Introduction: I have lived and worked in Germany so that I emphasize a lot of common-usage expressions and customs that may not even be present in solely textbook-based instruction. I also use German Internet sites and popular young people's novels, so that my students' experience of the German language will be a more genuine and comprehensive one than that found only in a textbook. I also work with many school students who are already enrolled in a German course to improve their performance in that course. Besides straightening out any grammar or vocabulary questions the student is encountering, wedo homework and prepare for tests together.

Steve is helping my high school daughter get caught up in her German III class. She had fallen behind due to getting stuck on a few assignments. He’s really getting her back on track. In 3 days they had 4 1-hour appointments and she is finishing assignments between lessons as well as with him. He’s teaching some tricks to help with difficult or tedious concepts. It’s clear he enjoys teaching and is good at motivating without pushing too hard. I am very happy we hired Steve!

Stephen has been very patient with my teen son, and his teaching format keeps my son engaged and learning at a good pace. Mr. Griggs is an outstanding teacher. No matter the topic, I cannot say enough about the efficacy of his tutoring. I was attempting to learn the German language through an instructor from a popular online organization. For 15 months I struggled and I STILL could not hold a simple conversation in German. I was disillusioned yet determined to soldier-on. I found Mr. Griggs from conducting an online search and BOY - what a discovery! I have been with him for only several weeks and I am quickly coming up to speed in conversational German. Learning this language has become fun and I look forward to every class. It is the first time since I started to learn the German language that I actually read ahead of the next lesson - where I once dreaded even looking at a German primer. Mr. Griggs has a knack for making every lesson fresh and adds depth as he conveys the idioms and customs of modern Germany - since he used to live there. Several times, he has supplemented the textbook with outside material, such as familiar literature (stories, fairy tales, etc.) that I now read and speak in German, and various exercises Additionally, Mr. Griggs is punctual and prepared for every lesson, which I find VERY impressive. The value of his teaching skills and the benefits his students derive from them far exceed the cost of the lessons.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My tuition fee is $20 per hour if the lessons are twice per week. I also offer three lessons per week at $17 each and four lessons per week at $15 for each. The cost of the Deutsch Aktuell text for German, used but in good condition from Amazon, is about $10.00 including shipping. The Latin text is about the same.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I engage my German clients in practical conversation by bouncing off of dialogs and stories from materials that I send and from an excellent textbook that is full of other resources as well. My focus in Latin is entirely on reading and translating passages about daily life or familiar folktales and mythology.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in German and a Master of Arts degree in Teaching. Besides having lived and worked in Germany, I have taught either German or Latin or both for the last 30 years.
