quoted 2 weeks to complete the project and they finished in 1 week and 3 days. Harry and his team were nothing but courteous and professional from the moment they showed up in person to discuss design and requirements, through to the project's completion. The morning after the day in which it looked as though everything had been completed, I spoke directly with Harry to make sure they were done so I could finalize payment. Indeed they were... but Harry was already on his way to my house to shore up a joint line in one of the patios that "he wasn't happy with." I didn't ask him to do it... i didn't even recognize what he was talking about... but he came out on his own to take care of it. That is owning your workmanship. And that is respect for the homeowner. This is how working with contractors should always be!! They are already my decided choice for some additional work I'll have done in a few months. If you have landscaping needs, you'll be in good hands with Balco! A+ across the board.

I had two jobs actually. Water damage and "plumber" damage. Jeff stopped over and put a fair estimate together and was then able to accurately match paint from 12 years ago. His painting skills are top notch and professional, and it included some new drywall being hung. When finished both areas were cleaner than when he arrived. Highly recommend JST Painting.

Jeff did an incredible job with our basement ceiling drywall. His service was outstanding - he communicated with us often: letting us know when he would start the project (which was very shortly after our inquiry and around the holidays), notified us when he would be at the house each day, and when to expect his work to be completed. He went above and beyond - did everything we asked him to with a smile and was able to start a day earlier than he thought! He was even great with our 2-year-old who was in the house during some of the project. So with the combination of Jeff's pleasant presence and getting the job done ON TIME (which is hard to find from contractors during a renovation), along with the excellent smooth quality of the drywall taping and spackling, we are VERY pleased! We would highly recommend Jeff and his team to anyone looking for drywall work.

We hired Jeff to install some kitchen cabinets and build a deck under them, then trim them out. Jeff is punctual, reasonably priced, neat, personable and a real craftsman- every quality you could want in a contractor or Handyman! I am very particular and OCD, he worked with me every step of the way and really helped my vision come to fruition. Not to mention, he was wonderful with my 3 very young children and respectful of my home (taking shoes off etc). We are having Jeff back for a full bathroom remodel and cannot wait to work with him again, would highly recommend.

Angel did an amazing job. He took over a half finished DIY drywall project and did an A+ job! He showed up on time every day and made night and day progress each day. We were so thrilled with his work, we hired him to do a few other jobs around the house before he packed up his tools. We got one quote from Angel and couldn't even get another contractor to give us the time of day. I'm happy we went with Angel, don't hesitate, he will do an amazing job! Here is the scope of the work he did: -demoed the walls and removed all waste -installed drywall and missed the whole room (we requested to leave rafters exposed) -promoted the walls so they were ready for us to paint -installed our GeoWood Bamboo floors from Calibamboo -replaced the bathroom door -replaced accordion door to laundry room and closet with proper doors (single for closet, double doors for laundry room) -fixed very noisy stairs -installed 2 indoor ceiling fans -installed outdoor ceiling fan in our pavilion, he had to run underground electrical to the pavilion -installed new outlets (white) to replace old ugly brown outlets (about 20 outlets in all) -installed trim and quarter round to entire room, even using white silicone to make them all look very uniform. It's worth noting he ran a laser to ensure that the floor was laid straight, not just following the wall (the wall isn't straight, forcing him to custom cut every board in a 45' run)

Tyler did a great, professional job on our bathroom remodel. His attention to detail was excellent. Tyler kept us informed clearly and frequently. Excellent demeanor. We will be using him again to paint two rooms next week. He has been arguably the best contractor we have used for needed work at our home since we moved to Harrisburg four months ago.

Phil of GLCS, came to my home to remodel my bathroom, put up new sheetrock in the bedroom and paint throughout the house. The job was done with expertise and the price was amazing. After having so many bad experiences, I will be happy to call Phil of GLCS for all of my home projects.

We had some power washing done and a piece of pvc replaced that had broken off outside. We had a few other items quoted, and the prices were high compared to quotes from more specialized contractors so we passed on those things. However, Brian was responsive, professional, showed up on time, and did what he said for price he quoted.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.
